Speaking of which, isn't it illegal to be... well, most of the LGBTQIA+ alphabet, anyhow, in Russia, too? Last I heard L/G at least was illegal. Also IIRC Australia is a bit behind the times; it's not illegal, but neither is discrimination, and they don't have gay marriage there, if I remember correctly. (Erm, apologies to each country if I got all ya'll wrong over there.) Also also: THANK YOU. Literally the only people who've ever had a hard time with me, as a furry AND as trans, are my own parents... but then, they're somehow the most dysfunctional people in my life right now, even though everyone else I know is at least as damaged as they are. Regardless, we mostly just don't talk about it, and with everyone else it's been an absolute non-issue. I know there are those for whom it genuinely IS a big deal -- sadly -- most of whom are in highly religious families in, well, certain parts of the USA, I'd imagine, for the most part, and my heart goes out to those folks... but that kind of fervency is, thankfully, slowly aging away.

@@laserhawk64 In Russia it's not strictly illegal to be gay, but gay rights are restricted and trans rights are basically nonexistent. (quoting wikipedia) "In 2013, 16% of Russians surveyed said that gay people should be isolated from society, 22% said they should be forced to undergo treatment, and 5% said homosexuals should be "liquidated"." The Russian government also happens to be extremely hostile to furries. Also, that bit about Australia is just wrong. Factually untrue. (also quoting wikipedia) "Discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity or expression is prohibited in every state and territory, with concurrent federal protections for sexual orientation, gender identity and intersex status since 1 August 2013". Australia, at a glance, seems to have a pretty thriving furry community.

I think people come out as furries BECAUSE it's associated with being queer/different... so if you have highly conservative family or judgemental "friends" you may be rightfully concerned about their reaction. It is a lable for a reason and at one point was a lifestyle for many before it went mainstream. Every persons situation is different, but the point is the same: Don't take it too serious, and it won't be serious. "I'm a furry, I like cartoon animals and I think it would be cool to be one, better than a boring human." And just handle the "hate" from there. And if you are queer/kinky and the fandom is how you found peace with that, then that's ok too. It's still a part of your identity, but own it and don't let fear put you down. Move out, love, and live life to the fullest! ❤

I feel like this misses the situations where revealing you're a furry is exactly the same as coming out as queer because of the beliefs of the people around you (as my own situation is). I'm not going to be prosecuted for being a furry, but it's still something I HAVE to hide because if I don't then I'll be prosecuted as queer. It doesn't matter that it's just a hobby if the people I'd be telling whole-heartedly believe it's a group exclusively made of gay zoophiles and refuse to listen to anything else. So I just have to hide both, and if I ever "come out" as one I'll be coming out as both too. Thankfully, I have friends who are accepting of both. Coming out as queer to them was easier than revealing I was a furry, since I had multiple friends already out (to friends) as queer and I knew it'd be alright, but didn't know how they'd react to the hobby (I was younger and the fandom had a bit worse reputation than today). It literally took a longer conversation to get across what furry meant to me. I don't think my experiences are by any means universal, and normalizing telling people you're a furry is a great thing to encourage. I bet for most people it's way easier to explain being a furry than being queer, but I don't think it's true to say they're always incomparable when they can sometimes be connected.

Calling it coming out others yourself by making it more serious than it needs to be. If it's a hobby let it be a hobby. Coming out as queer can be dangerous. Being judged for a hobby is one thing, being persecuted for how you were born is another. Don't call it coming out as a furry.

My situation is hugging what I call my Daddy Bardic body pillow extra tight ❤️ tonight! I love *OUR* hobby! I've only recently felt strong enough to experiment with calling myself a "proud furry" and it's like Daddy Bardic read my mind: providing clear, understandable boundaries so I don't start making up a story of "coming out." It is very different. It is healthy and essential to keep the concepts separate. I felt so alone in "my hobby" for so long @spyresoblazx and it didn't have to be this way. In my experience, it only "has to be normalized" if you feel alone and/or are making a decision while also choosing not to understand that decision. ("Normalization" being a savior complex of society coming to rescue you from your own d*mn hobby, or how you think others feel about your hobby). It took a lot of daily practice, but I stopped making that decision to be okay with being alone and being okay with ignorance. I soon discovered I had untreated brain trauma; deficits in smooth pursuit eye movements supporting a Schmahmann's Syndrome diagnosis (it's like I'm Autistic but I also had five years of neurotypical brain development I try to work with, along with vicious depression if left untreated). I disagree, I think your experience is universal because hobbies are universal! Being persecuted for being queer is thankfully not universal anymore thanks to freedom. Keep writing your story of coming out OP, and I hope the experience of attempting to share it with friends online is as rewarding as living it (and ostracizing people who won't let you live it) in your offline life! (Please stay safe). 🫂

