How to Correct Uneven Hand Saw Set

Very helpful video. When I resharpen my saws my first step is to joint the teeth from toe to heel on the top and both sides. I’m not saying that is correct procedure but that is the way I was taught. What are your thoughts?

@@nickmastro9287 For me i only joint the top of the teeth if i noticed they're not in the same alignment, which if even sharpening is achieved is not that often for me in regards to new saws. I used to joint the top of the saw teeth when i first started to assist me with even sharpening, but i find myself doing that far less now. In terms of jointing the sides of the teeth that isn't something i do personally and to me seems counter productive to remove set just to add it back. (Maybe on a newly acquired vintage saw it could be useful when restoring). This could make a good video to get everyone's opinions (maybe this coming week if i get it done)

Good video! I have big big Roubo style frame saw. It shifts to one side , except for tension the blade, sharpen it and setting it, what can I do more to correct it ? Over setting one side, body positioning. Ripping board 5 cm thick, 20 cm wide 150 cm long is hard task 😅

Is that the modern Spear & Jackson saw? Do they use folded backs?

@@B_COOPER Yes, it is a modern spear and Jackson saw (SJ-5410Y) and they don't state if its folded or not, but it does look like is a folded brass back. The only thing i really changed on this one was reprofiling the handle.

I notice that when you are doing these tests you rip cut. Is your saw filed for rip or cross cut and does it make a difference?

@@eddienew2044Great question. Sorry i didn't make it clearer between Cross cut and rip saws. Yes, this saw is a rip cut. You can go with the grain using a cross cut for this test it will cut slower, but i would test a cross cut making cross cut tests as it will give you the best results.
