How do you combat white walls and the sun when you have to shoot an interview or a scene? You need to put out a brighter light source. We used DP Lumi’s to wrap the area to bring up the volume of light and control it. Shane takes you through his lighting setup, explains why he uses this particular setup, and shows you the light meter readings to prove the point!

yeah, it seems so bizarre to set all this up just for a video and then not showing what it looks like (apart from awkward arms-length iphone footage)

Agreed! If you look closely though, you can see the monitor and kinda what the shot will look like… But, of course, seeing the final set up with a subject in frame would be great.

Intent of the video was how to control spill and limit reflection. t Thought it was very informative.

If you did not have access to all these lights and still had to combat a bright backlight source would you recommend using a screen or even ND film on the windows? Also when you do these types of videos would it be possible for you to a shot of what the final scene looks like from the camera? Thanks and keep em coming!!!

It's definitely a great alternative but such a large nd doesn't come cheap, it might just cost you the same as renting those lights for the day

FINALLY... someone who actually knows what they're talking about on KZbin. If I can't use ND film, I use an ND filter to deal with a bright background, an open aperture and a directional gorilla light setup... toe get that "Cinematic" look, with my FD lenses. Also works with white walls.

The funniest part however is showing the window NOT being blown out while using the cellphone! :) The things we do with scrims, nets and nd filters and all we needed this whole time is just a cellphone!

this should have been called "how to combat bright sunny window" because I really didn't hear much of how to keep the light off the walls.

Would have liked to see how the lights were attached to the ceiling and a snippet of the video you shot in the location. Sure was controlled light! You might have had a reason for not blocking the window light but I don’t remember you saying why.

Nice tips! So with white walls, it is about getting some sort of flag to cut it form hitting the wall. And To combat reflections, a black fabric/ flag is good? Have I got it right? :-)

I wonder why not just put ND on the window... wouldnt that be easier and cheaper?
@dcstudio309

The most practical and easiest way were be to ND the windows. This way your subject at least is not squishing his eyes from all the light that is hitting him.

I guess this video was targeted at higher production levels. I thought it was more on how to deal with white walls or how to to modify the lights bouncing off the white walls with flags.
