Steve, credit where it is due; this video is revelatory for me. I am a single midi act using automated lights; I have decided to go with l.e.d. lights and could get a Chauvet Obey70 or something similar to control them BUT they have no midi outs so I can’t program the lights and have my laptop software record my changes/scenes/chases. I have an old NSI TLC-16 and could not get it to operate properly with the new led pucks. Your video showed I do not need it anymore so right after I watched this I bought an Obey 40 online and the NSI is going to be listed very soon. Thanks so very much for all your videos...they are lifesavers! Jeff

Very helpful videos. I own an American DJ DMX controller that is the exact same setup and controls as yours, and an American DJ Startec Stinger spot that is identical to your gobo-spot. That's all awesome and I've learnt a lot from watching your vids about DMX (it's something I've just gotten into) But that seems only useful when your music is also coming from your midi sequencer. What I can't seem to get my head around is how this is done live with DJs etc. You watch live shows and the lights are always bang in time and fit with the music (eg quiet hands I'm the air bit most lights off, big cool Lazer sweeping up and down, lots of smoke) Am I right in thinking there is just one guy somewhere who really knows how to use his controller and has loads of scenes and just hits them in the right place. If so wow I never knew that guy existed and only now realise what a hard and very rewarding job he's (or she) has got. I bow In respect for these people and the amazing job they do.

There are definitely a lot of amazing lighting guys running some amazing shows. Some bands are playing to backing audio tracks with MIDI tracks controlling the lights. There are also apps light Soundswitch that analyze audio in a DJ rig and automatically program light effects--there are lots of cool ways to produce great effects with the right setup!

This is the sickest thing, being a musician who's digital piano doubles as a midi controller, and being a DJ it's like > why haven't I done this already!! Ty for making this video, randomly popped up but see, musicians(instrumentalists) and DJs rarely are the same thing Wonder if possible to do this through a computer and interface, to have a guitar as a midi controller for the lights 🤔 So excited with all the possibilities this opens up

Just a note, for MIDI controllers, I'd recommend a Launchpad or similar controller over a piano-style keyboard. They tend to be cheaper, and it's a lot easier to mash a square button than it is to try to find the black keys when your live set is absolutely... ahem, "turnt." Not to mention they come with Ableton Live, which includes some of the best MIDI manipulation tools on the market.

I wonder if there's a way to control a DMX Controller on stage with a Behringer FCB1010 Footswitch Controller (or similar) Song 1 - Bank 1 = 10 Scenes in it : [(Scene 1) Intro - (Scene 2) Verse - (Scene 3) Chorus - (Scene 4) Solo - (Scene 5) Ending] Song 2 - Bank 2 = 10 Scenes in it : [(Scene 1) Intro - (Scene 2) Verse - (Scene 3) Chorus - (Scene 4) Solo - (Scene 5) Ending] And so on... @LearnLizard
@LearnLizard 2 жыл бұрын
That’s an interesting question- I’ve only really used triggered scenes from the computer (as opposed to chases) because once I had that workflow down it was easier for me to create a sequence of scenes on the computer than a chase on the controller. That being said you may be able to program your MIDI notes to “latch” depending on your software so you don’t have press the note again. Sorry I’m not more help on this one…

I have been trying this. Work fine for calling up scenes. When I call up a chase, the chase does not start unless I hit the Auto button on the Obey 40. If I leave the Auto button on all the time, then I can’t go back to a scene without it going forward to the next one. Any thoughts on this? Thanks

Steve, love your vids!! I want to know how to program a blackout from my Donner MK25 keyboard to a Rockforce 384 light controller? I have the 384 rack mounted and theMK25 sitting on top of another keyboard I play, and would love to able to black out the lights without reaching for the blackout button on the rockforce. Years ago I used a laptop and the light would go on with 1 press and go off on the 2nd press of the same key. Now, i can only switch from 1 light to another and they always always on. Any ideas? I don't know all the Rockforce 384 functions, but I'm thinking the best way to do this would be to program a "black out scene" (scene with dimmer set to 0) and then program the MK25 to trigger that scene. (at least that's how I would do it) Appreciate you watching!

How do you connect a Behringer fcb1010 board to a dmx512 control board through midi??????
@LearnLizard
@LearnLizard 2 жыл бұрын
You have to program the 1010 to send MIDI notes instead of program change commands. (lots of foot pedals won't let you do that, but you can on the Behringer) Most basic hardware DMX controllers that I have seen like the the Obey 40 only respond to MIDI notes for scene and chase triggering.

