You made a breakthrough this is technically impossible on paper and doesn't matter how many times I run the simulation using quantum physics it fails everytime! But you did it, you make it look like if it was just a matter of cutting the yellow wire! In your case, I am assuming the yellow wire was a tach output and is not needed. But if the yellow wire is a PWM (pulse-width modulation) wire you will need to connect it to the red wire.

Would you care to elaborate please? I have some fans ripped from a Dell laptop ca 2005 - it looks like I have a 3-wire blk/r & y, 5v 0.44a fan. I'd like to ramp rpm by 50-100%, really see what it can handle (w/o a fire). A 9V get it done you think? 2x 9v in a series perhaps...?
@j.macjordan97795 жыл бұрын
I went ahead and tested it - the yellow wire, if independent from the red were connected to my 9v along with the black, it would just jump a bit. The yellow and red twisted together, the fan worked (opposite blk); just the red alone (opp blk), the fan worked exactly the same... Also, polarity could not be changed. The 9V made it move consistently a much greater volume of air; the 18V did too - it was loud like a hair dryer. The motor would ramp up, hold its speed for about 5-10s, then slowed to a crawl....I could do it repeatedly...buy the motor was producing a lot of heat. In conclusion: yellow wire, nothing; 9V, Good; 18V, Good....then bad.... I thought 3-wire 2-speed fans were not made black, red, & yellow....esp if it's a 5V fan..(?)
@drewhartley64725 жыл бұрын
If the fan is 5V .44amp why are you feeding a higher voltage ? I’m not surprised it’s heating up so would you if you had 1000 volts 0.5amp more or less the equivalent to the power you’re putting into this poor fan 😎

Great video and explanation. It's fine to take a 2 speed fan and wire it into a single speed drive, just like you did, but do not take a single speed fan and wire that into a drive that needs a high and a low. This can and will most likely cause unforeseen problems

the yellow wire acts as either a sensor wire for speed control or probably for heat and is needed at a certain point in a computer or whatever the fan is designed for , just cut the yellow wire and don't exceed the voltage on the fan by 2 volts dc or it might burn out.... this is not for AC fans at all......

@drewhartley64725 жыл бұрын
Anirudh 369 Black May be the positive and the green the negative earth but use a an adjustable low voltage power supply 1amp max output & start up the fan very slowly watching the load of the amp meter if at 3v for a 12v fan & it’s not doing anything..stop & reverse the wires .. this way your not likely to damage the fan. Obviously if it’s AC it doesn’t really matter.. the yellow usually puts out a pulse signal that feeds back to the motherboard controller to tell if the fan is slowing down or speeding up depending upon the temperature of the pc

some companies dont use the standard wiring color code you can try exchanging the yellow and red or the last method would be (which should be a desperate attempt and only if you have nothing to lose) connecting the yellow and red wire together and experiment with the resistor between the connection also check that you are only using a 3 pin to 2 pin conversion and not a 4 pin which is not as easy
