Watch this video to see how to install a TV aerial splitter onto your existing aerial cable for extra TV points around your home or property. This video shows you how to install both indoor and outdoor TV aerial splitters.
The splitters used in this video are a Vision 2 way indoor F splitter and a 2 way Antiference outdoor TV aerial splitter.
Tools you will need:
1x Stanley knife or Utility blade
1x Side cutters
Parts you will need:
1x aerial splitter
Screw On F Connectors
Coaxial cable
Step By Step Guide
1) Cut the existing aerial cable where you intend to install the splitter.
2) Install F connectors on both ends of the cable.
3) Install a third F connector onto a new coaxial cable which will be fed into a new room, repeat this process for as many extra cables you will be installing.
4) Insert the aerial input cable into the input of the splitter.
5) Install all the remaining output cables and screw into position.
6) Tighten all F connectors with a 11mm spanner or pliers to maintain the integrity of the cable screen and to minimize RF leakage.
7) Secure the splitter in position.
The cable can now be fed into extra TV's.
For more information on how to install an F connector onto a RG6 coaxial cable, please watch this video.

@@mssbed My aerial is in the loft , so I bought ASCL 2 Way Indoor TV Aerial Splitter with F Plug in silver from Amazon. Occasionally one of the tv’s doesn’t find channels following a retune, but I think that might be the tv cos it did that before I split the aerial. Another retune solves it. But the picture is fine, no pixelisation. It did take me a couple of goes before I got the knack of fitting the coaxial snuggly into the splitter. Are you just splitting the 1 aerial into 2?

Great video Tom. I’m looking to split a cable but my issue is the coax TV point is in the wrong position for our living room setup. My plan is to split the cable at the coax socket (to keep the socket?) and then run a second cable behind the skirting and under the floor to the new TV point. Just trying to find out the best way to do this so we don’t have to run an external cable from the already fitted socket around the room, and the coax cable there sticks out too much and affects the sofa. I thought about trying to tap into the back of the socket but will likely use the splitter in this video to then feed to the original socket and then to the new socket.

I bought that antiference masthead 2-way splitter and I thought it would be great but it didn't work. However the other 2-way splitter worked the one with no weatherproof housing. I'm not sure why? The splitter is placed before the coaxial enters the house so maybe the point at which it is splitting is too far from th aerial so the masthead splitter didn't work. It may have also been the frequency range? Now I want some sort of waterproof housing for the former aerial splitter.

Hi m8, really informative videos. keep the good work up. I have an indoor aerial up in the roof space of the bungalow. connected to it is a "vision" 20dB 4 way masthead Amplifier V 20-1420.There is a lead running down from the amplifier on the aerial mast to one of the bedrooms with an F connector which in turn is connected to a 2 way "Vision" Splitter. There is no TV aerial leading from the out side of the Splitter. The TV relies on an indoor aerial which is plugged into the back of the TV. I presume if I make up my own lead with an f connector to the Splitter and the other end a coaxial male plug to fit the back of the tv then the picture should be excellent. The picture in the sitting room off the main and only TV socket is excellent. whats the difference between a WEBRO WF100 cable and a WEBRO RG6 cable, they look identical to me. cheers for all your advice, great channel.
@smartaerials
@smartaerials 5 жыл бұрын
HI Timothy. Thank you for your kind words. Please do subscribe to the channel. The masthead amplifier is a two part unit. There is the masthead amplifier itself which is the part in your loft and a power supply for it which is usually plugged in a the TV end. This sends a DC voltage up to power the amplifier via the coaxial cable. If you have both parts then you should be able to connect the splitter fine. WF100 is the cable we use, it's similar to the RG6 but it has all copper conductors whereas the RG6 doesn't. It's better for several reasons but it's not the end of the world if you use a bit of RG6 in domestic situations, it's cheaper after all. There is another video on masthead amplifier installation here, I hope it helps. Tom kzbin.info/www/bejne/gXPbmnhth6p9gbM

Thanks, you can split a signal three ways but the more times you split the signal the more signal you lose, 6dB for a three way split. Hi Lee, could be a few things. You get a bit of natural rain fade which means that the received signal is typically a bit weaker when in rain but this should only really happen in heavy rain. It could be that your dish is offline. It could also be that rainwater is getting into the cable and causing a short on the cable.

Hi there, its been a while since i have made a post, i have noticed my signal strength has dropped to 54dbuv, it doesn't seem to done any harm, infact it anything ive have gained a few more tv channels, so my question is from your professional opinion, does digital tv have certain tolerances? What i mean by that is, ideally the db strength should be between 55db and 70db but if you are just slightly above or below these figures, will it still work without issues, What is the absolute minimum and maximum db strength before things go wrong? To recap i have a loft aerial feeding 5 tvs without an amp or booster, the signal strength originally was 57dbuv at all tv points. Hope this makes sense and sorry for the long post. Thanks
@smartaerials
@smartaerials 5 жыл бұрын
[Yes this is often true, but signal strength is only part of the story. Signal robustness is usually measured is Carrier to Noise (C/N) but a Modulation Error Ratio (MER) is more accurate.] [You can in some instances have 75dB but if you have an interring signal of 50dB for example on the same frequency you will only really have a MER reading of 15dB, anything below 25dB is a fail really. The interfering signals are generally just called "noise" and its important to remember that the TV itself has a noise figure so this can explain why some TV' seem to work better than others, especially if you're dealing with marginal signals. This is something that is usually ignored by most and often why an amplifier works better than when it seem it should (I'm not advising you to fit one). ] [In practice you can drift down to 45dB and still get good reception, especially if you have split the signal as the signal would have begun at a stronger strength and when you split the signal and lost some through the splitter you also split and weakened the noise and thus the MER reading will still be good. So 45dB after a splitter is actually better than getting 45dB directly off the aerial.] [In practice also you can drift above 80dB and everything will still work fine, I just wouldn't recommend it. Rough guide, try and keep things between 50-75dB. I hope this helps. Tom]

