How to connect ANY controller to your Android device!

Ok but here's the issue, how do we keep our controllers from making system inputs, for example using the D pad will move what app is selected. I'm trying to map a controller but I can't map the D pad due to controller making system inputs. Any way to disable this?

If your Xbox One controller doesn't have the same material below the white Xbox button as the rest of the controller, that means it's an old version without bluetooth and you cannot connect it wirelessly!

I had a ps4 controller and it connects just fine, the only problem is that idk why but the circle button act as a back button on my phone, so when i try to play apex mobile with a controller i pretty much can do nothing apart from walking and shooting, does anyone know how to fix this?

It's probably hard coded in the game. The game is coded to recognize specific keycodes. This may also be an issue with your Android device - your device interprets your gamepad input in such a way and that's how your game gets it. Try on other devices and see. Demand from developers to always implement key AND AXIS remapping in their games, it might also not always work because of how your Android device picks up your gamepad, but most of the time is will work. Remapping input should be a basic feature always, hardcoded input is proof of laziness and ignorance! The same with cloud saves - all games and apps should provide it but still it's a luxury feature!!

my ps5 controler worked fine on andriod 11 but stopped working in andriod 12 in any game or app that recognises it as a ps5 controller has the wrong keymap. Funny enough if the app doesn't know its a ps5 controler it works fine. ex the ps5 controller gamepad tester tells me its using the wrong inputs but a normal gamepad tester works fine giving me the correct inputs. codm works of I tell it its a ps4 controller but not if I select ps5 controller. apex mobile doesn't work at all. so I can I use it in any app that lets me assign controls example an emulator. but not in anything new (yeah). so my commador emulator from 2008 works but not triple A game titles from current year.

I'm getting an 8bitdo specifically for Android (and Switch), I just came across this vid and suddenly thought maybe I should rethink my purchase, but now it's clear. Too bad. Oh well, that's how it is with these OS changes. It's not only different from device to device, but an OS upgrade can change a lot as well.... But this is really a sign of laziness and ignorance. If it worked before it should work now. Obviously these are issues that haven't aged and become obsolete! But it seems like the industry thinks so?!

Dont root your phone just to connect the ps3 controller wirelessly, it wont work on new android versions.

Exactly. Rooting often won't give you what you hope to get, if you haven't done it before. Unless you have very specific details from someone else, on the same hardware and software, then it's a bad idea. Don't root. Android is designed as is and often rooting won't help you at all but cause problems. If you need a specific functionality from an Android device then your best option is to search for reviews and help from others to find a device that will do it. Android is a very specific OS, it is NOT a desktop OS and rooting won't help most of the time unless you very, very well know what you are doing - you have experience or very specific information from others for THE SAME hardware and software. Try using a Chromebook, the modern versions are hybrids that have Android and Linux subsystems. Otherwise use a desktop OS. Don't root - don't count on turning Android into a desktop OS. Maybe in the future more functionality will be implemented to give us more control, but that has to be implemented by the designers and developers of Android, and accepted by the device manufacturers. Don't root, it's not worth it. If you have an issue with game saves being in the internal, private storage area of a game then the only solution is to demand from the game developers that they create save files easily accessible on public storage and also implement cloud saves. Cloud saves are the easiest and best solution for us gamers, ALL games (and apps) should implement this feature! Demand it from the developers! Otherwise we will suffer on and on. Don't root your devices.

Different devices handle peripherals differently. Different operating systems do the same (yes, Android is fine-tuned differently by device makers, even for each device model). And even on the same device an operating system upgrade can change how peripherals communicate with the operating system.

It's because games need to have controller compatibility coded in for the controller to work and most games on mobile don't have that

really informative video, got a bunch of pads my self, ones that are switch bluetooth locked, but they work really well with cable on tablet, i tossed away those bad chinese ones i got for a while is there a particularly universal guide to unlock them or they work only that way? the bluetooth is seen, but they wont connect i got them for 20 euro each on sale, good deal they have a xbox style layout very good for arcade games

Android devices won't have the drivers for N64 controllers - and you'd need an adapter to plug it in.

