Thank you. From my experience with WD External USB Drives such as 'My Passport' are high-risk storage options, and recovery a 'racket' from Slow-Response and the USB connections incredibly fragile. Even the latest 2020 mfg 'My Passport' USB connector started to fail after 12 insertions. If you are using these drives for archiving data I recommend doing so on at least one extra drive.
@jackoneil39332 жыл бұрын
@Christian Habermann I believe a much better option is to buy a standard 2.5" laptop or full sized harddrive and place it in a third party case, so you can still access the drive if the interface fails, and your data is not subject to firmware based WD data formatting and compression. I also found a 'CaseCrown 2.5" Mobile External Hard Drive Case', and secured the drive and cable internally so the drive has some shock protection and there is less strain on the drive and cable connection

I don't know why WD and Toshiba solder the bridge on the drive. If the bridge dies, you have to do humongous work to make it working again. The Seagates just have a PCB that's simply plugged on the SATA connector. Anyways, interesting video! :)

great video! I have a sluggish 4TB wd-elements, reporting no SMART errors, but extreeemly slow, so after googling, I ordered a new PCB from China, also a cheap heat gun (the 858D+) and after few tries desoldering and resoldering chips on an old 40G PATA drive, having it still work fine, I gave it a try on migrating the chip from the old PCB to the new one. It almost went well, except... the drive with the new PCB now clicks and does not get recognized. I was thinking of moving the chip back... than again, maybe it would be too much stress for the chip if I do it on my own again. :/ Any hints would be highly appreciated.

Hi there. I'm for Brazil and was searching for references about rx/tx capacitors from Hdd. I have a ps4 that's damage the sata conector. The capacitors from the 3 first (left to right) was taken off board. How they are smd, I'd make the same that you do in the "convert wd passport to sata" video. Cut a board with the capacitors and solder in the liners that are remade. The problem is that voltage is passing to high, so the ps4 don't recognize the hdd. The only capacitor that is still on the board pass 0.05, all the others are passing ~0.25. I searched but not discovered the value of the capacitors. I think that is 104 (100nF) or 101(100pf). Can you help me, please?

Thanks a lot for your videos !
@Agret5 жыл бұрын
The chip he showed on the board performs hardware level encryption and is active even if the user has not enabled a password. The user password thing is a software level encryption for extra data security that the user can install.

Hi Erkin, or any other one who can guide/help me. I'm desperate. I have a 4TB My Passport. The part number board is 2060-800041-003 REV P1. The data was accessible but the USB port of the board is damaged, if i do pressure between the cable & the board the drive wakes up & shows me data, but is impossible to get the drive working this way to get the -almost- 4tb of data rescued, the needed pressure is too much, i was afraid to damage it for ever. I've tried to re-sold the USB port with no luck, so i've decided to solder wires to transform the drive from USB to SATA. I knew that the data pads for redirect to the sata connector were the E71, E72, E73, & E75. In the process i've lifted out the E71 & E72 pads 'cause the wires were too thick and i've moved them accidentally. I'm desperate cause i don't see any metal in those circles in which re-solder new pads or little coppers to replace the old ones, and i suspect that those pads are not the real board conectors, just plain pads to sold rescue or analysis wires there, but obviously i'm no sure at all. I would like to know if the real conectors are the very little rings to wich those pads were connected. Thx a lot to everyone's time for read me.

In passport drives there is 2 types of protection, password protection that could be set up by owner for extra security, and a mandatory hardware encryption forced by JMS or Inition or other. Password to lock the drive has nothing to do with hardware encryption of the device
