When you set up your camera, you should make sure that you're mostly in frame rather than only being in the bottom half and directly in the middle of the frame. You should think of the frame as a drawing where there should be good visual composition haha. It always looks like you're sitting in a hole.

Thank you for addressing the "Poor Man's Copyright." That was suggested to me a few years ago but I never did it. My team and I have recently been considering copy righting our work and although I forgot about The Poor Man's Copyright it's something that could have come up. And I wasn't properly aware of how ineffective it was.
@MyMangakaLIFE6 жыл бұрын
Yeah, you would have to seek legal counseling to better understand your options, but according to the U.S. Copyright Office's FAQ's the "Poor Man's Copyright" wouldn't stand up in court. Items sent in for copyright must be reviewed by a lawyer appointed by the U.S. Copyright Office to make sure it isn't stolen material, etc. before your application is approved. +Hollow Streets

@MyMangakaLIFE8 жыл бұрын
Phrases that identify a business (i.e. "I'm lovin' it" or "Just Do It") are only protected by filing a trademark. A copyright protects literature, visual arts music, fashion, architecture, and a few other forms of intellectual property. You can not trademark a bible verse or psalm. That is public property and no one can claim it as their own creation. But I recommend you speak to a lawyer because it seems you have a small business going on and you need to be told how to protect your intellectual property and t-shirt designs :) I wish you good luck! +Milo Rodriguez

You will not be able to submit a printed and bound copy of your book. Thank you for making this video it was really helpful! I still have a question though. What if you were to copyright a character before it becomes a story? How would that work out? Or let's just say only a character that might not even be a story. I am having trouble understanding how copyright would work with drawings/art. I just have been reading about original characters and it just made me wonder when you mentioned fashion.
@MyMangakaLIFE8 жыл бұрын
As mentioned in this video, you would simply send in your artwork using the form meant for art work. I also mentioned you could send in your entire portfolio (I said something like "John doe's portfolio- 2009-2015"... something like that LOL). You could send in just one character but as stated in this video, whether you send in 1 drawing or 100 drawings, the copyright price remains the same.

I'm super thankfull for all the advice you give! Seriously help's me to just keep working on my story with a bit less anxiety. I've been curious for awiall if you have to get a new copyright every time you finish drawing a volume? Or do you send in your entire story script with the character designs, and after that is copyrighted your free to draw out the story? Hope that makes sence.
@FreedWulf9 жыл бұрын
I have two questions: 1: What about a character that I commissioned to be designed ? I know it belongs to me as I paid to have it designed, but how would that work on the application? Since it was not all my original idea, and I had an artist render it for me, would it still be my idea, or would I need to credit them in the process? 2: what about people who turn Novels into Manga/comics or vise-versa? I'm sure they would have to get permission for the copyright to the story and the characters, but would how they depict it out be an original work that they could claim as their own and in that sense make money off of it? (I ask this because I have a book series that was also made into a manga years later down the road, after the book series was complete)
@MyMangakaLIFE9 жыл бұрын
+FreedWulf All very good questions! 1.) If I'm not mistaken, the application may have a section asking you if this was art you hired someone else to create. You may need to include their name but please don't quote me because I am not a lawyer and can not rightfully give you legal advice.This may be something you should speak to a lawyer about or call the Copyright office or LegalZoom.com customer service for more information. 2.) Absolutely correct. You'll need to pay a large fee for the copyrights and license to turn someone else's publication into a movie or turn a film into a novel or graphic novel. But this may not be up to you and may be up to the publishers. This all changes from case to case.

Do you have to copyright each novel you write, or are they already under copyright protection from copyrighting the initial in a series? Going off of that thought, let's say I was trying to generate buzz and support for my first graphic novel, and I was releasing images and KZbin videos during the process, would all that stuff be exposed and vulnerable to theft until I copyrighted the final product? I put these questions together because I thought they might be related. Thanks!

Can you copyright an entire book series in one go? I already know many I have planned and the titles, but I only have the first two books fully written out, I was just wondering if there was a way to go ahead and copyright the series instead of each individual book. Now let's say you're trying to profit from a work you've made on something like say, amazon, (Such as myself) where you need to own the copyright in order to collect revenue, could I do so immediately after filing for copyright, or do I need to wait until my copyright is processed over the 8 month period?

