Thank you for a very informative video. I have recently changed my internet provider from Sky to BT and found that my Wi-fi connection from my router to the Sky Q boxes kept dropping out, which was very annoying. I resolved the problem by connecting Ethernet cable from the router via a Ethernet switch to the two Q boxes and tv’s. Your video helped in explaining why this occurred in the first place after the change of ISP.

Hi. Bit late to this video. Absolutely brilliant and informative. Having fun with virgin broadband and sky. Using third party router virgin hub 3 on modem mode. Sky non box on WiFi speeds dropped. Connected via ethernet mesh created. Speeds all high through house. Mini box WiFi was slowing down speed as you stated. Thank you!!!

Thanks for the video. I have a BT router. I've also got a mini wired into the back of the main box. I'd also like to wire in the main box to the router. Given there's only one ethernet port on the back of the main box and the mini has to use that (as I'm on BT). Is it still possible to wire in the main to the router somehow?

You can have 2 Sky Q boxes on different accounts using the same router! All you do is create a VLAN so both boxes are on different segments. That way there's no interference.

Hi. Great video! I have a Sky router plus a main Q box and 1 mini. It was all connected by wifi with the help of a sky booster. Speeds on wifi were terrible but coverage was good. I have now wired both sky boxes via a network switch and id just like to know if there is any advantage in keeping the booster on now? Will it continue to boost wifi signal around the house or does this just "talk" to sky boxes over wifi?

Great video. Thank you. I’m planning to run Ethernet cable to a garden cabin for a Sky Q mini & internet use. I’m thinking a catenary wire from the house to the cabin with the Ethernet attached to the wire. Concerns are: is the Ethernet cable UV stable (would it degrade). 2) would lightning be attracted to it & possibly damage the router & beyond? Better to run the external part in plastic conduit saddled to the garden fence? Is flat Ethernet cable ok for the job? Thoughts?

Thanks for that. I’ve got a Netgear Orbi mesh setup and Skyq + 2 minis which obviously doesn’t play nicely. If I connect all Sky devices by Ethernet do they all need to be connected directly to the main orbi router (via switch) or does mesh mean I could connect to any of the orbi satellites? I.e. sky main-orbi main / sky minis-orbi satellite

I have 4 x mini boxes - connected to a switch - it doesn't seem to work - do they need to be plugged directly into the Sky Router? I had to pair them up initially via wifi / WPS button - then took upstairs (out of wifi range) plugged into ethernet and no success. I wonder if I should set it up differently?

The sky q main box is connected to the m5 via the Ethernet output working great but the two minis have poor wifi, if I put a switch on the 2nd port on the router then wire the minis to it would it work ? Or will the main q box needed to be wired to the switch ? Thanks

Thanks for your question. I do know that some mesh systems are quite arrogant towards each other and don't like working with each other. However, I see that you mentioned that you're going to put another switch on the port of the router and then the mini to the switch. That should work. What a lot of people tend to do, and this is where it fails, is they put an Ethernet cable from their mini box to a third-party router. And yes, it's establishing an Internet connection to the mini, however, it's not creating the mesh through the third-party router. So the way you're describing it, I believe it should work. By the way, the main Skybox, is it connected to your secondary mesh router, or is it plugged in directly to the Sky router? Try it out the way you described it. If it works, please let us know here so others can benefit from it too. Hope this works

In the back garden outhouse scenario where the mini box is hard wired, your diagram only says connected to the 'house' do you mean hard wired to the main box which is working on the WiFi or would you run the outside Ethernet back to the router (which in this case is not a sky router) thanks
@BeemerBeysProductions
@BeemerBeysProductions 2 жыл бұрын
, apologies I should have made the instructions slightly clearer as there are different different scenarios is impossible to describe every single one but yes in your situation the mini box out of the house will need to be connected either to the switch or to the sky Q box directly if that sky Q box is connected to the Wi-Fi. The mini box can also be connected via a a switch full stop the mini box should never be connected directly to the 3rd party router the minibus can be connected directly to a Sky router as it's shares the same mesh system which will be recognised by the router and the sky Q boxes. I hope this answered your question

Great video which explains my situation clearly. The minis are continuing dropping off wifi/ sky connections. Ok so I got Sky Q main + 3 mini boxes. One of the boxes (bedroom) has a sky Q booster. My Wi-fi is mobile broadband (EE) which in itself reliable and fast(ish). The main box is at one end of the house in the living room and so is the broadband box. The minis are spread thought the house at the other end. I’ve got BT whole home Wi-fi extender discs which also running off the B’band. If I were to install an Ethernet switch it wouldn’t be feasible to run exposed cables to where they’re need. Other than running an Ethernet between sky Q main and broadband and then relying on Wi-fi for the minis, is there anything else I can do?? I had thought about power lines but you presentation would suggest otherwise. Cheers Andy