@@AdamKili I'm not sure I fully understand. I was agreeing with Bardic in saying being open about the furry hobby should be normalized. As in, the people who think it has to be hidden from everyone just due to being "weird" should know that it's okay to be a furry and okay to be weird, and that they don't have to make a big deal out of it. They should definitely not call it coming out, if it's not dangerous for them. It's just not always risk-free. The part of my experience that I was calling not-universal is *knowing* that I would be persecuted as queer if I was open offline about being a furry. My sister had to flee after being outed as bi. Regardless of what *I* think about it, it's dangerous for me to reveal that I'm a furry. To be honest, I don't think even I should call it "coming out" as a furry. The only reason I would is that because, personally, revealing I'm a furry and coming out as queer would be the same event. At a minimum, I don't have any intention of doing it due to the dangers involved, so I'm hopefully never going to need to call it that just to explain how badly it went. I unfortunately do not have the freedom to set boundaries regarding this. I just have to hide both. I'm just glad I don't have to feel alone as queer or as a furry due to the overwhelming support of my friends and online communities.

When i went to explain it was a hobby and not something to over exaggerat about she just b**ched and was telling my its not normal and im a human (like i didnt already know that) and i was really hurt by this and i just blurted out i was gay (out of nowhere) she didnt/doesn't like me being gay. Mind you this is a years ago but i still get picked on here and there but thankfully its gotten better. They have also been kinder to me about the furry part as well!! Now they just mostly make jokes about me being a furry, nothing hurtful which has been crucial in me being more comfortable as myself and being gay. Now I just dont care who knows or what they think.

OMG the Animaniacs parody was exceptional! But... time for way too much text: TL;DR I don't think this is actually causing any harm. The queer struggle is worse in meaningful ways than the "furry struggle." But both experience discrimination. So let's all join hands (paws) and fight for rights together. And, given the current political climate in the US, that means fighting for queer rights. That's where the "battle" is right now. So let's all do that and help everyone in the process. So, first off, both legally and systemically I agree being queer probably leads to more struggles (I say probably only because I haven't seen data on this; not because I disagree). But I'm not sure if this is really diluting "come out"? If society continues to become more accepting, and we decide that "come out" can only ever mean the same level of struggle as the queer community historically faced, then the term can never be used in any other context going forward. Maybe that's okay, but it feels a little weird to me. I feel like this term doesn't really that strict a definition (albeit its main use is definitely being queer), and language does evolve. Does "coming out" not just mean "revealing something about yourself that would make you anxious or afraid if it were widely known, given that general society tends to discriminate against or misunderstand it despite it causing no harm to anyone"? That seems to fit being a furry to me. Less today than 10 years, the disgust has decreased, but it's still a general sentiment that's not uncommon. Also, this depends massively on what someone hears when you say "I'm a furry". The issue with anything that could be referred to as "coming out" is that we're concerned about the stereotypes and misunderstandings, not the actual definitions of these labels/communities. To many people that probably means "I'm gay and have sex in fursuits" at which point it's at least as "bad" as coming out as queer. To others it means "I'm a zoophile" at which point it might actually be worse. I am 100% confident there are places/families in the US where saying "I'm a furry" would get as bad of a reaction as "I'm queer". And my expectation would be most of the countries in your song would discriminate against furries. Discriminate as hard as against queer folks? No idea. Is furry discrimination as common/systemic/likely as queer discrimination? Probably not; albeit the population sizes (overall rate of queer vs. overall rate of furry) are vastly different, which makes some of these comparisons difficult. What I'm trying to say is that, broadly, it's awesome if the next generation never has to deal with as bad backlash as the previous one. For the sake of argument, if we say the next struggle is being furry (I don't think "being furry" is the next "being queer" in some direct sense; I'm just trying to illustrate a vibe), then it would be a good thing if that struggle were less severe than the one before it. It would be good if the struggles of the next generation were less than those of the previous. On the other hand, it's also a reality that being trans, for example, is materially dangerous in the US in a way that being a furry is not. There are actual anti-trans laws being passed or considered in several states. Like, if you're queer + furry your experience can only be worse than if you're just queer; adding on being furry is not going to decrease anyone's discrimination against you, only maybe increase it. But, that's probably a much smaller difference than comparing being furry + cis/het vs. being furry + queer. In other words, adding in the queer makes much more difference than adding in the furry. And yet, both are valid experiences. One is less severe, but in both cases, there is greater than zero discrimination. And, again, there's huge overlap between furry and queer, which kind of muddles things. Something something intersectionality. And I think it's super valid to say "your coming out was not my coming out," but I don't think that means no one is allowed to use "come out" for something other than queer? And, further, telling someone "you're not allowed to say coming out, your struggles are less severe" is just going to alienate people. Let's not compare; I'd rather approach this as "it won't be that bad if you do, you can do it" than "it's not as bad as X so why are you worried about it". Ideally anyone who used the term would be fully aware of the historical realities, and thus use it while implicitly acknowledging the differences, but that's not really how language or society works. I'd actually be super curious to see some data on how likely cis/het furries are to use the term "coming out" vs. queer furries. Or this might just be an age thing? Kids/teens will think almost anything is the end of the world. Would also be interesting to see data on that. So, some people are legitimately anxious and struggling with the thought of revealing their furriness, and "come out" seems to fit that experience to me. Other people are concerned using "come out" to describe being a furry is diminishing the origins of the term for coming out as queer. I guess my conclusion would be, furries are more likely to be queer, and even if they aren't, are more likely to be allies, so I don't think they're going to turn around and suddenly not fight for queer rights because the "furry struggle" is the only one they care about. I think furries can say "come out as furry" without diminishing the systemic struggles of being queer. And if some people aren't familiar, we can validate their experience then educate them on the broader context. After all, civil rights are all linked; if the current "real" fight is for queer rights, then furries should absolutely join that struggle. Victories in that sphere tend to ripple out and impact numerous communities positively (even if just by making acceptance of the next "thing" slightly easier when the spotlight shifts). And, conversely, if the queer community loses rights, other communities will be next. So for now I think it's fine. If we see evidence of the "furry struggle" erasing the queer struggle in a tangible way, or actually impacting activism, I'll flip my attitude on it. But, for what it's worth, that seems unlikely to me. Can the response just be "yeah it sucks that society makes you feel like you have to 'come out'; I can totally relate. Want to be a queer ally because that's where the political battle is right now"? Though I bet, 9 times out of 10, the furry in question already is.

