Yeah mine started doing the click of death, so I opened it expecting to find a sata drive hoping it was just the usb converter that failed, so now I know to research any external drive before buying so I'm not stuck with crap like this again.
@markdawson254 жыл бұрын
Thanks for sharing... saved me from destroying mine. Guess I'll return it and do more research next time before I actually buy the drive. It's probably a great external drive, but I need one to go inside a SFF desktop turned portable server.
@yueibm4 жыл бұрын
Same with the 2.5" WD Elements I got. Cheaper for them to skip making an adapter if there's enough volume in the portable drives.
@rufohg4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, same experience with WD.... Nevertheless, Seagate, AFAIK still makes them in the 'traditional' way (I bought one SG back in May 2020 and it was SATA, but not the WD I bought a month ago)
@Greg749485 ай бұрын
I wouldn't recommend buying external hard drives which don't have a standard SATA connector inside because some USB 3.0 controllers can fail at random moments and if a disk has just a USB connector soldered into the logic board, you won't be able to plug it directly to a SATA port to recover your data. On a side note: I can easily guess why Toshiba changed that interface. They just wanted to make their external HDDs impossible to use as internal hard drives and to force people to buy internal drives which are often more expensive than their USB versions. It's all about making more money,as always.

I found the disk drive is similar as PC L200. If you can get donor circuit board and transfer the BIOS, you pretty much can change this into usual SATA connector. Only applicable if you have a broken PC L200 drive with working board and you're savvy enough to transfer BIOS from one board to another

Guys. quick question. I am plannig to buy this for my backup - However i notice some people said that if the connector is ruined, then u r screwed. My quetions as follow: 1. how often is the USB connection fail in practice? 2. its almost 2 yrs since the video, wondering if your drive still running ok? 3. Isnt it with less 1 moving part be meaning with less 1 failure point to the device? 4.. looking back at this, do you still recommend the Toshiba Canvio?

Oof... I have it and I use it all the time connecting and disconnecting... I should maybe leave it connected and glue it..

The quick answer is that having a SATA interface greatly increases the chance of recovering data at home, including purely software failures.

@danielmcmaster13924 жыл бұрын
You can put a normal sata connection on, I just watched a guy do it with a wd drive, you just have to know obviously which connection is which and also if the drive has an encryption chip or apparently on a rare occasion the encryption is inside the main controller chip, I wouldn't try it unless either you are extremely skilled in such things or you really don't care if the drive survives. The way the guy I seen do it he disconnected the encryption just by pulling the chips pins out of the board and he ended up with the sata fixed diagonally across the board but he was only interested in data recovery. I'm sure it could be done a lot better if you had the time and the necessary diagrams and equipment. I'm trying to find it because I did the same thing abd I even asked the shop owner if there was a sata connection inside and he said yeah yeah of course, last dollar he sees from me!

At least on the bright side these drives barely ever saturates the entire bandwidth of usb 3.1 or later, so there shouldn't be much to gain from using one through SATA other than the obvious convenience of installing one as an internal drive of course.
@GacMan472 жыл бұрын
I almost opened mine. I was looking around to see if there's an adapter for this to convert it to sata. So far no luck. Mostly stuff to make hard drives external and not the reverse.

Hey, what should I do if my hard drive dies and has no SATA bridge?
@neatwheat Жыл бұрын
Might be bad luck, but I have 2 Toshiba drives and with both I experienced problems after just a couple of years in use while my other 4 or 5 external drives from other brands performed way longer. Maybe fusing the USB-plug with the drive was not such a bright idea. I just saw this guy here at "Mery Mind Meri Technology" on KZbin repairing such a plug. But sothering on a new plug seems exessive.

Which HDD would you suggest me to buy? I need an external reliable 2tb hdd for storing pictures and videos. I'm thinking on a HGST Touro mobile, a Toshiba Canvio and a WD my Elements. What do you think about them? What about their reliability in long term usage? Thanks for your answers. :)
@TaoMStudio4 жыл бұрын
@Diuco Hi, failure rate is impossible to tell on a single drive. I have used all 3 brands in the past as you mentioned. But my go to hard drives will be WD(all my internal HDDs and server HDDs are WD). And also, WD bought HGST back in 2012.
@diuco174 жыл бұрын
@@TaoMStudio Thanks. And wich one would you choose (price doesn't matter) between a G-drive Mobile and the Toshiba Canvio Premium? The G-drive is really a HGST, so it should be very reliable, but I've also heard a lot of good things about the Toshiba (which is also pretty reliable)... Quality seems to be good in both, but the G-drive runs at 7200 rpm (5400 rpm for the Toshiba). Basically, which manufacturer makes the best reliable, external 2.5 inch HDD in your opinion between Toshiba and G-drive?
@TaoMStudio4 жыл бұрын
@ Diuco In my opinion, G-drives are glorified WD drive(7200rpm as you mentioned), but works well. I personally don't use G-drives, but few of my friends use them, and they are happy with it. I personally would go with G-drive for better performance.

Well since mine is the same like the one Tao show here, what is the solution to get the data back?? Any advice is appreciated please? Thanks

standard 1tb and 2tb hard drives are 9.5 milimeters thin, or 9mm, or 7mm. 3TB and 4TB are 12.5mm or 15mm. care about the connector i have a toshiba laptop the SSD is standard 2.5" but not sata connector, it's a flexible specific toshiba cable. so 3 or 4 TB HDD will be too big you can't fit in the computer. choose any 2TB hdd.

If you want a custom drive, buy a SATA put it in an enclosure. What a stupid guy, you buy an external drive and you expect SATA ports, and then you clearly have no idea of ports, it's simple, data comes as data, the you translate it into a format. It's ok to have sata to USB but if you can send directly to USB to save some cost, sure, I don't see a problem.
