For the non-US market, it would be worth pointing out in the installation manual, that an imperial sized Allen key is required - 3.5mm is nearly right but you can't torque it to the right amount and risk damage and it all getting stuck. Fortunately I had my Dad's old set

Great video. would like to know about break in period? What to expect in the first 20hrs.
@psssealАй бұрын
Typically, the PSS Shaft Seal will have a one hour break-in period. During this time, the stainless steel rotor will polish the mating face of the carbon stator. You may experience a very fine mist, sometimes associated with black dust coming from the carbon stator. This will usually stop after the one hour break-in period.

My pss started leaking after 800 hrs. Can i compress it another 1/4 inch while the boat is still in the water
@davidspencer79912 жыл бұрын
Does water enter the seal via the cutlass bearing and exit via the pipe shown on the video .... and does the other free end of the pipe have to be fixed above water line ? Or does water exit the free end ?

When the boat is out of the water over winter can I back off the compression to take pressure off the bellows
@PYIinc5 ай бұрын
When the boat is out of the water for winter storage, it is indeed possible to back off the compression to relieve pressure on the bellows. Before launching the boat again in the spring, be sure to use new set screws when securing the stainless steel rotor.

@@PYIinc thank you very much that's a great help I will indeed put new set screws.

Does the Bellows get "tired" over time. I have just replaced my engine and didn't have a replacement bellow so I just used the standard method of 20 mm from relaxed bellows but the bellows somehow seems a bit more compressed. I'll replace the bellows when I haul out next time but for now I don't want to do that. So I am just wondering if its ok to use the 20 mm compression (1" shaft) on a 5 yr old bellows ?
@Dan-y9p8g11 ай бұрын
When you feel the setscrews push up against the shaft , how much tighter after that should you make them? What would happen if they are too loose or two tight?
@PYIinc11 ай бұрын
You will want to torque the set screws to approximately 6-foot pounds of torque for shafts 3/4" to 1-3/8" and 8-foot pounds of torque for shafts 1-1/2" to 3-3/4". Not tightening the set screws enough could cause the stainless steel rotor to slide forward.

Thats not a very precise method of measuring a bent tape measure, surely a vernier depth gauge should be used, you are giving people the incorrect way to measure it, very poor for an instructional video.

Would it be ok to use Vaseline or something on orings before sliding the coupling up shaft?
@PYIinc3 жыл бұрын
No, Vaseline or any grease should not be used to lubricate any part of the PSS Shaft Seal. Use dish soap and water on the propeller shaft to help slide the PSS onto the shaft.

Mine is leaking after 5 years, what do I have to do?
@PYIinc2 жыл бұрын
If it's leaking at rest, you will want to clean the two mating surfaces with 600 grit wet/dry sandpaper to clean out any debris causing the water leak. If your PSS leaks while underway, you will want to add more compression. About a 1/4" should do.

How many hours (or years in case of low utilization) are PSS shaft seals expected to last before thinking of replacing them?
@PYIinc3 жыл бұрын
We recommend replacing the bellows every 6 years with the PSS Maintenance Kit. This kit replaces the bellows, hose clamps, o-rings, and set screws.

We have used PSS at 90 mm shaft but it's really hard to compress the PSS with hand. We have just compress at 20mm instead 25mm Can you suggest us how Can we reach 25mm ( advised gap) easily
@PYIinc3 жыл бұрын
The 20mm of compression that you currently might be OK, so long as you don't have a lot of forward and aft movement of the engine. To assist in compressing the PSS to the full 25mm you can take a zinc anode and clamp it onto the propeller shaft forward of the stainless steel rotor of the PSS. Using that as leverage take a screwdriver to compress the PSS. Just be sure to protect the stainless steel rotor from damage with a block of wood or something similar.
@jellysmith43502 жыл бұрын
I had to reverse two wood clamps, and set them against either side of the stainless rotor, and then against the gearbox coupling...then it was a simple case of extending them. Lucky I had them on board as voat needed to be back in the water that day...

Do you put locktite on just top two set screws or all 4. And which Locktite
@PYIinc5 жыл бұрын
The Loctite goes on all four set screws. You can use Loctite Threadlocker Blue 242 or equivalent.