This! This comment is so very important from my POV. Being a furry may not be illegal (or there are not as many places where it is), point taken. There are places in this world, where, sadly, your life is in jeopardy just because of who you are and the way you love. But even in societies in which this is not the case you can never know how people will react to your coming out as queer. Depending on your situation, you will still experience massive backlash/discrimination for who you are; friends and/or family may turn their backs on you and it would be arrogant presumption to imply that wouldn't be hurtful or scary. From my point of view, same goes for furries. With the reputation the furry fandom has (undeserved, but still) and all the misconception around it, is it so hard to believe people can react negatively to someone being a furry openly? So yes, depending again on one's personal situation/surroundings, I think "coming out" as a furry can have similarly hurtful/life-altering repercussions as coming out as queer. One shouldn't deny someone feeling that way, or being scared about telling people about being a furry just because your personal experience and/or opinion might be different.

Your verbosity is only matched by your accuracy. This is what I would have said, where I a more cool headed, salient individual. Great job :3 I would also like to add that not every gay coming out is the same. For one person it could be brutal violence, betrayal, imprisonment or even death while for another it could be entirely neutral or result in a new relationship forming. If we accept that "coming out" is still "coming out" if the environment is 100% positive then restricting the term to only queers is basically just gatekeeping. People knowing I'm pan has only lead to flirting attempts thanks to me living in a historically Dutch area and in the year 2024, but the mechanics of someone asking if I'm gay and then me telling them I am are still technically the same. I cannot genuinely speak for the experience of an oppressed queer person, and I have past LGBTQ+'s to thank for that. However, it's still technically a coming out, to me at least. A very small one, but it doesn't feel right to gatekeep how tough the closet must be for it to be a coming out.
@fallowstechtime545
@fallowstechtime545 11 ай бұрын
@@francegamer Exactly. The reactions to a coming out can be different, it really depends on your situation. I'm pan, too, and have had different reactions from different people. Luckily none of which have been negative in a way that made me uncomfortable. I've got good friends, a good job with coworkers who're nice and friendly about it, but I still there are times where I'm uncomfortable being open about it. Being in the furry fandom may be just a hobby, but that's not the significant factor to decide, whether someone feels like it is kind of a coming out to tell someone. If you feel like you have to be careful if and whom to tell someone about it, because of what the reactions might be to the point, where you're scared and just wanna avoid it, it doesn't matter if it's a hobby. @KobeKeats said it so well in another comment to this video: There's furry haters, there's people who think being a furry is about sex and porn only, that you're a zoophile and/or pedophile be default if you're a furry and whatever else triggers them and springs to their mind. It may just be a hobby, but one that's widely unknown, has a very bad (undeserved) reputation and yeah, therefore the reactions from others can be hurtful, even dangerous or life threatening. Just because it isn't violence sanctioned by law doesn't make it any less bad for the person on the receiving end. I just don't get why Bardic can't acknowledge that.