When I was experimenting with the audio trigger mode (or what the Obey 40 calls "Music Chase Playback") it only seemed to work reliably with tracks that had a loud and consistent kick drum in the mix. Other odd meter or regular rock songs that I tried didn't sync very well. As an alternative, there is also a "Tap Sync" function that you could try to keep things playing together better. Your milage may vary, but that was my experience. Appreciate you watching...

Specific question about the Obey 40, if I select Scene 1 twice in a row it seems to turn off scene 1 and go back to whatever is set in manual mode. It also does this when selecting the same scene but in a different bank. This is extremely annoying when trying to "play" a show with a keyboard, selecting the same scene on any bank blacks out the stage. Thanks!

Hi- The MIDI functions on the Obey 40 are pretty limited and I don't know of any work arounds to do exactly what you want. However one idea is to program your chases with a simple midi program/sequencer and trigger your static scenes or "sequences" from one device.

I was wondering how you might trigger a chase from the keyboard but to be honest, if you go the sequencer route chases become effectively redundant - am i right? Provided sufficient thought's gone into creating scenes then programmer the sequencer to recall scenes is in effect a chase; or at least that's my understanding.

Thank you Steve(LearnLizard) for taking the time making these videos! I have learned a lot from your experience. I do have a question that implies with “Angler.digital” and “Martin George”. Is that I would like to use chases to have a controlled fade in and out effect during a show. You did mention to “Jacob Nielsen” 11 months ago about how you can't control the fade time on the Obey 40 via MIDI. But if pre-program a chase with a long fade time, your scanners should slowly move from each scene to the next. What steps would I need to take to get the pre-programed chase to work with MIDI? All it does is open the chase, but the sequence of scenes on that chase program doesn’t activate, since MIDI is not activating the AUTO button on the Obey 40. Plus is there any way around the part that “Angler.digital” mentioned in his question about “When selecting the same scene but in a different bank the lights black out on stage.” Thanks in advance and thanks again Steve for your great videos!

Most software controllers (or sequencers as in this video) will let you save settings and programs for recall (on the same or similar devices) For simple hardware controllers (as in this video) you are stuck with having to reprogram on each device.

that doesn't work with my dmx controller when i connect it to the keyboard. Which buttons i need to press for to programm? thanks!!

If your DMX controller accepts MIDI control make sure you are connected from the keyboard to the MIDI "in" jack on the controller. (and not a fog control jack which may look the same) Then you need to set your keyboard to the lowest possible octave which should start with MIDI note 00. (some keyboard won't go that low) Now if you have scenes programmed into the first bank of the DMX controller, the lowest keys on the keyboard should trigger them. Hope that makes sense and good luck getting it working!

I have an M Audio Oxygen 25 midi keyboard, but it only has a type A output, not the normal usb output or even a 5 pin midi output. Can I use some kind of adapter for my keyboard to go into my Obey40?

Thats a really good question. I believe to make it work you would need a USB MIDI Host Module like this: www.amazon.com/USB-MIDI-Host-Module-controllers/dp/B0752M869X Let me know if you get it working so others can know too. And thanks for watching.

im looking into this for a project im working on. would this also be made possible when playing multiple notes at the same time, or have each octave for example connected to one light, so that you are able to create different combinations of colors with every chord, if that makes sense and can i combine this light trigger with the audio of the keyboard itself?

In this particular setup (with an Obey 40 controller) your creative options are somewhat limited. Each single MIDI note from the keyboard with trigger whatever scene you have programmed. (you can also trigger each step in a chase with audio separately) Doing more interesting things (as you are describing) is best done with a software controller (and there are many to choose from)

Steve can a dmx controller use its onboard mic to sync lights without just syncing the timing of scene changes ? So in other words if the controller is being used in real time without pre programmed scenes. Thanks.

On the simple DMX hardware controllers I am familiar with (like the Obey 40 in this video) the mic only triggers scenes or chases as you say. However several software controllers I have seen have functions that will control the lights directly using sound and even distinguish between different frequencies of the sound to control different attributes. In most instances, if you really want the best control of your rig, you need to use software based controllers.

Hey! So I am using a Rockville rock force 386 controller. I am also using a usb to midi interface so I can run midi notes over my backtracks to trigger scenes. When the midi note plays it won’t trigger any scenes. I’ve checked and they are on the same midi channel. Just wondering if you had any ideas what’s wrong

There are a few things that have to be exactly right for this to work (it took me a while to figure out) First, if you have scenes programmed in Bank 1 you need the very lowest MIDI notes to trigger them. (Notes 00-07) Nothing else will work. Also, some sequencers will send continuous MIDI note off data (to avoid sticking notes) You need to turn that off or filter it out to make this work. Hope that helps and good luck!
