As a firefighter I highly recommend keeping a CO2 extinguisher located outside your charging area. A standard ABC will work but should a fire occur the CO2 extinguisher wont produce the mess involved with an ABC. Also if you charge in a room. Definitely have that charge box. Been to quite a few fires recently involving battery abuse.

Right on, I just retired after 23yrs on the job, when I got into the hobby 6yrs ago I was a little cocky about the safety, thinking I've seen battery fires before. Had a cheap ass charger and did almost zero research into charging a lipo pack. Was using a lipo bag, but was renovating basement, and my abc and CO2 extinguishers were not in normal place. My first quad was a pre-built racer from a guy online, was common back then to use balance lead to power vtx. So I was charging 4s 1300mah, no balance lead, wrong setting, and bam it went from thermal run away to working fire in like 20sec. Melted lipo safety bag like it was a plastic gas station bag. Drywall started to ignite 3ft away, no flame impingement, straight radiant heat. Dumped 2 lrg glassed of water on it while gf tried to find extinguishers I moved. finally found the ABC one, which was a nice 10lb-er I thought would be plenty, it barely put it out..lol. I've told that story to many people getting into the hobby, they are no joke.

I meant to say this originally, but went off topic...Was so pissed at myself I went the other way on safety, I built a lipo bunker box with a self extinguishing feature using AFFF. Well, not the real stuff, but it's cheap to make, baking soda with a splash of Potassium Sorbate mixed, and tossed in the bottom of an old mammo box. Then I rigged a system on the peg board above it, using Folgers coffee can with some white vinegar and splash of dish soap in it, tied to fishing string going down into the ammo box. Fire breaks fishing line, dumps can of vinegar n soap on baking soda lined in bottom of box, poof, you got AFFF knock off, foam. I'm working on making a video on how it works, I'll post here when finished.

I always get a Sharpie and write numbers on my batteries. That way I can effectively rotate them so they all get equal use. I can also keep track of a certain battery if it's not performing on par with the rest of them. Thanks for another informative video!

Yes I do the same and figure most people also number and date their batteries when new too. What I found is important is to always use/charge them in order...1,2,3,4,5,6,7, etc. which creates a pattern and makes a weak battery stand out as well as keeping track of their charge states by memory without guessing. I used to keep a log but found doing that provides enough information to maintain and monitor them. I call it a rule now after doing so exposed a bad charger port on a 4 port multi-charger. Thought it was a bad battery at first.

@@plasticapple704 but are you actually keeping track of how many cycles they have? Knowing their internal resistance is what you need to know. Also knowing which cells are out of balance. If you don't have a charger that shows you the IR and is capable of balance charging to veey close MV it doesn't matter how much you keep track of things or rotate. That's honestly a waste of time as it doesn't do anything. A good charger such as a icharger 308duo you can actually track all of that with their charging software. But seeing the IR is what you need to see. The more use the higher it goes. And cheap batteries like turnigy come with out of matched cells. The pack is only as good as the worst cell.

The videos of fires REALLY drive your points home. I am relatively new to drones and I did not know ALL of this stuff until now. In the beginning I was leaving my 2s batteries fully charged for months until i learned about leaving them at 50%. Only one swelled, maybe 1-2mm on each side.(it was safely disposed of) Now, I have a very nice battery charger with lots of diagnostics (Which I need to master). This vid showed me I still have a lot to learn.

Also, I have two batteries for the motors, a separate 36v 10amp and 36v 40amp big block to let one work at then let the other rest

As usual,great advice. I for one din't understand the dangers of LiPo's when i 1st got into our great RC hobby untill i had a 1S rip on me when removing it from a drone, plug came off and wires crossed !! luckily it was a 300Mah but boy did it go off like a firework. Lesson learned. 👍🛩🚗

Many areas now have "Do Not..." and "Must Recycle..." ordinances in place which prohibit disposal of these in household trash. Check with your local authorities. So true! Might just be us here in Scandinavia, but we've been recycling batteries since at least the 80s and every hardware and electronics store, gas station and most grocery stores have recycling bins. If I see anyone throw batteries in the trash I'm like "You fucking monster!"

