I absolutely LOVE the way you have done this site! I like the music, the way you present the recipes and the focus on the way to prepare them. On so many you tube sites, the personalities of the presenters are distractions rather than enhancements. It is so nice on this one seeing and hearing your brother also. Thank you! Great job! Thanks for your "how to demo for Lau lau". I've seen quite a few recipes on youtube and I keep wondering why that one item that I'm used to seeing never gets included, and that item is the salt salmon. I realize that there are many options as far as ingredients are concerned, but I got so used to seeing the salt salmon included way back in the day in old Haleiwa. I accompanied my mom and some friends in the early 50s when they were preparing to make lau lau. I was only about 7 years old at the time but distinctly remember the ingredients. The ingredients were 1 each large cube of pork, beef, butter fish, salt salmon and a sprinkling of hawaiian salt then wrapped in taro leaves, and finally in ti leaves. The different ways for making Lau lau that I've seen are all good. I was just curious why the salt salmon was never included in the recipes, guess I'm an old soul. God bless. Mahalo and aloha.

It could be old school. I havent had much laulaus with salted salmon. It could be because salmon is expensive in Hawaii since salmons need to be imported? Just speculation 😉

I love Lau Lau and your recipe is a great adaptation. But I have heard that Butterfish/Escolar has been banned in some countries including Japan as it may cause gastrointestinal problems and even death in individuals that are sensitive to its oily content. Maybe a shout out to this possibility should be included along with an alternative substitute. 🙏🏼

Hello. Thank you for sharing Im filipino, and we have this dish called "Laing", its taro lvs, w/ Pork, Shrimp, Shrimp paste and cooked with coconut milk. Question, have you tried using coconut milk, boil the laulau for hours with cocinut milk, till soft and tender, instead of steaming it? You think it will work? Thank you. 👍
@OnoHawaiianRecipes
@OnoHawaiianRecipes 3 жыл бұрын
Ohhh Laing sounds really good! I'm gonna check out that recipe. I think boiling it in coconut milk will work as long as the leaves are cooked in it for longer than an hour. It's quite similar to the squid luau recipe.
@TruthHurts01

@@OnoHawaiianRecipes traditionally we cook "laing" for 4 hrs, slow cook, Yes, I just checked the squid lauau, and I think its almost similar. Sometimes I do a little experiment myself on this already wonderful dishes specially with the same base ie taro lvs, pork seafood. Thanks for your reply👍☺

They are options for those who don't have access to kalo leaves. You could simply have the spinach cook along with the meat wrapped in foil. Collard greens are bitter but few are okay with it.
