Hi there! Great video. I’m from Hawaii and appreciate the love and inspired recipes. You should have made lomi lomi salmon, it’s so good. And with the poi, it’s an explosion of flavor in your mouth. By the way, if you want your poi to taste sweeter, add sugar, it taste just like dessert, but when mixed with the salmon and kalua pig, sooooo good! ✨☺️✨

Maybe next time when making your Kalua pig, try to find Hawaiian salt, find pork butt with some fat. Go ahead and score the the pork butt and salt it and rub the liquid smoke. Then wrap it in banana leaf. Throw it in the slow cooker for 8hrs. Then shred it up

Quang, born and raised in Hawaii and you don't need the Ti leaves to make laulau. Of course you need Luau leaves, meat, and fish. Wrap it up in the luau leaves an wrap that in foil instead of the Ti leaves. You have yourself a LAULAU!!!! Can't wait to see the finish product when you make it. 😊😊😊

hey Quang, know it's your take, but some even better taste tips: add chicken broth (at least 2 cans in place of water) and add more packages of glass noodles, add carmelized (or add a little shoyu/mirin/sugar) sauce that you cooked the spam in on top of the rice before laying the SPAM down (so it does not taste dry) and wrapping with nori, i'll say to cut down on the liquid smoke (too much hickory smoke) to one teaspoon and also shred the pork ( we rub the exterior of the pork butt with Hawaiian sea salt, but Kosher salt is a good substitute before you cook it) while still in the pot so that you can then stir it around in the remaining juices so that the meat is very moist and not dry, and finally, locals in Hawaii like me ONLY use BEST Foods mayonnaise (nothing else) and add finely cut chopped onions with its juices and mix it with the the macaroni...I use garlic salt (not regular salt). I just use a crock pot to cook the pork butt to cook for 4 hours or 8 hours depending on the cooking level speed (fast or slow). Oh, and a very good substitute for taro leaves to make lau lau are fresh bunch of spinach leaves...I'd say for the size of your pork butt you used, put in 4 bunches of fresh spinach

I am Hawaiian and eat Kalua Pig all the time. I have used your method before and it tastes a little different than the traditional way but similar enough where it still tastes delicious. Spam Musubi is by the far the best food because you can also just wrap it in saran wrap and bring it to somewhere easily.

From someone born and raised on Hawaii, you didn’t do too bad for what you had. Your chicken long rice and Mac salad was on point though. If you added soy sauce to the spam musbi, while you was cooking it, it would’ve been on point. All you needed was Hawaiian salt for that pork. It gives you an earthy taste to it. All in all, you did a great job Quang! Keep it up

I’m from Kauai born and raised and that Kalua pork is legit. Next time add taro leaves or spinach for slow cooked lau lau. You can use foil instead of ti leaves if you wanted to make lau lau the hard way, we don’t eat the ti leaves it’s just to wrap and hold them like a plate lol.

Banana leaves will substitute for ti leaves if using taro leaves as the inner wrapper very durable, if you use them you may have to wrap the Lau-Lau in foil to seal, as the steaming take 6-8 hours.

You should totally make the Tongan Dish called Lu Sipi too....its basically mutton pieces, onion and coconut cream wrapped in taro leaves and baked in oven for about an hour and a half to two hours....

You should specify that this is "Modern Hawaiian food". Second, nobody uses SUSHI rice when making musubis. SUSHI rice is for SUSHI..Also it is not Kalua Roast. It is called KALUA PIG and Kalua stands for "to cook underground"....so what you made is KALUA STYLE pork. Chicken long rice also is not "HAWAIIAN"...The only things on this plate that is actually Hawaiian is Kalua pig and poi. Everything else is modern LOCAL HAWAIIAN food, fused from other cultures mainly Japanese. I'm getting tired of the ignorance people have about the Hawaiian culture. Especially when they call Ham and Pineapple pizza..."Hawaiian" Nobody in Hawaii eats that garbage, only haoles and a Canadian is the one who created it. You want REAL Hawaiian food? Where is the Lau Lau? where is poke? wtf?

You can make Lau Lau with foil instead of ti leaves. We don’t eat ti leaves. It’s just to hold the taro leaves together while it cooks

The instant pot is a must buy, but I have found I need to create my own time chart for cooking different items. Once you know how long to cook everything it's the best tool in the kitchen since the knife.

Hey Quang. Tip for cooking meat in the pressure cooker(instant pot is just a brand name). Cut larger chunks into equal pieces. One hour and ten mins was plenty of time, the meat was just too dense.

Most locals cook the pork until the banana leaves are soft so you can eat them with the pork wrapped underneath. It will taste like greens and pork so good.