Thanks for your message. First off, I'm trying to understand type running Bt discs off Ee Broadband. Does that work?? Power lines, In my opinion do not work. Some may swear by it, but don't really understand the science of it. Unless you live in a one floor cottage. If your WiFi is good then i would say leave it at our it's, unless you're having streaming issues on the minis. Ethernet is the way to go, for proper reliability, remember you can run the cable out of the house round and into the rooms for less exposure inside, sometimes it's so much easier. Ive got a 16 way switch, I've run mine into every room and hardwired all my static devices such as Q, x box, tv etc. Eases the WiFi on the rest of my portable devices.

Have the router somewhere in the middle, like say the hallway, off the floor. Keep it well away from Boilers, water pipes etc and defo out of any cupboards, Wifi needs to spread, not be contained. Also away from any mirrors. In terms of upstairs or downstairs, keep it always next to the master socket.

Hi You are right it could be the last mini it's having a strain on the entire setup. Ethernet can definitely resolve the issue, or you can get a booster to fit halfway between the main /mini and the new mini. Q: Did you have this issue since the first time you got the additional mini Q: Did you set up the mini yourself? Q: Which BT router have you got?

Hi one thing bear in mind that Wi-Fi signals travelling over open air is very difficult it doesn't have anything to bounce off and Wi-Fi would just disperse into thin air you may have one or two bars coming from the booster which is inside however catching it onto another item is going to be difficult I'm going to make one thing clear you will need to run the Ethernet cable directly from one of the sky Q equipment to your cabin to your mini box inside the cabin trying to do what you're doing is going to prove to be very difficult and you're adding extra legs to the Wi-Fi which technically is going to have a huge impact to your entire system if you want you can send me a picture of your setup to my email address but give what I suggested a go

Then plug that ethernet cable into an ethernet switch, can I then plug an ethernet cable from the switch into my sky q mini box and any ethernet cabled device (tv, xbox, ps4, laptop etc) and that will give any of those devices wired Internet access?? @BeemerBeysProductions 6 ай бұрын
@@jonathoncookson3350 So, with the SkyQ system, there's a dedicated mesh system connecting the main box to the mini boxes. This system can be sensitive and may not interact well with other mesh systems common in modern devices. To improve connectivity, consider installing a booster near the end of your main house. This allows the mini box to seek the Wi-Fi signal from the booster. Simply having a good internet connection on your mobile or laptop doesn't ensure communication with the mini box. It needs to locate the main Sky box specifically. Two potential solutions are suggested. First, try installing a booster near the end of your house and see if it improves connectivity. Use WPS to connect the mini box to the booster. Alternatively, the better option would be a direct ethernet connection. Mini boxes aren't designed for outhouses over Wi-Fi, even with high internet speeds or mesh networks. In summary, test the booster solution and use WPS, but the ideal setup involves a direct ethernet connection for optimal performance.
@jonathoncookson3350
@jonathoncookson3350 6 ай бұрын
@@BeemerBeysProductions thanks for that. The TP links is next to the mini box’s so I thought that would help with the signal. Could I connect the two mini box’s to the TP link using Ethernet would that work? Or am I best ringing sky and getting a booster of them?
@BeemerBeysProductions
@BeemerBeysProductions 6 ай бұрын
@@jonathoncookson3350 What I would do, is reset the network connection on that mini-box. Then, follow my video what I showed you, by pressing WPS on the main box, then WPS on the mini-box, and then put the Ethernet cable from the TP-Link to the mini-box. Try it out. If it doesn't work, it's most likely that the mini-box is trying to create a network with your TP-Link, individually to your internet, rather than going to the Skybox. Try it out, and let me know how you get on.

