This is a great tutorial and I share it with customers often when the correct capacitor isn't available and this scenario will work. So, thank you for putting this tutorial together. My only feedback is you're only mentioning the compressor with your L2 and L1 leads, etc. The compressor isn't feeding voltage to the capacitor, the definite purpose contactor is doing so... Hopefully, this minor detail isn't a head-scratcher for your audience. Make it a great day and be safe out there!

The series method also doubles the available voltage, not that it would be needed, but it would last longer putting half the voltage on each cap.

Not only when you run them in series the uF goes down, but you increase the capable voltage. So if you had 2) 10uF 50v caps and you need a 5uF 100v then you would run the 2) 10uF 50v caps in series,

I can see doing this to get someone up in the field that has a need to be up fast. I would also like to see a revisit on company time and paid by the company to put the proper Cap in place. It is quite possible and actually probable that the parallel method would last longer but it is all dependent on wiring especially and other factors. Better to have one piece in place that might fail as apposed to two; one that may be perfectly good and one that may fail shortly after installation and we all know as a near DOA product. Limiting the chain to one takes allot out of the equation. BTW, thumbs up for the idea.

Good informative video. I think capacitor(s) that are separated will outlast a dual run capacitor they won't heat up as much. Something every HVAC guy should keep in his truck is a few AmRad multi tap capacitors. And maybe a 70/10 or if you have the turbo 200X you won't need to worry. Yeah they're more expensive but there's room for it in the budget with the average price to go out and change a capacitor on a heat pump and maybe swap out a contactor for not much extra.

Thanks for your video. Does it matter which side of the cap is connected to the next cap terminal? Kind of polarity that they show like straight line and curved line in schematic.
@WordofAdviceTV5 жыл бұрын
Hey Mike! No, the polarity does not matter with capacitors.
@mikeautostudent55625 жыл бұрын
@@WordofAdviceTV Thanks for response. So why they put the straight and curved sign on schematic or does it matter I swap the yellow[herm] wire with the common terminal wire?
@WordofAdviceTV5 жыл бұрын
@@mikeautostudent5562 That is the symbol for capacitance. (MFD) Sorry, I thought you were talking about a regular run capacitor. With a dual run capacitor it does matter where the wire goes. The herm wire will always be hooked up to the run winding so you can't swap that with the common.
@mikeautostudent55625 жыл бұрын
@@WordofAdviceTV so does it matter polarity in this case bcz common is the other terminal side of capacitor for compressor.

Very good video. Learned a lot that I did not know. At 10:30, you are combing 2 caps to one. Why would you put 2 wires to the common leg. Get rid of one them.
@benwhite5734 Жыл бұрын
Using the formula (C₁ × C₂) / (C₁ + C₂), we can see that as long as the two capacitors are identical, wiring them in series will always halve their value: For any positive value x, (x · x) / (x + x) = x² / 2x = x/2.

I just replaced a fan motor on a 43 year old condensor. The new one had two wires come out of the motor for the capacitor. I just added a cap because it was a different rated one than the original fuel cap. It got me thinking if I wanted to run with a duel cap I would need to use an ohmmeter to find which of the two wires coming out of the motor would be going into motor and which one should be the common. ? The other odd thing on this unit, it had a mallory capacitor which I assume to be a split cap. It was connected only to the herm. But it had two wires connected to the outer terminals from the same lug on the contactor and the middle wire went to the start winding on the compressor. It was a 15-10 mfd cap.

are the 3 terminals of Herm, Fan, Common always placed in clockwise order on top of a capacitor? Also if just the top of a capacitor looks brown (rust, no liquid) with the rest of the can all silver is that considered normal or a sign of damage?

The only way to know for sure if it is bad or not would be to test the capacitor with a meter. And to be honest I have never paid attention in which order, going clockwise, the terminal sections are since they are always labeled.. So I don't have a good answer for that

Sorry but I would take advice from somebody that would force open a pressure cooker. The key is to cool the skin IMMEDIATELY, grab a gallon of milk or anything in fridge and pour it all over. Forget trying to find rubbing alcohol. A lot of skin damage occurs after the initial burn, the skin continues to "cook" in the seconds right after. So a 3rd degree burn can be reduced to a 1st by cooling immediately with whatever is available including jumping in the snow.
@JohannnesBrahms5 жыл бұрын
I agree. Immediate application of cold is the best way to minimize the skin damage from burns.

Doubling up on Capacitors usually means there a problem else where, What is Happening is there is excessive current Draw in startup of a Fan Motor and least likely a AC pump, Make sure capacitor is held Firmly by putting factory clamp around capacitor to frame of unit and it will stay cool for years to come, When removing old capacitors always make sure they are discharged before handling as even a defective one can cause serious harm or death, Always do a Thorough Check of your components before replacing parts other wise you are going to waste time and Money, Stay Cool.

What am I missing? Watched this several times. Looks like series and parallel were wired the same. I once was told to just add a 5 mfd for the fan to the 40/5 mfd dual when the 5 went bad. Not sure how it ran at all for the time it did. Not sure now exactly how I wired it now. Would like to see a demonstration. It ran for a good while until the drain pan under the air handler gave way and flooded. :( I also replaced the board when I saw what appeared to be a burnt area around a diode or whatever it was. Got heat working but not air. I checked a little while back and the 49 mfd is weak. It only shows like 36 mfds.
