That steak would be so much better after cooking *one more minute in a frying pan* with some oil. If you must cook a steak in an oven, don't do it at 400°. Cook it low to cook evenly and dry out the surface, as in the reverse-sear technique (170-250°F, depending on your patience and how thick and wet your steak is). Finish by broiling each side at the highest your oven can do. Air fryers can't always broil, but convection ovens and air fryers are good for high-heat roasting since they blow away the steam coming off the meat so the steak will brown faster and more evenly. So cook low for evenness and to prepare the meat for a final quick blast of heat to brown the exterior without overcooking the meat.

I’m sorry, but that looks terrible. For something that’s really not that hard to cook, I don’t see a need to cut corners and compromise on flavor. My go to method now is reverse broil. I cook it in the oven on low (200) until the inside reaches 110 degrees and then broil it a few inches from the broiler at 500-550 flipping it every 30 seconds until it reaches 125 inside. Let it rest 10 mins for medium rare. The crust that you develop is more even than searing in a pan and very little grey band.

I think you should in this case use a cold steak, not frozen but very cold, and only put it in after the air fryer had at least some 10 mins at max temperature to warm up, and then proceed as the video.. you can still get some browning and some crust, but it'll be dryer, like dehydrated dry on some corners and tips, the insides will be perfect medium rare tho

Well, that looks... edible. here's how I would cook a steak in a air fryer, but only in a emergency situation: first I would cook it at the lowest temperature setting until it's close to rare internally. Then I would remove it from the basket, while cranking up the air fryer temperature to the max until it's insanely hot. Cooking for a few minutes hoping I could get the best browning possible. That should give a decent result. Kinda like reverse searing but with an air fryer instead.
