You can tell from Michael’s demeanor and tone that this is all too easy and simple for him. His understanding and deconstruction of the complex human form is incredible, all the while he explains it in such simple terms. The man is a genius.

ive been drawing as a hobby for years (digital anime stuff) but i just did gesture drawing in my college class yesterday and it stumped me so hard. Seeing everyone else's gesture drawings really hit me hard as to how ignorant I am in terms of art basics. I had no idea where to start and how i should be doing gesture drawings. This video helps give me a place to start. Thanks michael and proko!

Gesture drawing is fascinating and hard at least for me I’ve been struggling with it for months now, the (apparent) simplicity of it reveals how well u understand the human body rhythms and structure it gets specially tricky when u try it in perspective thanks for the lesson Mr Hampton and Proko 💕👍

Finally Michael Hampton!!! I couldn't understand how to start thinking about anatomy before his book, totally value
@Lessulie1 Жыл бұрын
this was exactly what I needed! I always felt that my gesture drawings done from life drawing class were not entirely useful when drawing from imagination. It's because I was focused too much on making the gesture look nice and flowy, but not enough on the information that I can derive from doing the gesture! That would be things like the direction the spine is bending, the tilt of the head, how the feet is planted and how weight is distributed, and which main muscles are flexing/stretching. I was always told to view gesture as a more loose and creative process but being able to connect it practically to anatomy has definitely helped me design better looking figures from imagination!

realizing I have to focus on the proportions when drawing dynamic poses with expressive gestures was the game changer for me. It is a hard concept to discover on your own. Thankfully there are channels like this that help so many artists like me

Detailed exactly how the body would be naturally built and how it wouldnt. Hopefully after a month of doing this I will be able to come up with and design gestures without a reference.

I remember when I went to the art institute of the inland empire (now defunct). I was taught by michael hampton. Sure I wasn't great by the end of it, but god damn did the guy teach me a lot about drawing. I didn't draw at all before going to that school, I did 3D modeling for fun. By the time I had dropped out I had a good set of skills under my belt for drawing. I wish I stuck around but it was just so god damned expensive. I didn't really keep up with my training but recently I decided to relearn. I've been using his book to help. Very informative stuff, I recommend it: Figure Drawing Design and Invention

Thanks for the video. Very well explained. .How would you compare the "hampton" torso to the bean torso. Looks for me very similar? would the ellipse for the upper bean torso be wider than hampton's upper toros because he "only" draws the spine (in the example from the video)?
@g3nius2 жыл бұрын
Drawing is not only about construction, its also about feeling and first you have to feel it, like you would be the person. Especially on PC, you have many layers available. No need to start with construction, absolut not. First get in the feeling, in the weight, in the emotions, in the energy, just move your pen around, dont focus on how you lines look like, they DOESNT matter. Stop alwys trying to draw to look good. Its not about good looking. Good looking comes with time, after your motosensoric precision naturaly increase. On top of that layers, use the EASIEST construction lines, dosnt matter how they look like. You can even draw waves from a to b. Construction is for construction and not for looking good. Break free from the curse that what you draw has to look good all the time. Play with the shape of the construction line. Layer to layer learn to feel and create the figure, dont copy. Communicate with the person you draw. Build him in your imaginations and feelings. Make it lively. Painting is the same like music/singing. Dont make "dead-art". Just be playfull, emotional and trust ... have fun. The white paper is not a challenge, its the beeing self, where YOU create your reality. Let the child in you draw, dont let your mind draw. First the child, after comes a bit the mind. Best book for Gesture Drawing is:"The Natural Way to Draw from Kimon Nicolaides". The Gesture Layer is also just 1 layer. Play around it with other layers.
