How To Connect A VCR To A TV-Tutorial

In this video, I show you how to connect a VCR to a TV. It is actually a simple process, and I show you two different ways to connect a VCR. All that you need is a set of AV cables or a coaxial cable, depending on the type of connection that you want to make. With that being said, it is a rather simple process and will only take a few minutes if you have the right cables to work with!

Hey there! I got a new LD non-smart TV that seems to hate both my VCRs. Tried to connect them through composite, those wires were tested on my DVD just before testing them on both VCRs and the TV wouldn't get any signal from any of my VCRs even through both my VCRs and this new TV have composite connections. Because the composite connection works just fine on my DVD player and both VCRs had the same answer, I figured out this TV might not hate these VCRs. I bought an SCART-HDMI converter which solved the problem and my VCR is finally playable on this new TV. I had smart TVs before since 2017 but I never had this problem with my VCR. For those who want to criticise me for keeping them, I have 50 or more old VHS tapes that I grew up with and for NO reason I would throw them away!

You’re probably gonna need an AV to HDMI adapter to make it work out.

Thank you so much for your quick and thorough video. Turns out I had to use your second method after going to Home Depot to purchase some AV cables. 🤭. Your simple rationale for “why” this is done will help me to remember next time. Turns out the technician from Best Buy fixed the problem we were having but didn’t set up the hook up to the VCR the way it was set-up when he arrived. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Oh well, through KZbin, and your specific video (I went through a few before finally coming across your video here), I was about ready to throw in the towel. When I explained my dilemma to Geek Squad over the phone, the technician department did not have anyone available to help me so the “scheduler” actually wanted me to schedule a technician to come out to my home. Their next available appointment was over a week away. Your 4 minute video helped solve my problem simple and quick. And probably saved me some additional “no warranty” charges that were most likely heading my direction for technicians to come out to my home. So, your video not only saved me time and money, your video also saved Geek Squad time and money that would have been wasted coming out to my home for such a simple fix!!! Excellent job and thank you….

(Just for Me) For DVD, just match the colors on the TV and back of the box. For VCR, keep the cables as they were in the box, but use the "AV" sockets.

Hey, thanks for the video! My new Fire TV does have an RCA component slot in the back of the TV, I plugged the VCR in (VCR out to TV component plugs) as you showed in the video, but nothing happens when I play a video (I made sure the conections are correct, and I am switching my TV to component selection when trying to watch a video on my VCR). I thought maybe I need an analog to digital converter? Thank for your time and consideration.

The vcr will only get the wall cable if it’s to cable or satellite. If it’s to an antenna connect it to a digital converter box and connect that to the antenna input.

I am still baffled though... I have an ancient Panasonic VCR with coaxial RF In and coaxial RF Out and two sets of AV composites. AV Out white/yellow and AV In white/yellow. At the moment, I can only playback recorded and prerecorded media in my collection of video cassettes on my flat screen via the AV Out composite of the VCR. However, I really want to record some programmes off satellite. My guess is, that I can connect it the conventional way, because my flat screen has the conventional coaxial input, however the one end of the cable coming directly from the satellite dish or the satellite box will have to change from a F-Type connection on the dish/box to a coaxial connection type that the VCR can accommodate. I am still battling with this ! Lol

I had something really weird happen. So I have a old 1977 Sony that I was hooking up a 1985 zenith VCR to. I ran the coax cable from the VCR directly to the TV. Put in a VHS to test everything out and although I received the picture and sound, the video quality was very noisy. It wasn't an issue with "tracking" and I tried adjusting the channel signal a little bit to try to make it better. But nothing seems to fix the picture quality. So I decided to try something different. I used one of those old gaming "switch boxes". I plugged the coax cable coming out of the VCR directly to the switch box and then connected the switch box directly to the VHF screws in the back of the TV. All of a sudden I received a perfectly crystal clear signal now...🤔🤔🤔🤔 I'm not sure why I had to go that route in order to get a crystal clear signal. Maybe my TV just has a bad coax input but I don't know.

How about doing a HDMI Conection from VCR TO TV AND RCA WIIRES TO THE BACK OF THE STEREO FROM THE VCR. Tried that hookup and heard a loud strange noise, possibly because I hooked the white and red wires to the input instead of output on the stereo.

Unfortunately the tri-colored cable thing did not work for me and my coax cable from the wall is too far from from the TV to connect. But I bought the VCR DVD combo off Craigslist so that might be the problem. Also when I eject the VCR it makes a horrible grinding noise?

I am currently attempting to connect my old VCR to a Sharp Aquos tv and it doesn't work. I am using the AV connection from the back of the VCR to the AV jack on the back of the TV. Then I am trying to put it to channel 3-4 without success. I tried to use another input to components or even to 'VCR' and all I have is the sound without an image. Any help? Someone told me to plug it into the cable box (?????). It shouldn't be that difficult to use a VCR to a smart TV. God I miss the 90s...
