If you use the browse button to populate the folders fields and it doesn't accept the folder, enter the full folder location manually. It will look something like this: "C:\Users\allmi\Desktop\music bu a1." (Of course yours won't look exaclty like this because of your unique file and folder names.) To find the path to your folder, select the folder then right click and go to "properties". Next to "Location:" it will show you the path that you copy and paste into the winmerge folder field. What you copy from "properties" isn't the full path. You'll have to add a backslash and the name of the folder itself. be sure you type it exactly as it exists with proper spaces, underscores etc. and watch your cases. Hope that made sense. After that little snafu, winmerge worked like a dream for me. Good luck. :)

Problem with this is that it relies on identical folder structure to determine whether a file is the same or not or whether or not it exists in both. e.g. A folder stripped of all its subfolders (i.e. all files in a single folder) compared with a folder which contains sub-folders it still shows identical files as being left-only / right-only. Despite the file existing in both places it shows each as being unique.

Kinda weird both of the last release already have issues installing on windows 10. version 3.20 shows errors while installing about /software/key Version 3.18 doesnt respond all the time, does not respond properly with use of wacom tablet.

Before, i just used cmd and excel to found missing files after copying my folder to another folder: in cmd source folder i wrote dir /b /s |clip, then i paste to excel (ex: column A1 - A100) and in cmd destination folder i wrote dir /b /s |clip, then i paste to excel again (ex: column A101 - A199) i use "&" formula to join files name because they've splitted when i pasted to excel and the last, in that excel, i wrote formula =COUNTIF($A$1:$A$199;A1) => to check some duplicates and in my conclusion, i notes file that have no duplicate means it was the missing files. but your tips lots better and make it easier. Huge thanks :)

This is not ideal for comparing what mkvs you might have between two folders. I have two 8TB drives and want to know what movies are on one drive but not the other. Is there a way of just comparing name and filetype without it scanning the internal structure of the file?

Actually a pretty easy solution. In Winmerge you can go into the options (Edit->Options) then go to Compare->Folder on the left. At the top there is a dropdown for compare method, which by default is set to full contents, which is very slow for large files like your case. You can speed it up by choosing the size option. This would only compare files based on their reported size, so you would get a full breakdown of the differences in the folder structure, and would still know if two files are different even if they have the same name.

Hmm. i think i prefer visual compare. Its says it compared folders, but its actually comparing all files in those folders. I tried Meld but that is just a piece of crap. tried 2 version hardly works, wont install properly

comparing two folders is by design so rudimentary, linux has a simple command natively. i dont believe you need to install a software for that... there must be some shell command.

Would be nice if it would work with Android, too. If I just want to compare folder where I have a device name like for example d: or e:, I'd rather go for cygwin diff where I'm in a Unix environment where I can do what ever I want to do. However, cygwin does not see mtp devices and Windows does not assigne drive names to them. And it seems that this hits WinMerge, too. If you select a folder on your Android phone (in my case Samsung) WinMerge complains that the place cannot be found so comparing does not work. Sorry, to say, a system which does not natively support validation of copied data is just pure crap. Why I'm actually using Windows, well, I guess I forgot ...