I have some characters I made back in the 90s when I was in high school. One of the characters clothing is similar to Chun-Li. If I change her fighting outfit, regardless of how she looks, could I get away with this character without having Capcom tear me a new butt?
@MyMangakaLIFE7 жыл бұрын
That's a risk. Many people have been sued by Disney and such because the origins of characters were too obvious. You'll need to be careful and more original so your fans (and Capcom) won't know what inspired you. +Mike T.

Also do you know, if I submit my work to publishers before I receive my copyright back am I still protected?

I was wondering about something and this may sound extremely dumb. But I was wanting to know if you can still sell your work while it's in the process of being copyrighted and if so how do you put the copyright watermark on there. Do you just put the watermark along with your name and date, or do you have to wait for the papers to come in saying your work has been copyrighted. I hope what I just said isn't too confusing lol.

Konichuwa lizbeth! I too am an American mangaka (unpublished (officially) but in process). I have a few wondering questions that didn't seem to be covered in this video. I am an artist that does not write down my stories in novel format before I draw my manga, I do it through memory ( and am quite successful at it). I do still do drafts however. My question is, is do you have to have the manga complete to send in for copy rights? The reason why I am confused is because there are still ongoing manga such as naruto/boruto, one piece, bleach, etc that seem to go on forever, so if you were to copyright the complete series you technically couldn't? Anyways would love to hear back from you! Doing research on my own is tedious when that's really the only question I have! :) btw, I just found your page last night and I must say I am intrigued! Love the videos I've watched so far
@MyMangakaLIFE9 жыл бұрын
Hello dear ♡ these are great questions :) I think I mentioned this in this video by saying "send your entire story in for copyrighting", as in m, "completed works". You could send it in chapters at a time, but you'll spend more money ^__^;; Stories that are VERY long propane send in a few volumes worth of writing to be copyrighted at a time. After I sent in my writting, I sent in each volume to copyright the drawings and dialogue in my Manga. Also, when I was still a kid I kept all my stories in my mind too (with just a few little drafts in sketch books), but once you're an adult and want to submit to publishers, your story will need to be completely written down (not to mention, it helps you keep track of the tiny details when you work on a long story) Good luck! I hope my other videos will be helpful to you, too ♡

Quick question! Out of curiosity, in my comic, my character mentions a couple band names (Miles Davis, The Red Hot Chili Peppers) Do you know if that would that become a problem in the application process? Like, would I have to rewrite the band names to sound similar to them?
@MyMangakaLIFE9 жыл бұрын
+Jessica Howard Unfortunately, in this country, mentioning celeb names, brand names etc. can be cause for a lawsuit and many times companies need to pay a fee to use the brand names or the brands need to pay a fee to have their product mentioned or featured in movies, TV shows and publications. That's why most ppl go out of their way to create alternate names for things like Pepsi etc. to avoid any problems/copyright infringement. If you're making money off of your publication and you mention someone's name , company, brand, product, or intellectual property (i.e. mentioning Disney and Mickey Mouse) the copyright holders and trademark holders are entitled to compensation (some of the money you earn with your product, program, publication etc. mentioning their name, product etc. So, please be careful, dear. This is still something you can speak to your publisher about, but they may ask you to change that in your scripts. Good luck!

Hiya, this was very helpful for me so thank you! I do a question. I am starting an adult colouring book, my first one actually. I have a great idea in mind and I've already drafted the first two pages of my colouring book. When is the best time to copyright my drawings? I am researching some publishers at the moment and emailing them copies of my first two pages to give them an idea of my project to see if any of them like my style and would consider publishing my book. Do my two first drawings I have recently done need to copyrighted already before I even sent them to all these publishers or will they mind that there just copies from my original draft? From watching your video I am getting the idea that I should waiting until the project or adult colouring book in my sense should be completed first then I can copyright all at once? I have loads of drawings as a self taught illustrator trying to make it on my own by designing adult colouring books for the first time and eventually selling them. I'm not quite sure if I should copyright them all though? I'm sorry about the long comment I am just trying to get to grips with it all still lol. Hi! Thank u so much for the info, I definitely subscribed ^^ But I have a few doubts that I can't find any answers anywhere... It's that I have a lot of Original Characters (like 400) that I will use in the same series, but I'm still not sure if I can Copyright them all together (as your portfolio example), or if I have to do it one by one since they're characters. I also would like to know if it's possible to Copyright my Original Characters as 3D models too, with the same portfolio method. And the last one... Can I Copyright the name of my series and story and characters all together, or do I need to Copyright the series name, then the story, and then the characters? Sorry for disturbing, just want to make sure how to do things right... Thanks 😁👍
