This is a great video, but from what I understand this isn't going to preserve Energy/Statistics data, is that correct?

It won't preserve old data, but I have another video regarding using InfluxDB and Grafana, InfluxDB will retain older data. I am compiling a tips and tricks series, and will look at various settings and some how-tos and will cover saving older data too.

"Data can be queried using standard SQL syntax" is not an advantage of MariaDB; you can do exactly the same thing with SQLite.
