Hey guys, I'm just following through your User testing videos and just wondering if you get your testers to sign an NDA of any kind or what measures do you take to protect a new product? thanks heaps

Hi Anna, great question! This differs from case to case… But generally, yes we will get a non disclosure agreement signed by the tester, while also giving them their gift or little reward for giving us their time. That way it doesn’t feel too cold or transactional. We are also lucky to be working with clients that own their database and have a good reach to their loyal customers, so our clients to manage the tester recruitment. In terms of protecting a new product’s IP, you can keep it simple as part of the NDA clause, or you can go further to the extent of getting a more detailed IP protection agreement in place. Having said that, we find that you shouldn’t be too paranoid about someone else stealing or copying the idea, because the fact is that anyone can copy an idea, but it’s very unlikely that they will (or want to) execute the idea!

Hi! I'm just learning product design, quick question on presenting prototypes or design to your user for testing. How would you ask them to do certain tasks or see where they mostly click if its just a prototype/design. I would assume you can't click anywhere on a design. Would it have to be in development mode with a software engineer?

Great question Priscilla. This really depends on the goal of our user research. Because your prototype should have been built based on the most important Questions that you’re trying to uncover… Or the most important User Journeys that you’re trying to improve/optimise. The prototype should not be too broad that the user tester is unclear about what they’re meant to do. As user testing facilitators, we should prompt them with scenarios that we’d like them to do so we can observe them. For example, you’ll ask questions like, “As a user, can you take me through how you might be able to check your order status using this app?”. Then be quiet and watch them interact with your prototype. So this means your prototype should be designed/build in a way that it can support the actions needed as an answer to your scenario/questions. Hope this helps!
