Mulled windows are two or more separate windows that have been joined together to fit into a single opening in a wall. Mulled sets require windows to be permanently attached together during installation.
Mulling is a process that involves joining two or more windows together. It can be done at a factory or on-site during new home construction, remodel or window replacement projects. However, the complications that come with this design choice make it impossible to combine two oversized windows.
Whether you're looking to update your windows style and function or simply want to increase your home's energy efficiency, there are a number of reasons you may be looking to learn how to install a window. Like many home projects, window replacement can be done in a DIY capacity and doesn't necessarily require a contractor to be done right.
INSTALLATION PROCESS
Measure, measure, measure - It’s important to make sure you’re measuring correctly when doing any home improvement, but it’s essential when you’re cutting a hole in your home. Measure everything at least twice.
Create the opening - Next, comes the part where you have to be exceptionally careful because you’ll be cutting a large hole in your home. You’ll probably have to cut the opening larger than the rough opening to accommodate the supporting frame and header. It may take an entire day to create the opening as well as remove the drywall and frame in the window.
Frame the window - Make sure that your window is structurally secure and will not sag over time by using the proper framing methods. Put lower wall stud cripples in underneath the window opening to support the windowsill, and allow water to drain by installing the windowsill at a slight 1-inch slope.
Finish opening the wall - Once the framing is in place, you’ll be able to finish opening the wall. Drill pilot holes from the inside at each corner to locate the window opening from the exterior of your home. A 12-inch drill bit should be enough to work. Then, draw a line using a straightedge to connect the drill holes, which will be the area for you to cut out.
Install the window - Finally, you’ll be able to place the window. Use a nailing fin or integral flange to secure your new vinyl or metal windows to the house. This helps protect your house from moisture infiltration.
