How To Combine TV Aerial, Satellite, FM & DAB Radio Signals On One Cable

This video shows you how to combine TV aerial, satellite, FM and DAB radio signals onto the same coaxial cable using a diplexers, triplexers and quadplexers.
This is perfect for when you do not have the facility to install separate cables for each of the services or if you want to minimise the amount of cables throughout your property. As all of the services use different frequencies they can easily be combined onto one cable without interfering with one and another.
Please note that this process CANNOT be used with Sky Q or any other satellite TV service that uses a wideband LNB or any satellite service that does not use the satellite IF band. Sky+HD and Freesat will work fine with this equipment.
Once you have combined all of the signals onto a single coaxial cable you will also need to separate them at the TV end. This can be done by using the same type of combiner installed in reverse so that in the signal inputs become the output, or with the installation of a diplexed, triplexed or quadplexed wallplate socket.

A great little video. I am not sure I understood everything but that is because I don't this kind of work. I was watching as I am moving to a new house that has aerial connections built in in several rooms. I just wondered how easy it'd be to add sky Q in a couple of the rooms with an existing aerial socket on the wall? (one is Sky Q and the other is the new generation Arris freesat). Could the sky wiring be hidden by going through the loft rather than drilling holes externally into certain rooms and the wires trailing around the house?? It may be too complex a question for here - so forgive me if it is.

Hi, could I use a diplexer to combine antenna and satellite signals to connect to an slx 6 aerial amplifier? I want to take both signals to other rooms. My current set up has the aerial cable running to the slx and this feeds my living and bedroom tv's. The sat cable runs to the living room only. I know that I'd need to run another cable from my dish into my attic but would using the diplexer work to carry both signals via the slx amplifier?

Hi Mate, On the back of the Triplex wall socket it has an arrow indicating the coax in, but there is also an arrow out, can this be used for another outlet? i only need another tv point, can i do this or will i have to fit a Triplex socket again ? Thanks

HI. I currently have 2 TV antennas combined onto a single cable in my attic. Unfortunately, im just not getting the reception i was hoping for. I'll be moving these OUTDOORS and mounting them to the house, above the roof line on a 10' pole. I have the GE Pro Attic Mount Indoor/Outdoor TV Antennas. I use the CHANNEL PLUS 2532 2-Way Splitter/Combiner CHANNEL PLUS 2532 to combine the signal onto a single RG6 Quad Shield coax cable. I then use the PCT-MA2-4PN 4 Port Cable TV/HDTV/Digital Amplifier which is in the basement. This then splits and goes out to 4 TV's that i have in my home. I also have the Pixel Satellite Radio AFHD-4 AM / FM & HD Radio Antenna in my attic. It is on it's own RG6 cable and also runs down to the basement where it then goes straight to my Denon Stereo receiver. Because a few LOCAL TV channels are just a little bit too weak for signal, i want to move these antennas outdoors and i'm hoping to get your help on equipment recommendations. I also want to move the AM/FM antenna outdoors. My attic is really more like a crawl space and the AFHD-4AM/FM HD Radio antenna is mounted horizontally vs. vertically. So... my goal is to put up a single 10' pole outside. It will rise a little above the roof line of my home. I will mount the AM/FM antenna at the very top since it's a "whip" type antenna and is long. I"ll then mount the 2 GE TV antennas below. I would like to put all 3 antenna's onto a SINGLE RG6 Quad coax cable. That cable will run to the current location in my basement where i then need to split the TV signal from the AM/FM signal. Can you recommend a make/model of a combiner to combine the 2 TV and 1 AM/FM Antenna's onto a single cable? Can you recommend a make/model of a splitter to split off the OTA TV signals from the AM/FM signal? I"m pretty sure i can reuse the PCT-MA2-4PM 4 Port Cable TV Amplifier. All the aerials must be mounted outdoor for best reception. In the attic the reception is between poor to variable or poor to moderate, unless you live very close to a broadcast tower. As for the signal combiner the model that you use is not suitable. You need this type of signal combiner that works perfect: www.dipolnet.com/antenna_triplexer_za-112ms_fm_vhfiii-uhf-uhf-75__C0372.htm You connect two UHF TV antenna (one passive UHF antenna and one active), and a FM+DAB antenna. or a VHF TV Antenna. Make sure the aerials are not close to each other, otherwise it may result in interference. I hope this will help you. Have a nice day!

Hi. I’m currently using a TV aerial in my loft to supply a signal to my TV, HDD recorder and DAB radio, all via a signal booster. This all works fine, but I’m unable to receive some DAB channels on my radio. I was considering purchasing a separate DAB aerial for the loft, but not sure which diplexer I would need to connect the TV aerial and DAB aerial together. There is just one cable that runs from the loft down to the living room wallplate, so I guess I’d also need a new wallplate with two separate sockets on it. Thanks in advance.

Hi Neil, what type of signal booster do you have? Does it have multiple outputs? It is does it might be easiest to swap this out for a two input (TV/Radio) model, then you could have DAB at every position.

