There are endless home decorating videos on KZbin and I've seen a lot of them, but Nick takes it to the next level by really explaining just the right amount of theory behind the subject. I think his accessible videos are just as informative as studying a formal class on the subject. Well done and many thanks Nick!

Nick, what I love about your videos is that inwoven with all the fun and silliness, you actually are a wonderful teacher. You never think anything is over our heads, and you take the time to explain design concepts in ways that we non-professionals can understand and implement. To date I haven’t come across another KZbin channel whose content creator truly respects the intellect of their audience as much as you do. I know you’ve taken some guff from those insulted by you having articulated your personal design distaste - especially when they perceive it as an insult to their own aesthetic preferences. I don’t - because I doubt there’s a person alive who adores every style that’s come along - you included. Not liking a design element or style doesn’t necessarily make it bad design - just not in alignment with our personality. Since our design preferences are reflections of our personality, that’s likely why people take your cringing and ribbing so personally. Anyway, I just wanted to express my appreciation by way of rebutting the naysayers. This video is 2 years old, but its succinct instruction is timeless. We’re the better for having you here for us! 💖

Testing a sample is SO important. We painted the walls of our otherwise all-white kitchen (south facing, looks out on our treed yard) apple green. It's crisp and cheerful. My friend's son loved the colour and wanted it for his bedroom. They tested with our leftover paint and in that north facing room with hardwood floors, the colour looked brown and dingy. The difference in the light, and in surrounding materials, had a major effect.

That's really sweet. It's always nice to see nice comments on You Tube. God bless you and your sister. And Nick has some great videos, no? I never thought a merchant seaman would be this much into this stuff, but here we are. haha. Take care!

My sister was a designer. The only thing she shared with me when I asked her how to go about designing my dream house was, "draw circles." It wasn't terribly helpful. My kitchen turned out to be as big as a McMansion. But I had lots of counter space ... And a really big pantry.

I always pick tones, especially lighter ones, most colors in nature are tones, as are historic paint colors, because they only had natural, mostly mineral, pigments to work with. I’m a geologist and pick paint colors colors from my GSA rock chart, they’re guaranteed to be easy to live with and work well with each other.

Thank you. That's a bit of geology of which I wasn't aware. One of my favorite uncles was a geologist who explained the NJ Palisades and the Flooded Basement. I think I remember taking 2 geology classes at NAU. And the only sample I missed in the Mohs scale was a diamond bigger than a 6-point period. I'm such a collector!

I did something a little unexpected about 5 years ago (at least in my circle of friends); I painted my livingroom walls a marsala type color (mine was actually called sweet tea). I like boho and traditional so the darker color was a great backdrop to neutral furniture, earthy woods and rattan type vibes. I kinda flipped what people usually do. Friends were skeptical of such a dark color until they saw it. Then they loved the warmth and richness and how it worked with my style. Sometimes you just gotta go for what you like.

Hi Nick, I was watching your home tour video with Karin Bohn (loved it, by the way) and I was struck by the discussion that you and she had about whether to concentrate an accent color in one spot or to scatter a few other items around the room with that color. In this video, you talked about the rhythm of repeating textures and colors, which seems like a strong counterpoint to Karin’s philosophy. I wonder if you wouldn’t mind touching on these two points of view in some future video. Best, Mark

Great introduction to color theory concepts. It would be good to let people know that in great art/interior design schools color theory is a months long course generally taken at the very beginning of years of study, and includes lots of hands on working with/experiencing how color works to create various moods and expressions. I realize this video was meant to be a short intro, but it would be really useful to also talk about color balance, and give examples of how that affects a room.
