How To Connect Your Raspberry Pi To A Mobile Hotspot

Raspberry Pis are awesome. Duh.
There is a problem though when you need wireless connectivity and you are away from a WiFi network. For example, if you are out in the field with a Raspberry Pi drone, how are you supposed to log into the Pi to run your scripts?!
With Mobile Hotspots, connectivity is simple.
Simply connect your Laptop/Ground Control Station and Raspberry Pi to your Mobile Hotspot network, and BOOM. All your devices can communicate wirelessly!
This would be particularly useful for a Raspberry Pi drone. Hey, did I already mention those?! Well you can learn more about Raspberry Pi drones at this link!

I was trying this today. I could connect easily to my Laptop using my wifi but I was amazed how it didn't work with hotspot. And a notification popped up... I was like... what!!! What a timing !!!

Hi! First of all great video, really easy to follow. I have a problem though, I want my raspberry to be able to connect to a open wifi so I added it with the SSID name and the command "wpa cli -i wlan0 set_network [num] key_mgmt NONE". So it has no password. The problem is that when I try to make a mobile hotspot with the same exact SSID name and no password, I am able to connect from my laptop but the Raspberry is not connecting to it. How would you do it so it can connect? I have added other wifis with passwords and the raspberry connects perfectly.

Wait, so does your phone also have to be on the drone? To stay close to the hotspot and stay connected? Or is the hotspot just so you can make changes to the script on the fly?

Found the reason why I was unable to see/connect my raspberry pi to my iPhone 13 Pro Plus was I had to go into the hotspot and turn on Maximize compatibility.

every time I try this, I end up messing something up and the raspi wont connect with any wifi and I have no way to reach it. Then I have to reconfigure the whole thing and start from scratch. Any tips?

Wouldn't bringing another wireless router set up with the same SSID and password as your home one work? You don't need internet access, so it should work.

Hi! Great video! Guys, do u know why i cant connect a galaxys9 to rpi4 ? wpa_sup file correct format. no filters, no blocking. ubuntu 20.04 easily connects. password ssid correct. tried ssid_scan=1 daemon reload, restart dhcpcd, wpa_cli -i wlan0 reconfigure done. tried different ssid pw combinations and syntax. tried capturing wlan0 traffic to see handshake but couldnt with tcpdump nor with wireshark, seems to be no packets at all. Pi sees ssid. I read all over, it seems to be a nobrainer to connect, still i cant pls heeelp :'(
