Hey, I really appreciate your work and consistency. Can the next video be "how to mix double stacked vocals?" I am referring to the technique where people are recording two separate takes and stack them on top of each other to make the song sound fuller.
@FredDeMassiveAlambic2 жыл бұрын
you have to spend time aligning perfectly the two takes (most often the 2nd one on the main), even if this implicates croping, cutting, editing audio. The only reason to separate the takes in time would be artistic choice. Most of the time, you want the 2nd take to be more compressed (I personally often use opto comp emulation pushed to -5/7dB), less present (slight 2-5kHz cut), and plays of course at a lower level. Last tricks would be to use a slapback delay for fullness, reverb to fit the song (do you want fullness ? depth ? space ?), compressed high-shelf air boost for crispness.. Many tools, tricks and solutions but aligning is 90% of the job

These videos are gold. I find it best to turn my head away from the screen and just listen when testing sound. It lets me know if I really hear a difference and if I don't then I don't use said technique. Good ish tho

This is superb, really easy to follow as a step by step. Got a full day of mixing tomorrow so I'm going to rewatch this as I'm mixing the low end!

Great toutorials. I think that for some electronic music genres like tech house where the sub bass might bend up an octave suddenly, compression or some form of dynamic control on your bass sound is definitely required. In your example the midi was playing notes relatively close to each other in pitch so the compression probably wasn't necessary.

With synth bass. I frequently use a lot of modulation of filter, fm amount (if there), adding modulation through external filtering, bit crushing, phase/flange/chorus, all sorts of stuff. So yeah, I frequently have to compress synth basses. The only exception being sine bass which I would often use for weight, with a layered bass that is hi passed at 90hz or so. Even then with sine bass there are a few filters I'd send it through to add saturation/harmonics which would also have the effect of creating compression on that bass.

Hi, thanks for the tutorial. I have a question. How do you explain pumping in audio theoretically ?
@sageaudio Жыл бұрын
It's the attenuation of the full frequency range whenever the kick hits. Since the kick is often more powerful, it'll trigger a compressor more often. If that compressor is affecting the full mix, attenuation to the full mix whenever the kick hits will create a "pumping" sound. SageAudio.com

I don't think the compression on the bass synth was needed. A mild distortion thingy would have been better

Question: with that divide Freq by 1000 thing. How do you pick the frequency that's suitable for your track? Wouldn't you have to individually compress each note with different attack and release settings? Maybe I'm being dumb but I don't understand that one.
@sageaudio2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching! I picked the lowest frequency that would be run through the compressor. So say a mix has frequencies as low as 30Hz, then I'd divide 1000/30 to get 33.3ms as the quickest time I could set without distorting 30Hz. In this example, frequencies above 30Hz wouldn't get distorted. But if we're using a compressor like the 1176, with an attack time as short as 0.02ms, this distortion could affect the full frequency spectrum. SageAudio.com
@phantomhim95232 жыл бұрын
@@sageaudio Ah, I see. I thought that might be it but then I thought that was kind of unusable for any modern electronic stuff being that we're always using fast attack times. Super interesting none the less, I didn't know it worked like that. Thanks for the explanation bru.

One of the best types of compression for basses is simply adjusting the velocity of notes that pop out too loudly no cap
@HollerAtcherBoi2 жыл бұрын
True, but that will vary depending on your monitoring system. So you may be compensating for poor monitoring