Storage charge is 3.85 volts per cell. #11: Don't bang them on the table. #12: Don't pull on the wires. #13: Check the internal resistance of the cells occasionally. If one or more cells gets much higher than the others, dispose of the battery.

I don’t use lipo’s for rc’s but I do use them with my Airsoft guns and this information is still very useful thanks. I understand that you can never be too safe but I’ve had lipo’s for years and have never seen a fire… yet. I just charge them on a metal pan that I can quickly grab and toss out the window if need be, and I’m always within a couple of feet whenever I’m charging them so I can catch any early warning signs. That’s also something that should be mentioned is that they will typically give an early warning sign that it’s gonna fail and eventually combust. Things like cracking or popping sounds, a funny fruity smell, or the battery is too hot to the touch. If any of these things occur I tend to stop charging and take the battery outside to give a second to cool off before disposing cause at that point there’s no reason to risk using it again just buy another.

I always put my swollen lipo batterys in salt water, i leave battery for around 3 to 4 days in a bucket to discharge, do not remove once you have placed in salt wateter until 4 days, ihave done this for over twenty years, and disposed of hundreds, thankfully we have great C ratings on batterys today stoping stress on cells giving longer lipo life, discharging a swollen battery with discharge charger is good but i have seen them get agitated and burn up, get an extension lead and discharge in the middle of a open space outside, stay away if you see fire as the gases are strong and temperature can reach 600C, let it burn out no water, i was told over twenty years ago to put them into 20% sea salt to 70% cold water, this information was from a battery manufacturer, the batterys will turn to paper type slug in 4 days making it safe to dispose of in recycling, do this in a open space and away from pets and children and me ;) Stay safe guys and have fun with your toys, don't store lipo batterys in your home, ive come close to house fire in my early days of model flying large aircraft.

I've heard that immersing in salt water is not a good idea. The terminals can corrode before the charge is all gone from the plates of the cells. So I connect my old batteries to some 12v car bulbs and leave them until the bulbs no longer glow - then I put them in salt water for another couple of days.

@@stedenvideos3825 i agree, but ive never had a problem with using salt and water over many years with using 2s-3s-4s-5s-6s, draining with a bulb could put strain on the battery depending on what type of wattage bulb you use-and the voltage of battery, draining with low wattage would be good to trickle discharg and then salt water as you mentioned.

I just won't recommand that because in case of any cell is a little damaged then you will put lithium in your water, water that you will empty in your sink or toilets what is absolutly terrible for nature. Just fully discharge by connecting to your battery anything that uses curant such as a light bulb for exemple until is is completly empty, now you can also find some lipo-killers in your hobby store.

Thanks my friend for the great information and safety tips. I wasn't aware of the dangers. But I never charge my batteries unattended and gave great battery appropriate charges. Before watching this video I was going to parallel connect two 72 volt lithium batteries for longer range. One is 35 ah and the other one is 17.5. Combined 52.5 amp hour. Whit my components I would of gotten 150 kms. Give or take,depending on riding style,top speed, rider weight road grade(incline.decline).wind ,tire pressure,and outside temperature . I am not doing that cause it something. If bad happens,there go both of my batteries and they are very expensive. Thanks for the great advice. You mat have saved me alot of unnessscary problems.

Been in rc since the early 80s seen the batteries change ,actually raced not just play and seen a many of battery disasters, manly as you say not knowing and stretching the poor battery, and your most definitely right as about chargers ,many times took the ole battery apart moved cells around so they wouldn't mess up ,so many out there no nothing about this ,now we got balance build in the charger ,if they use it

Nice comprehensive video on Lipo maintenance. Use a Lipo killer to discharge the battery to 0v before disposal. Most Chargers will only discharge to minimum cell voltage. Thanks.
