How to Convert 3s to 2s Lipo How To-Bad Cell/Puffy Pack

This is what I did to convert a Traxxas 3s lipo into a 2s battery when one of the cells in the pack went bad.
WARNING: There is a fire hazard with doing this, Lipo batteries are very dangerous!

When changing a balance plug be VERY sure that the pins are firmly in place. I changed one out and I thought that the pins were ok, but when I pulled the battery from my Tx, 2 pins came out and instantly welded. It was maybe only 3 seconds, but the battery is now totally dead. I was lucky there was no fire!

The balancing socket for 3s is remade in the socket for 2s! You had to remove a red wire from the balancing socket and for plus contact to use a blue wire!!!

Try using a common "T" pin to remove those wires from the plug next time, it works better than that big tip prick you used!

Unless you have a small light truck (crawler?) with a huge battery tray this is a dangerous waste of time. Nobody wants a 2S slash. 2S is good for buggy or touring car only.

have you had any trouble soldering to the tabs on the lipo? i cant seem to get any to stick no matter what flux or temp this happened on 2 different lipo brands i tryied this on

It's a pain. I've had a few that I couldn't do because of this exact reason. I just call those a wash and toss them since I don't want to risk issues from something coming loose. Suck though.

I've had good luck with Floureon and Venom-but make sure you're cautious of which battery connector you need! The biggest thing for lipo batteries is storage as I find most of the time damaged batteries come from improper storage. Of course regardless of battery manufacturer, they can still have an occasional bad cell after a while. My Floureon 5200 7.4v battery will last most of the day im my team associated rc10 T3 i got a 3300 kv brushless motor an 45amp esc an an does about 20 25 depending on with tire I got on.

I just did this and you did an amazing tutorial but I didn't use heat shrink as a case I used trusty duct tape and some really tough cardboard and it should work pretty good because I've used this type of cardboard with other thing as well.

You need a bag like this: amzn.to/2ST3BUc Although depending on how many batteries you have, I'd get smaller bags for each of them too. If one starts on fire and it's sitting next to the other ones...Keep the lipos stored at proper voltage and you should be okay. You can also keep them in a ceramic pot in the house, too.

@@rcfundyer5739 reason being is as a airtight storage box made of metal, should a fiery poof happen the oxygen within the box will be consumed by the fire, no oxygen no fire, problem solved, family safe.

Hey great vid. Do you have any advice for a 3s 2200 shorty lipo that the 3rd cell charges too fast, and discharges too slowly. Wont balance. That trouble cell is at 4.5 and two others at 3.5 etc... help

Discharge it. Dispose it. And next time use balance mode to charge or go back to NIMH. There is no reason for a Lipo to exceed 4.2v per cell

You could do this to nimh/nicd too. You'll need to be able to solder the top of a battery which is usually harder.

Anybody that cuts a lipo apart is an idiot you never mess with lipo batteries its not worth a fire because you were too cheap to buy a new one! If one cell is puffy the rest will follow dont be stupid drop it in a bucket of salty water for a day or two and throw it out
