Thanks, I used the coaxial cables because I still use a VCR to record shows off TV or clear off my DVR. The picture quality isn`t as good as it used to be, But its still nice to be able to go back and watch something since KZbin has a habit of deleting everything... Thanks again ;)

Also check the back of your VCR when you install the cables for a button that slides over to channel 3 or 4 ( My older Sony VCR has that sliding button) make sure it's on the right channel in the back before you set it in the front.

Well, this is a long shot, and I'm not sure if I'll even receive an answer, but here goes. Yes. I'm here in 2019, still using a VCR, lol . So I've been using my VCR for lie.....EVER. And not even 5 years back, when I bought a Funai flat screen, I was still able to connect my VCR with a Coaxial Cable, set to channel 4. Not long after that, family got Direct TV, cable box was brought in, and was added to the connections. Direct TV connected to VCR via "IN", VCR connected to Funai via "OUT" and so on. Everything worked fine. Then, until recent, like maybe a few months ago (spent 2 months away from home caring for a relative), Direct TV was removed, along with the cable box that was connected to my VCR. Now I'm not sure if someone fucked up while uninstalling, no one in my family seems to to have "noticed" what the bloody Cable Guy did since everything seemed in place before we got Direct TV.....but NOW every time I put in a VHS, my VCR channel will light up as if it's about to play, but then go black and show a "no signal" logo. I'm at a huge loss at what to do. I've tried switching out the cables, tried setting in different channel, CLEANED everything around my tv set...nothing. I admit, I own more VHS tapes than I do DVDs because....it's the fucking classics that get left behind man. So I would appreciate any knowledge, suggestions, tips, etc?

If your vcr has the yellow,red,white sockets that's the easiest option, with probably slightly higher video/audio quality. No tuning would be needed, you'd just set the tv to 'av in' or similar. I suppose it's possible the cable was accidentally plugged into the vcr antenna input instead of output?, otherwise maybe try re-tuning the tv to find the signal(just like tuning in a tv station, but will need to be set for analog not digital - TVs often have both options when tuning).

on a lot of new televisions the composite and the component jack on the back of the set are shared. If that is the case sometimes you have to change a setting in the menu. If you have the owners manual, check in there for hookup using composite cables it will tell you if it needs to be changed.. also you need to make sure that the video of the VCR is working if it is a VCR/DVD combo it can spit the video out into two different outputs. it should be listed as (VCR out).

If your TV has the hybrid yellow/green video input, your VCR will not display on the screen. I have tested this with a few HDTVs made around 2016, got a black screen that said ''No Signal.'' Yes I made sure it was on Composite/AV and not Component/RGB, it simply doesn't display at all. Just a heads up is all, now if you bought a Smart TV that only has HDMI ports, then you're screwed.

red and white cables are intended for audio. however the cables are the same and can be switched around so that you can use one for video. but your best bet is suimply to get a yellow red and white set of cables. (Composite cable) but i have tutorials on cable types as well.

My vcr is probably a little older. I only have the audio in and out (red and white) , no video (yellow) slot in the back of the vcr. It does have the ant. in and out. I do not have the tv connected to cable. I am using an indoor antenna. Can you help?

Are you sure it doesn't have yellow + red, or yellow + white?, some older VCRs are mono, so they would only have 1 plug for audio. If it definitely doesn't you'd have to plug an antenna/rf cable between the vcr ant. out to ant. in on your tv - then tune your tv in to find the signal from the vcr(just like tuning in a broadcast tv channel). Your TV would need to support analog tuning though, some TVs probably only support digital tuning now. A newer VCR would be preferable, they are often capable of recording and playing a better picture anyway. Using an antenna cable vs composite video will probably degrade the image even more too.

If you need to only play your VCR and not record to it AND your cable box uses a different input on the TV (like HDMI) - no, leave it plugged directly to the TV. If your VCR and cable box both use the coaxial out to the TV - you will need to plug the cable from the cable box into the VCR’s input because there is usually no second coaxial input on the TV. If you need to record cable TV onto the VCR - you will also need the signal to go from the cable box to the VCR by a coaxial or an RCA cable.
