If you have skinny rims for road tyres (tires, if you like) then there isn't enough room for an 8.0mm Schrader bicycle valve hole in the rim, so a 6.0mm Presta valve is required.
@IamUncledeuce3 жыл бұрын
Presta works best on HP tires. A 26" MTB tire is half the pressure. A schrader is not only adequate, it's standard with peripheral gear already in place at gas stations etc... I'm happy that the rim conversion is only the cost of a drill bit.

Schrader valves actually hold higher pressures better than presta. That's why they use them on suspension components. With a lot of people going back to wider rims, maybe it's time that they just drilled larger holes so people have the option of running Schrader.

Nice podcast, thank you! Back in the late 1960s, I had a nice hand pump with a Campy Presta head. Great for my Schwinn high speed clinchers. They were the bomb! Now this current Presta Valve horror---no way could I get my Presta pump to even air up my new tires. I was shocked. Then dug out my old Campy with Presta. I had no idea there was this huge movement away from Presta into the arms of Schraeder. Schraeder valves are bonehead-proof!

All of your videos are very informative and clear! Thanks for having this channel. I have only one suggestion on this wise conversion. When drilling out the valve hole, step the bits instead of drilling the hole out to the correct size with one pass. That will prevent any elongation of the hole, and allow 2 wall rims to self guide the bit

Love it. I have an old 1910 Danish bike with a rotted rim. The only good replacement for 28" x 1 1/2 rims is a modern velocity 29 blunt 35 rim, that only comes with a Presta valve hole. I want to keep the bike original (a Schrader) so this video made clear to me it can be done. Drill bit size info was a big help. Thank you!

To anyone following along at home and wanting to go tubeless schrader I've found making the hole on the tube size a little bigger 11mm or so really helps seat the valve especially if you are DIY using conti valves off old inner tubes.

While we're all bashing Presta let me add my 2 cents... I have an electric pump that fits both, when I screw it onto a Schrader valve, the digital display tells me the tyre pressure, but it doesn't if I screw it on the Presta valve and this is another reason I hate them.

I use an adapter for my Schrader electric pump and today I learned that you actually have to screw the adapter onto the presta valve first and then push the pump onto the adapter. Fun.

@adamh79474 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much for posting this video. I just drilled my rim out successfully. My drill bit kit didn't have a 21/64 but it did have a 5/16. The 21/64 works out to 0.328125. A 5/16 bit works out to 0.3125, so they're pretty close - a difference of 0.4 mm. The 5/16 drills a hole about 0.3 mm larger than the Schrader valve stem. So a 21/64 would give a clearance of 0.7mm larger than the Schrader valve stem. Hopefully my 0.3mm clearance is good enough not to cause any problems. I guess I'll find out!

@@aodh5966 It was pretty straightforward although it freaked me out at first. I just took a normal drillbit, stood over the rim and did it a little bit at a time. It went right through it without any problem and after about five seconds I realized it was not a big deal. Just take it slow at first. A little tip, if you drill from the spoke side instead of the tube side of the rim you won't damage the paint work as much on the rim. Although this might be trickier to drill, will give you a better finish

Something else to try is to put masking tape on the side opposite of the drill. Works when drilling/cutting wood; might work for finished metal too. I haven't tried it on a rim though.

The presta valve core is fairly easy to remove so you can put slime in the tube. There are two threaded sections of the presta valve. The topmost small section is the vavle core. Those threads have two flattened sides so that you can unscrew it with either pliers, an adjustable wrench, or better yet, a wrench of the correct size. Easy peasy. Slime goes in no problem.

No because it will effect the strength of the wheel (the other side of the rim is where it joins)
@chadkline42682 жыл бұрын
I'd use a 5/16th, and then a Dremel stone to smooth the edges. I am planning on doing this, but was a little concerned about the effect on rim strength. The sides of the rim and spokes have the strength of the wheel though, not the area where the valve is. Presta is garbage.

I think the biggest advantage presta has is that it locks in the upright position with the nut. I had a tire that the Schrader valve kept going catawhompus on me and eventually the rim cut into it trashing the core. Valve preference is a highly debatable topic however. Toe-matoh vs To-mato

When I got home and realized it had a Presta valve (I had never herd of one before) I was able to blow it up enough with lung air to install it. Then came trying to find a place to air it up. No dice on a Sunday round here! Went back and bought a new foot pump with both types. Seems odd the tube is a common sized mountain bike. It's in there, and is working for now. I'll ride it till it blows. Went and bought a "normal" tube for next time. The tube with the new fangled presta valve was a heavy duty wide tube, hopefully it will hold up in the bigger hole for a while @ 60 psi
