How To: convert a Ricoh Printer for sublimation printing - Dye Sublimation Supplies

In today's How To, Adam takes us through the best way we have found to flush a Ricoh SG3110DN printer.
This How To has come about because we have had quite a few people get in touch and say they received their Ricoh SG3110DN printers from online sites or office supply stores and they have automatically installed the Ricoh Original OEM inks that arrived with the printer. These inks are unsuitable for Dye Sublimation printing and need to be removed from the system before the SubliJet-R Dye Sublimation inks can be installed.

Dye Sublimation ink is designed to bond to a polymer sub straight when heat is applied, this allows the decoration of polyester and polymer coated garments and items

Hi Adam, Great video by the way. I have a Ricoh printer (same as in the vid). I've put OEM ink in the printer using refillabile carts - can I use the method you discribe to change to sawgrass inks - as I'm told they produce more vibrant colours? So I would be emptying the refillabile carts, filling them with water (distilled) and flushing - a couple of times perhaps? Then putting in the Sawgrass carts and doing an inital setup again - yes?

had a Ricoh Gxe3300n printer given to me bought new but never used however inks were installed and initialized. now I am faced with trying to get it to work. sawgrass won't help unless I spend the hundreds of dollars to buy their genuine inks. Yes you should just be able to pop the sublimation ink straight into a new printer, the only time you'd need to flush it would be if it had had any other ink first

I have a ricoh aficio sg 3110sfnw that I bought for sublimation and my colors aren't coming right. I would love some advice before I throw it through my sliding glass door! I was told I could download the powerdriver v4 from sawgrass, but it doesn't support the sfnw, only the dn model - so now I'm stuck. HELP!!! (Let me also say I'm completely new to sublimation, and don't have ICC profiles etc...I just have the printer and an overwhelming amount of frustration building up)!

Powerdriver is the colour profiling software for the Sawgrass ink, if you don't have Sawgrass inks the profile probably wouldn't work anyway. You would need to get a colour profile from the ink manufacturer or someone who can sort one for you and that would go someway towards solving the problem. If you can't get hold of the ink manufacturer you should try and get some support from the place you bought the printer & inks from, they should really provide you with a colour profile!

Hi Adam. I purchased recently a Sawgrass SG400 but the expensive sublijet inks does not help me to grow my business, so my only option is to downgrade the ink and use a refillable cartridge. So I would like to know if is possible to convert the SG400 to a Ricoh printer, reinstall the original drivers or, in case I still use as a sawgrass printer, if the printer will let me use a refillable cartridges and use as a regular printer, NOT depending of theirs Creative software. it is not nessersary to flush the system twice, take the OEM ink out and simply flush with the water

Hi Rin, if you put sublimation ink into a brand new printer then you don't need to flush it. You'd only need to flush the printer if it has had a different type of ink through it so you won't need to do anything other than install your sublimation ink!

We don't sell the printers with refillable inks so I'm not sure but generally your cartridges should work straight away. Before purchasing anything check with the supplier whose items you are looking at, they should be able to advise

Good video, instead of plain de-ionised water, could RODI (Reverse osmosis de-ionised water) be used? I use this for my marine tanks as it's extra purified and I get this at only 11pence per litre. thank you.

Yes, if you put the sublimation ink in then there shouldn't be a problem. I would recommend the Ricoh as Epsons seem to pick up more blockage issues.

hi. i purchased the printer and i need to remove the dye ink and get the sublimation ink installed, so would i need to get 4 empty cartridges filled with deironised water and flush it out and then get 4 other empty cartridges filled with sublimation ink and do the process again. cant i just empty the cartridges with the deironised ink out and fill it with sublimation ink instead.

Sorry for the late reply, it could be if you are using sublimation inks as your image wouldn't sublimate properly but it would right itself eventually, it would just take longer & therefore cost more in ink use

I'm a little lost on the procedure after the ionized water has been drawn into the printer. How does the water that was sucked in on the start up exit the printer? When the water cartridges are removed and the ink is reinstalled does it push the water out by printing pages?

Hi Azad, we don't get sublimation ink from China I'm afraid I wouldn't be able to suggest anything from there. You can get alternatives to the Sawgrass ink on eBay normally but you wouldn't get the same results

im interested in a RICOH Aficio SG 2100N printer but the listing says "Please read the following statement before please the order. For customer never heard or used icc colour profile or powerdriver, we highly recommend you do some study before place the order. Our ink requires customised colour profile or power drive to print correct colour. We supply the icc colour profile free of charge. We won’t accept the return for the customer don’t how to apply the icc or powerdriver. " this puts me off a little because it seems like the sublimation aspect is not intended for this printer and is an add on you have to build yourself. i want a sublimation printer that just works out the box. what are your thoughts on this?

The SG 2100N doesn't have sublimation ink cartridges compatible with it, so you'd be looking at a refillable or CISS system with that type of printer. All inks require a colour profile to get the colours to match from screen to final product so that would be quite standard. However, I would recommend looking at getting the SG3110DN with either Sawgrass SubliJet inks or Sublisplash, rather than the CISS as they are a much easier, plug in and play system and both inks will usually come with support from the supplier. I think you can use distilled water though we haven't tested that so I couldn't confirm that for sure. The water gets flushed to the waste ink collector unit in the printer

It may be possible i have never converted one, you would need refillable ink cartridges for the printer and some dye sublimation ink, the printer would then need to be flushed with the new ink. as to what results you would get from doing this I would not like to say as I have never personally done it

Hi I know people do use compatible inks with this printer, however i hear a lot of people having issues with inks they have purchased online etc. if it was me id stick ton the saw grass inks, the amount of printing you get out of a set of cartridges is great and the quality is exceptional

ColorWay Hw350C works fine but I recommend pigment ink, for example InkTec. Gel ink is a regular pigment ink with wax but how buy it ? Original is expensive

Hi, pretty much yes! But you'll need to make sure you can get either sublimation cartridges or refillable carts for that model of printer, older models might not work as well either but you can get the Ricoh SG3110DN new for about £61/62 so the printer cost itself is pretty reasonable