Try other devices and see if it works. Usually Android devices are designed for direct Bluetooth communication and even then and Android device (smartphone/tablet/...) might now let you use it because it doesn't have drivers for that gamepad, or the drivers it has don't handle your gamepad correctly.

I have an Android 10 tablet. Question, I wish to pay this game but it has onscreen controllers. I read on some sites that a Bluetooth our wired joystick plugged into my tablet won't work on games with onscreen controllers! I saw they also sell there's cute stick on devices over the onscreen controllers. But I was hoping to have my screen on my stand and not holding this big tablet. Is there away to make it possible to use a Bluetooth joystick paired to my tablet work on games with onscreen controllers???

The on-screen controls don't mean you can't use a physical controller. On-screen (virtual) input is there because it's a touch screen device in the first place and the game was designed for such a device. If the game was coded to handle physical input then you can use a gamepad, keyboard, mouse or whatever - providing your Android device has drivers for that input device, those drivers and your Android device can interpret your controller correctly and present it to the rest of the software (games, etc.). Then there is the issue if your game will interpret properly the input from the controller (via the Android operating system) so you can play! Many games are made in a lazy and ignorant fashion which is called hard coding. Hard coded input means that software (game) developer assign specific controller input (keycodes) to game functionality in a fixed, predetermined way. So you have no way to change which key or axis does what. So if your gamepad is working with other games but another game has fixed input (hard coded) for specific keycodes that your Android device does not provide, then you will either have no functionality in some keys or axes, or keys and/or axes will be messed up (wrong button/axis does the wrong in-game action). That's why all games should have the ability to remap input. And even then the game might not recognize keycodes that your Android operating system provides - or interpret them differently! So first of all always demand that developers provide the ability to remap buttons and axes. And they should also do their best to have their games handle keycodes and support as many devices as possible. Especially in 2023.... How many years does Android exist? How many years are people gaming on Android? It's like many think (or don't think at all) we are still many years in the past.... And virtual input (on-screen controls) can be sometimes toggled on or off. Some games hide it when they detect physical input, other will require changing the visibility in options. All on-screen controls CAN BE turned off or have opacity changed - it's implemented in the game, and depends on the developer giving you those options. Some games will let you change the size and position of their virtual input, even the shape and color of the controls. Demand from game developer robust input handling. It's not a problem, it's a very fundamental functionality that is often neglected ONLY because of laziness and ignorance. Android games can handle keyboard and mouse input as well, it's just a question if the devs give a damn. Not only are they forgetting that people use Bluetooth and wired keyboards and mice with smartphones, but especially with tablets (yes there are devices with larger screens devs!) and most notably there are also Chromebooks, which are hybrids of tablets with a built-in keyboard and mouse. But what are we talking about when developers don't implement gamepad input! Now game controllers have been around since 50 years.... The same goes for cloud saves. All games should implement this feature, but they treat it as something still so exotic.... And as a final note, check out Octopus keymapper, it's a wrapper application that runs your games "inside" it while providing an overlay that you can position on your game's on-screen controls and then map those overlay areas to real physical input.That's how I remember using it, but it made my games slow and was cumbersome to use.

If you don't see it in Bluetooth settings then you can't. Check if your gamepad has other modes of connection. Some gamepad have different combinations of key presses to connect to Windows (PC/Linux), Android or iOS. Check your gamepad documentation and try all modes of connection.

Try a usb-type C adaptor. Be aware some mobile games might not support this method and games will crash. Also, this method works with ALL types of wired keyboards that have usb.

A game must have implemented physical input use or it won't work. If the game doesn't read any input from physical input then it won't work. Simple. Ask your game developer to implement gamepad input - best with the ability to remap buttons and axes. But first check that you can use your gamepad on that particular Android device and some other games work with with, because your Android device might not connect with your gamepad.

I've got a dualshock ds4 controller and i want to connect it to my android 9 device (Huawei Nova 3)-- i use a cable thats micro-usb to type c and it doesnt work. ive tried it on the Samsung S8+ (also android 9) and it works immediately after connecting. It will never work, since Android 4.2 the libraries work differently for Bluetooth connectivity. The best solution is to use a USB adapter for Wii Classic Controller.
