I've done this before to come up with melodies or chord progressions. It's a good way to come up with something new. If it doesn't quite work often changing a couple of notes can make it sound better.

Yes exactly - I find it can often inspire other notes, especially if one or two don't work. Its gotten be out of a writer's block more than a few times!

Sounds like an idea worth trying! I remember giving guitar lessons (20+ years ago), and it was fun sometimes just to get the students to strum words as a chord progression (e.g. CABBAGE).

I bet the student's loved playing progressions like that! It can be a cool way to come up with unexpected ideas but it can also generate some not-so-good ideas as well!

@@composingacademy8270 You are welcome since when use correctly scaler 2 doesn't make the music for you but it give very good suggestions for chord progressions and you can lock the scale to the keys so you can never make a mistake while playing and for beginner like me i can even play complex chords by simply hitting one white key.

Using the ryhthm of a phrase can also be a good way to come up with ideas when you're stuck. There's some evidence to suggest that Webern did that occasionally.

Very nice Idea, but as a good melody consists of Rhythm AND Pitch, we also need a method for Rhythm... Any ideas on that?

Really interesting idea but are the F and G not unfairly weighted compared to the other notes, using this method? They only have three letters while the others have four. Is there a way to equalise the distribution across the full scale? Thanks
