How deep would you recommend I disc for clover ?

If starting a new plot and you are adding lime I would always disc about 6 inches or so

I enjoy your videos on food plots as im looking to build my first food plot this year. I hear so many ppl say apply lime to fix your pH but lime is the fix only on one side of the pH scale, which is if you have a low pH (below 7). If you have a pH above 7 lime is not the answer to correct that pH. No one is talking about that side of the pH scale in the food plot community. How to bring your high pH down, should be a good topic to cover.

Because most ph is low. If you are way above 7 then add sulfur and continue adding fertilizer. Granular fertilize automatically lowers ph because of the salts and filers

How well does the lime works if you can’t disk it ? ( too many stumps ) Do you have too apply more lime then ? Do you fertilize at the same time you add lime ?

It will work but will take much longer. It also won’t be at the roots level so won’t be as effective and you could get run off. Only fertilize at planting

@@Whitetailobsessionoutdoors thanks for your reply 🙏🏼. Got my soil sample back beginning off this month and i put 600 lb off lime down on 5000 sf in the middle off the woods last week. Property is in South Haven, Mi and the soil it’s very sandy and has a lot off roots. It will be my first plot. Iff it works, i will cut more tree’s next year and make a bigger plot. Not essy because i leave 1900 miles away and I’m limited too equipment.

So it would be a good idea to do a soil sample the first few years when setting up a new food plot, just to see where you are at, and then maybe every other year, if you are using the buckwheat or other green cover crop to help ?

I would do a soil sample each year no matter what. It’s a very cheap investment.

This may work for you and others. But discing/tilling is unequivocally detrimental to soil health. It decreases organic matter and kills off essential microbes, Furthermore, it decrease soil ability to maintain moisture and increases chance of erosion. Also, it brings up millions of weed seeds.

This is completely false. Erosion yes can happen. That’s why is important to keep something green and growing as long as possible. Killing microbes very possible but so does spraying chemicals 3 times a year. Decreases organic matter? This is also false. I’ve been discing for 20 years. Discing in green material actually increases organic matter. I have soil samples to prove it. What’s better? Trying to build soil on top of soil and spraying what you planted 3 times a year? I don’t have 100 years to build soil on top of soil. No till has a place especially in very rocky situations but for most food plotters discing is perfectly fine. This isn’t production ag. It’s a food plot that a critter eats…

So it’s best to work to the soil by discing or tilling the lime and buckwheat or rye?
@Whitetailobsessionoutdoors
@Whitetailobsessionoutdoors 2 жыл бұрын
That’s what I do and works great and has worked for farmers well before our time. Planting annuals yes. Buckwheat in spring and summer wheat or rye in the fall

I’ve got a food plot in the woods that gets almost no sun. All the seeds I’ve been looking at are mostly ryegrass so I was wondering if there’s a specific seed that would perform well and attract lots of deer
@Whitetailobsessionoutdoors
@Whitetailobsessionoutdoors 2 жыл бұрын
Nothing will grow without sun. Doesn’t matter what the bag of seed says. If you don’t have sun you need to open up the canopy to allow more in. If not you’ll be fighting a loosing battle