He simply isn't aware of any persecution greater than a few kids on roblox, and thanks to confirmation bias doesn't recognize a gas attack or an attempted suppression of the community by a head of state as real threats. The underlying forces causing this blind spot are probably quite personal, but again, we can simply take him at his word. I think the main problem with 'coming out' as a furry is that is the stigma. A lot of people outside the fandom still truly don't understand what it is and sadly lump it in with zoos and other such things. As such I feel that coming out as a furry is used somewhat to help people slowly grow accustomed to the fandom and understand what the fandom truly is about, sort of like padding it a little bit. I do agree that coming out as a furry shouldn't be needed as it is a hobby.

Outside of school is different. Your weird internet commenter about "how they'd hunt furries" means nothing. It's a LOT like other hobbies. From anime, cosplay, fandom vibes, NSFW communities, and more. (They have all had members of their communities face dangers but not the same amount of ones where the law approves the harassment). It's our job to normalise furry. Most I speak too who are down to listen and aren't just memeing learn a lot when speaking to them. (i.e. my Omegle videos show this) So when we mix a serious topic like coming out with "a hobby that's a bit weird to most" is honestly offensive to a lot of queer folks who fought for their rights and went through abuse or have to hide because of real and more common dangers. I can't say people haven't been hurt for being a furry. Bullies exist. But it's not the same. Pick apart that one line if you need. But please analyse your comment in comparison of a hobby to a thing you're born as and can legally be executed for. Hope you're willing to think about that, I don't mean to argue just there's my POV. But it’s not a choice to become any sexuality, it’s just happens depending on who they’re attracted to.

@@BardicRJ I appreciate your willingness to explain you view and not get angry at me for it. A lot more respectful than most. I dont agree thats theres anything wrong with saying they’re “coming out” it’s just means they’re tell someone that is frowned upon or not fully accepted, especially with how much hatred and hurt furries get. It’s really really bad in some places, just like being queer, it’s awful. Sure it’s not QUITE as bad, but holy hell is it still awful.

Hey bardic, Its me, your favourite Rory. I just gotta say I actually wholeheartedly agree with you for posting this, being a furry isnt that much of a life changing thing to be apart of to the point where you need to "Come out" Its a fun little hobby, its not a family changing dynamic that you should request others know or heed to.

eh, bad take. i understand where you're coming from, and i agree, furries don't need to come out, but for different reasons. you know the stigma furries have, sure if you're cis and straight and get along with da boys or the pretty girls, you probably haven't experienced systemic or societal opression like the LGBT+, but people discovering you're a furry can be as much a social death sentence as it used to be being gay or nonbinary, genderfluid, trans, or pansexual etc. still often is for trans ppl. don't feel the need to come out. the friends you know you can keep are the ones who stick around after finding out for themselves, gossip and "finding out" isnt the same as it was for gay people in the 60s, if you're "suspected" no one cares, mostly because no one really knows. if you go out in a fursuit its mostly normal because mascots exist but for those who are bullied and discriminated for it, honestly, your feelings are valid, and it does get better. you'll find support, even if you lose it temporarily, don't worry.

