Why don't you de-ess lightly before the 76? Are u aiming to keep more of the og character of the vocal when it hits the compressor?

Great question! In this case, the esses weren't too out of control, so I didn't really feel it needed it before. If a vocal recording has hot esses off the bat, I might de-ess earlier, but if it's more tame I won't really need to de-ess much until closer to the end. That's my preference, at least! :)

Haha, I can see how the attack/release directions are a little counter-intuitive! This is actually how the 1176 analog hardware was always built, so Waves is just modelling after that ;)