I live on a hill in High Wycombe, Bucks. I have a Freeview TV aerial on the roof feeding my TV box with a good strong signal from London. I have a separate radio needing an FM/DAB aerial. which has a single F type aerial connection on the back. What type of FM/DAB aerial should I buy? and can I eliminate need for diaplexer and splitter with a single downfeed from the aerial to back of radio? I presume the existing Freeview aerial cannot be used to provide the FM/DAB signal. Thanks for your help.

Hi Barry, using a Freeview aerial from radio is not ideal. I talk about this further here - www.smartaerials.co.uk/blog/can-you-use-a-tv-aerial-for-fm-dab-radio Couple of options for the radio aerial(s). You could get yourself FAB aerial which is FM+DAB dipoles all in a single aerial, or you could install separate aerials for FM + DAB. Directional aerials like 3-4 element aerials are higher gain but these are not always necessary. Does your radio tuner have separate inputs for FM and DAB?

Hi Ryan, yes that can be done, just remove from the back of the plate and divert to the new TV position. You can join/ extend the cable if nessecary.

Hi mate. I'm in communal tower block and I've been told we can conne t to our cctv from the socket you showed with sat/TV and dab. How does one go about getting the picture on the TV? Using what cable to the TV ect? Cheers

It's usually done with an aerial cable connected into the TV, you then tune the CCTV in like you would your TV channels. Depending on what the set up on the system is, you may need to run a scan on analogue on the TV to get the CCTV. Hope this helps, Tom.

Hi, I've had a large FM aerial on the chimney stack for some time. A builder mate has just fitted a folded di pole to the mast whilst doing some roofing work. The DAB / FM Hifi tuner I have only has one F type connector. I have since learnt that the two cables can be combined. A passive combiner is available that looks very similar to the all metal UHF / SAT combiner featured in your video.. Manufactured by 'Apart'. However I'm having difficulty in obtaining one in the UK. Importing one from Germany costs a fortune. Any ideas on an alternative. Is the other unit you showed passive or active and can you give more info on it or a link. Kind regards, John ( Nottingham )

You could just look for a Triplexer that has TV/ FM/ DAB inputs and just combine the FM/ DAB and output cable. These are easily found online.

Hi yes. You will want a Triplxer or a Quadplexer - Triplexers are usually, sat+aerials+radio whereas a Quadplexer usually has separate inputs for FM and DAB radio. Hope this helps mate.

Hi, what is the name of that triplex wall plate?, I need 4 for my house and I want to make sure I am buying the best possible that minimizes interference and signal strength. Also what is the minimum back box size for these to fit?, that socket looked pretty chunky, one of the aerial points in one room only has a 25mm metal backbox,I have a feeling this will be too tight. thanks.

Hi Callum. I can't actually remember the specific wall-plate in the video but Triax, Antiference both make good quality plates. You're right about them being chunky, 25mm is going to be too tight. 35mm will be better.

Yes that means that it is a screened termination. The die cast is just the method in which the metal is molten and molded into shape.

Random question....i used a splitter as indicated with dc pass through etc. to splot satellite singal, to two tvs that have built in freesat....when one is on the other doesn't pick up signal am I unable to split this way but is there another way to do it?

Hi Anthony, that won' work properly I'm afraid. There are a few reasons behind this, I have a very old blog on our website that details this a little bit. You do want to do, you will need to install a new cable back to the satellite dish and connect it to the LNB direct with no splitters. There are systems out there like Unicable, SCR, dSCR. But this would be a lot more work and you would also need to replace the LNB.

On my house I have a separate aerial/dish for these and I have a triplex socket but cant find a 3 way combiner anywhere...?!?..your advice greatly appreciated thanks. A small amount. There is usually about 1.5dB insertion loss on the wallplate and similar on the combiner.

Smart Aerials Yes it’s for Satellite, the 2 tiny cables have No plugs on the ends .....I wonder where you buy them from. I would still have to buy a satellite receiver but I could buy one of those Free Sat receivers off Amazon I guess. Not sure how many free channels you get but the regular channels on regular TV BBC1 & 2, ITV Etc are mostly trash ..... a few things on them are ok obviously. I do have Roku box and can get Now TV and some a few other things on that. I have No idea what is on that Free Sat but it may well be worth buying a receiver for around £50 .....not signing up for Sky .....its crazy money!

Hi, you can combine the Sat, TV Aerial and FM Radio signals with a Triplexer. You can then install the Triplexed socket that you have linked to, to separate the signals again. You would need to run the cable TV separate, maybe put this on it's own socket?

Really great start - I was quickly hooked - but then you go off too technical, too fast, and with lots of jargon about Sky Q, why it won't work, LNB etc etc...ALL before even dealing with the basics and the most common example. A shame ....as you clearly know your stuff. Lost me from that point. Advice; slow down, and focus on topic - write key focus points on a sheet of paper behind the camera so as not to digress if it helps. Don't head off down technical rabbit holes (unless it is totally core to the solution. You are not communicating to "impress" or sort of show off your knowledge - we've got that). Do that right at the start, making it clear why you should be trusted - which you do- but then, as I say, don't think you have to over impress about some non core ( re video title) technical thing.