Hi tom, I very much like your videos,you seem to know exactly what you are talking about. Several months ago I set up a freeview distribution system around my house using good quality coax "Gt-100" which was made of pure copper, I have an aerial set up in the loft which is a "log periodic" which is what was recommended from a website can't quite remember the name, I bought this about a month ago as I hear it filters out 4G. I live in a strong signal area and the transmitter I use is called "craigkelly" I get all frequencies from this transmitter so I imagine my signal strength must be pretty strong despite the aerial being in the attic? I have 5 tv points in total around the house, but only 2 rooms are in use currently, so connected to the aerial just now is a "vision" 2 way splitter. My question is I plan on connecting all 5 points in the future so all tvs have freeview (virgin media is getting too expensive!), do you think I could get away with using just a 6 way splitter? If so what brand is the best, labgear or Vision? or would you consider a distribution amplifier/booster? bear in mind my aerial is set up in the loft and not outside I know ideally it should be outside but I don't have the correct ladders and even if I did I'm too afraid of falling lol. Also is it true that too strong of a signal can be just as bad as a weak signal? How could you tell the difference whether your signal is too strong or too weak? sorry to sound daft. Hope this makes sense to you thanks :~)
@smartaerials
@smartaerials 5 жыл бұрын
Hi and thanks and I'm glad you like the vids. Yes too much signal can be a problem as it can overload the equipment and TV tuner which can cause pixelation. It's difficult for me to tell you exactly what to do as it depends on how much signal you have coming off the aerial. There is a minimum and maximum signal strength which is around 50-80dB and you want to keep it in between there. You currently have a 2 way splitter which loses around 4dB. A six way splitter will lose around 12dB so you can see here that with not enough signal going into the splitter this could drop you below the minimum. If it was me I would just install the 6 way splitter and then monitor TV reception. If it's fine then no need to worry. If it is pixelating you can then install a one way amplifier before the splitter to overcome the losses associated with the splitter. Do you have a mains point in your loft where the cables distribute from?
@nrg-5003
@nrg-5003 5 жыл бұрын
@@smartaerials Hi there, yes I do have a mains point, all cables meet back at the same point in attic, here is obviously where I plan to put the splitter or amplifier, I will try the splitter first and see how that goes, fitting an Amplifier would not be an issue either as I have a mains socket already in the attic so I could use that to power the amplifier if need be. Would a 6 way "vision" brand splitter or does the brand not matter?, what is the best splitter you recommend for this type of job? Also how could I find out what the total dB is on my system? Any device you can recommend? thanks

Yes Vision is a good brand of splitter, that's what I use. You see some sort of TV spectrum analyser test equipment to measure the dB, not going to get much under a couple of hundred pounds so I wouldn't worry about that if I was you. Most amps are around 10-15dB gain so you will get back any signal losses from the splitter, plus you won't be loosing 4dB fro the two way splitter also. So if you aerial is working at the moment there is nothing to worry about doing it this way.

@@smartaerials Hi sorry for late reply, So as long as the db is somewhere between 80 and 50, and no less than 50db, doing the above will likely be fine with the 6 way splitter? Just one more question and I will be out your hair, on screwfix I found a labgear 6 way distributon amplifier? what is your opinion on these or should I stay clear? thanks

@@smartaerials Hi, sorry to bombard you with more questions, What is your opinion on the Dm log periodic aerial? I remembered the site I got the aerial, its called aerials and tv dot com. For the transmitter I use the DM log seems to be what they recommend for strong signal areas. The frequencies from the transmitter I use starts at 21 and end at 56, I just want to make sure I have the correct aerial for the best results, obviously as you know aerials are meant to be outdoors,this aerial is no exception, but unfortunately there is not much I can do about this, so I have to make do with it in the loft, should I keep this aerial? Is it the correct type for my situation, or should I be looking for a bigger higher gain type aerial like the 48 element types. thanks

This video shows you how to do that using Freeview or other terrestrial TV service, you may need an amplifier though depending on the amount of signal that you have.

I am evaluating the situation/wording. The situation is the splitter , lets say a 2 way splitter . One could say that one coax is going to a room , so one could say that the coax is pointing to that room. And the other coax from the two way splitter is going to another room , so one could say that coax is pointing to that room. The longer I think about the over all situation the less odd it seems. The wording , Extra Tv Points , is what seems odd , because I think , Extra Points for what?? Yes I understand the situation , however is odd.

Ok yes i understand. The wording was to drop a few keywords into the title. So if someone searched "extra TV point installation" or "How to install an extra TV point" it may come up in the results. Obviously if your were to install an extra TV point an extra coaxial cable would be required also. So you're right, if there are already the coaxial cables in place you would not be installing an extra TV point, but installing a splitter and connecting cables. Tom

So you are sticking in words to attract attention. So the showing of the palms of your hands in the picture is a way of attracting attention. I do not approve. Adds to the confusion of the truth. Ok, calm down, this video show how to install a TV aerial splitter if you wanted to install an extra TV point. A bit of keyword stuffing in any case is not the crime of the century. If what you have said is true, then your comment will also be used to programme AI.
