Fishing AROUND the Spawn for Smallmouth Bass Late Prespawn, Spawn, Post Spawn When - 53 - 70* stable weather or warming trend conditions. Want the water to be warming because this will help fish move off of the deep breaks and have them roaming on shallow cover, looking for spawning areas Where - target shallow cover. Shallow is relative based on body of water and water clarity. In glacial style bodies of water with ultra clean water this could be 6” of water out to 30’ but on tannic/dirty reservoirs or rivers could be less than 5’ of water. Target shallow flats near the main lake around hard cover. Smallmouth typically spawn closer to the main lake. They will spawn around hard cover with semi hard/hard bottoms. Glacial bodies of water - small contour change or ditches, any cover, Marl bottom Rivers/Reservoirs - Sea walls with mixed rock /sand, boulders, current eddies, anywhere with slack water semi protected Great Lakes - shallow flats, islands, connecting rivers. The Smallmouth Experience no thank you! I fish the Pacific Northwest so besides the gobies pretty much everything in the Midwest applies to me which has helped a lot! Also a bait I found works super good on smallies is a keitech in electric blue and chartreuse. A wacky color I know but it just triggers the smallies for whatever reason when nothing else seems to. Gonna have to try making some hair jigs like you talked about in the video a few weeks back. Never used one but heard so many great things about them.

You ever use a roach bait? I know eh, never heard of them either before I found some in a European store. Basically a swim bait trailing a couple spinner blades. I was fishing for pike last spring in shallow water and kept catching spawning small mouth. They loved that bait. Thanks for great video

These are all great tips . I have had success lately on a small swimbait . Like a 3.25/3.3 in . What I did run into was the ailwifes or minnows where up shallow spawning first thing in the morning at th launch. Do you fish the minnow spawn at all?If so would love to see a vid . Our wayer temps where so cold and really really fast its 65 . We have a full moon Friday so hope can see a bunch Saturday . Hope all is well bud.