Really useful video, answered a lot of questions I have spent hours trying to find last few days... but can you help me please as I can't seem to find this answer anywhere....My new house has a garden building/summerhouse that I am going to use as an office... the internet speed coming into my sky router in my house is 70mbps. The sky q main box is connected to it via WiFi and I have a further skq q mini box (connected by WiFi) at the end of the house nearest the garden which has a speed of about 60mbps. As soon as I step outside, that speed dies to about 15mbps and by time I am at the summerhouse it is 3mbps. What I want to know is, can I connect that mini box to another in the summerhouse via ethernet (as the mesh WiFi isn't enough to give me more than 3mbps in the summerhouse). Put more simply can I set it up like this... Sky router >> WiFi >> sky main box >> WiFi >> sky q mini >> ethernet >> sky q mini. Thanks!
@BeemerBeysProductions
@BeemerBeysProductions 3 жыл бұрын
Ok. So the easiest way to understand is wifi travels by bouncing off your Internet walls, surfaces etc. As soon as you step outside, the WiFi has nothing to bounce off and will dissappear. You might be lucky to get some WiFi if you're near the last bounce near your house. You will need to follow the diagram ive set so you can get connectivity in your outhouse

Eventually got around to that as its in the right place. But still have very poor signal at the mini box. Drip outs etc. even trying the system 001 Ethernet doesn’t show. I have set up the main box and mini boxes to operate via ethernet. The only thing that may be causing it, but I'm not sure, is that one of the mini boxes does not connect to the switch but connects directly into the back of my BT router. Do you think this could be causing the problem? Hi Thanks for your message. Mini box cannot connect directly to the router, don't do it will talk to the router and not your Q system. All the connections need to come into the switch. The only time a mini can go directly to the router is when it's a Sky Router. It's the way the mesh system works. If the problem persists, you may need to call Sky and they can do a mesh test to see how the boxes are talking to eachother. But first and foremost, don't connect the mini straight to the router. Get a ethernet cable to run from the router or get yourself a booster / repeater to sit on the middle somewhere between the 2 points

Hi... So I understand this correctly.. The mini box needs to wired into the main q box? Is that true? Can it not be wired to the router instead?
@BeemerBeysProductions
@BeemerBeysProductions 3 жыл бұрын
No. Otherwise it won't talk to the Main q it will connect to the router and create its own network... UNLESS ITS A SKYQ ROUTER, YOU CAN CONNECT TO THE ROUTER

Wifi Speed tests whilst standing next to the router gives me a reading of 160mbps... But I barely get 15mbps in my office room which is a sore point. So I'm going to be taking a ethernet cable to my office room and putting in a switch as I've got a few devices that would benefit from being wired. The mini is in the same room as the router but the room is quite big and the mini struggles to keep up when watching live football matches. This is the reason why I'm going to run another ethernet cable via the router into the mini. I have the option of connecting the main box to the mini... It'll cost me more in cable and trunking and I don't see the point.

If WIFIdoes not travel through air, how can you explain the fact that I get full internet access with iPad, phone, laptop in my summerhouse 30 metres from router installation???
@BeemerBeysProductions
@BeemerBeysProductions 3 жыл бұрын
It does travel through air, but won't be effective. As an example, it will still connect, but strength won't be great. Test your speed from inside them check your summerhouse you will see a difference

Hey Buddy, Thank you so much for this video. I am having some issues trying to connect my Mini box via an ethernet cable. I have an outhouse which I am trying to get sky working in. • I have a sky router in my house • I have connected an ethernet cable and channelled outside, all the way to the outhouse (way out of range of the router) • I have connected the ethernet cable to a new router in the outhouse • I have connected a new ethernet cable from the new router to a sky mini box • I followed the advice on the internet to disable the wifi • The mini box is updating, as in menus show content that is new, however..... • No channel loads, I get a black screen and technical fault displayed on the screen Any advice how I can get this working?

Hi. Reset the network connection on the mini. Disconnect the Ethernet cable and start again. Also check your ethernet cable. amzn.to/3i54VPA

Don't disable the WiFi. If you have sky router, it will act as a WiFi hot-spot

Yes, will definitely sort the issue out. If we do continue to get pixelation, bear in mind, pixelation can also be linked to satellite signal as well. Let me know how you get on, if it did fix the issue by running Ethernet from router to Minis for the benefit of all. Good luck.

@@BeemerBeysProductions thank you I don’t think there’s pixelation on the main box tbh. Also when the minis go in to standby overnight when I turn them back on and go to network it says there’s a problem with the internet connection but it’s fine. Should it display that

@@JackJohnson-ry1il Make sure also, all the boxes, they're on the same power setting, i.e. if you've got them on eco mode, then they all need to be on eco mode. There's an active mode and there's none. Just make sure they're all on the same setting. You can turn it off, that means your box will always be on then. Let me know how you get on.

Hi Reason why is probly cutting out is that you've got the mini box connected directly to the router. You can't do that as the mini box will be looking Internet from the router, not connecting to the main box. Better to have a ethernet switch connected to the router, then a ethernet cable from the switch to the mini box.
There’s NO WAY this works - Debunking bogus network splitters.