I think the reason this whole phenomenon is so wide is cause theres a lot of stigma behind being a furry, but as ive turned into a more well rounded person i get your point and agree whole heartedly, also time and place is important yknow :3

Grass is a type of plant with narrow leaves growing from the base. Their appearance as a common plant was in the mid-Cretaceous period. There are 12,000 species now.[3] A common kind of grass is used to cover the ground in places such as lawns and parks. Grass is usually the color green. That is because they are wind-pollinated rather than insect-pollinated, so they do not have to attract insects. Green is the best colour for photosynthesis. Grasslands such as savannah and prairie where grasses are dominant cover 40.5% of the land area of the Earth, except Greenland and Antarctica.[4] Grasses are monocotyledon herbaceous plants. They include the "grass" of the family Poaceae, which are called grass by ordinary people. This family is also called the Gramineae, and includes some of the sedges (Cyperaceae) and the rushes (Juncaceae).[5] These three families are not very closely related, though all of them belong to clades in the order Poales. They are similar adaptations to a similar life-style. With about 780 genera and about 12,000 species,[3] the Poaceae is the fifth-largest plant family. Only the Asteraceae, Orchidaceae, Fabaceae and Rubiaceae have more species.[6] The true grasses include cereals, bamboo and the grasses of lawns (turf) and grassland. Uses for graminoids include food (as grain, shoots or rhizomes), drink (beer, whisky), pasture for livestock, thatch, paper, fuel, clothing, insulation, construction, sports turf, basket weaving and many others. Many grasses are short, but some grasses can grow tall, such as bamboo. Plants from the grass family can grow in many places and make grasslands, including areas which are very arid or cold. There are several other plants that look similar to grass and are referred to as such, but are not members of the grass family. These plants include rushes, reeds, papyrus and water chestnut. Seagrass is a monocot in the order Alismatales. Grasses are an important food for many animals, such as deer, buffalo, cattle, mice, grasshoppers, caterpillars and many other grazers. Unlike other plants, grasses grow from the bottom, so when animals eat grass they usually do not destroy the part that grows.[7] This is a part of why the plants are successful. Without grass, soil may wash away into rivers (erosion). Evolution of grass Grasses include some of the most versatile plant life-forms. They became widespread toward the end of the Cretaceous. Fossilized dinosaur dung (coprolites) have been found containing grass phytoliths (silica stones inside grass leaves).[8] Grasses have adapted to conditions in lush rain forests, dry deserts, cold mountains and even intertidal habitats, and are now the most widespread plant type. Grass is a valuable source of food and energy for many animals.[9] Grass and people Lawn grass is often planted on sports fields and in the area around a building. Sometimes chemicals and water is used to help lawns to grow. People have used grasses for a long time. People eat parts of grasses. Corn, wheat, barley, oats, rice and millet are cereals, common grains whose seeds are used for food and to make alcohol such as beer. Sugar comes from sugar cane, which is also a plant in the grass family. People have grown grasses as food for farm animals for about 4,000 years. People use bamboo to build houses, fences, furniture and other things. Grass plants can also be used as fuel, to cover rooves, and to weave baskets. Language In English, the word "grass" appears in several phrases. For example: "The grass is always greener on the other side" means "people are never happy with what they have and want something else". "Don't let the grass grow under your feet" means "Do something". "A snake in the grass" is about a person that will not be honest and will trick others. All flesh is grass: Old Testament book of Isaiah, chapter 40, verses 6-8. A very true observation of the present-day ecology. See the Miocene for the ecological relevance. Grass is a slang term for cannabis (pot, weed, or marijuana). Cannabis looks like a grass, but it is actually a rosid.

i thought at the end the joke would start the music record scratch and then bardic just says "everywhere" I just straight up told my sister just for shits and giggles cause I know she will tell the best jokes and comebacks with it, I know its weird to give your sibling ammunition but I am looking at the comedic aspect more then the actual telling people. Only 2 people know you already know one and the other one is my mom mostly cause if I planned to buy the fur suit at least she will help me keep it hidden from my dad (who is vary vocal about what he finds weird and what he dislikes) so there we go only 2 people in my personal life know for comedic and to keep it hidden from other family members

Definitely agree with this video. I live in texas qnd and have told people im a furry just because it comes up in conversation and they might think its odd, or strange, they might even ask some questions about it and ill have to clarify its a hobby qnd not an identity and they seem more interested and curious if anything, then again I am 25 and my friends and people i talk to are all around my age and are mature adults who show interest and curiousity in things they dont get or understand and they wont stop being a friend because they arnt into the same hobbies im into lol

Actually I agree on multiple accounts, but the main thing that made me agree to this before watching was when my mom was literally begging and pleading for me to not be when she saw me watching Fillian, who is literally like a V Tuber or something. Why do people always need to make people with any semblance of animal a bigger deal than it actually is? Unless it’s a therian , but that’s something else entirely.
