How to Compare Columns in Google Sheets

There are several ways to compare two columns in Google Sheets. Here's my favorite method. I use conditional formatting to highlight items that appear in both columns, and I use the same COUNTIF formula to highlight only those that appear in a single column.

Why B2?

Great question! B2 is the changable placeholder in this function. Note that unlike $A$2:$A$9, B2 doesn't have any $ preceding the characters. That means the function first runs in B2, then it runs in B3, then in B4, etc. B2 is just the top cell in the series. I hope this helps!
