Fun redstone trick: If you lock a villager's trades so they only accept one kind of item, you can use skulk sensors to detect when they offer a trade. This means you can have a villager activate a redstone contraption like a gate or door if you show them a specific item!

@@dudieboy Nice! I would have figured you for a historian or architect. As for the length of that video: I mean it's not like you were just showing different ideas for furnitute but a pretty complex structure and gave in-depth explanations on the thought processes that lead to those exact designs all while keeping it entertaining. The length of that video is perfectly fine given the content. But I won't be building a gatehouse in the near future as I was merely using your wall designs for my city walls and not for a castle. So instead of a gatehouse I placed 3 different city gates with twin towers and varying defensive measures depending on the probability of an enemy attack with the main gates having the strongest defenses and the gate leading to my base the weakest. But I did notice some similarities which is the main reason I also watched this video. What I'd be interested in personally would be your concept of medieval barracks. I built some recently but what I was able to come up with pretty much resembles the baracks from Age Of Empires II, haha. So I'd love to compare my solution to yours.

6:30 A common misconception about the use of scalding liquids for the use of defending g a medieval castle is that people think that the defenders would have poured scalding oil but oil was more of a luxury substance back then so the chance that they would have actually poured oil on attackers would have been extremely slim, if not downright none. They would instead as Dudieboy has said, poured scalding water or hot sand.

Absolutely love that all the pieces of your castle builds so far have been in manageable sizes, even the really grand structures like this gatehouse! I watch a lot of Minecraft videos, but tend to play more Vintage Story, where building really large structures is much more difficult and time-consuming. Thanks to this series, I'm actually going to try and tackle a modest keep structure styled after your Norman Castle Keep video, and might just plan for a gatehouse once gathering materials isn't so much of an issue. All the little historical details you work in are a real treat. Thank you for including proper plumbing and a thought-out dungeon!

26:50 If you're using wooden fences, you can use fence gates in the corners to prevent those connections. Additionally, instead of using 2 layers of cobblestone blocks you can use 2 layers of stairs (one normal and one upside down) to prevent the middle 5 fence posts from connecting. You used a similar trick for the murder holes with the slabs

Perfect, I love it! One thing though, real simple Redstone idea here, but try replacing the murder hole wall blocks with dispensers, load them with ammo of choice, I recommend lingering potions of instant damage tier II, combined with tipped arrows of the same. Then, simply tie all the dispensers together with a line of Redstone dust, and add a lever to activate them all at once. Simple, but effective, and that way intruders can’t fire back through the space in the murder hole wall blocks. And I suppose if you wanted to, you could replace all the arrow slit stairs, (and, if desired, the blocks above and to the sides of the middle one), with dispensers as well, loaded with ammo of choice, and a lever. At best, that would be between 2 to 5 projectiles for every one guardsman. A great increase to efficiency. Other things would be to replace the water in the moat with either lava or cacti, or to simple replace the bottom layer of the moat with magma blocks, to pull intruders who try to swim across to their watery and ultimately very hot demise. Plus, you could try to use spruce trapdoors instead of oak for the ends of the bunk beds, I find it has a nicer, more sturdy look to it. Oh, and one last thing, when you go to tie it all together, that Norman Keep needs an aquarium. Not sure why the Normans would have one, but hey, like you said, we have Netherite. Those are just my thoughts. Enjoy your upcoming build. Can’t wait to see it! Rockatoa, Brickticks out!

I'm really glad there is someone out there/here making actual reality inspired minecraft walls and castles and not fantasy ones. Absurd majority of "castle" guides are overstylicized disney castle builds not reflecting proper medieval fortifications at all. Concerning nitpicks I have towards Minecraft, I really wish there was something like carpet you could just put on walls to simulate the white look of castles from Central Europe caused by plaster. atm making 3m (or 3 blocks) wide wall of the defended side of palace/tower that just looks like cobblestone or stonebrick from both sides just doesn't feel right, so what ends up happening is that 2 out of the 3 blocks have to be replaced with concrete or terracota XD

The more videos in this series you upload, the more I regret not waiting until the full series is done and then start building my castle. What a magnificent gatehouse! Sturdy, defendable, looking amazing and overall very practical! I tried designing my own in a similar way, but it ended up a lot bigger than yours, almost unreasonably so. But what I am sorta proud of is functional lava dispensers, to simulate boiling water. I also designed my own murder holes (a trapdoor with an iron bar on it to prevent falling down) and built decorative winces for the portcullises. I haven't finished the rest of it yet, but my drawbridge will be a more "classic" one, with a barbican at the front. I guess I should also add big wooden gates on the inner side, like you did.

Awesome video, and a very well-done gatehouse! So happy to see you back. I have zero notes on the build itself, but I do have just a few points on history. (And as I'm sure you'll get plenty of other people in the comments making similar observations, I shall try to make my own as brief as I can.) (My first thing was gonna be on the Viking Age, but I scrolled down and saw someone beat me to it, so I won't beat a dead longship lol) First thing: As to the torture, I would like to know what sources you used for that info, because I know that a lot of the facts about Medieval torture were embellished by 18th and 19th-century scholars. As a result, it's difficult to get at the actual methods and mindset of the time--which, unsurprisingly, is not something that a whole lot of people go in for study on, given how incredibly dark and depressing it is. Second thing: I really like the moat flushing out the garderobe. It's a small thing, but it's really neat, and very plausible! That's pretty much it; I hope this didn't come across as nitpicking, because I really enjoy your content and like to hear what you have to say. I use your builds as inspiration all the time, so I can't wait to see the next one where you tie all the castle bits together!

Thanks for the comments! Yes, torture history is a bit murky and the idea of shackling the prisoners below the drawbridge is more my idea based on some tour videos I’ve watched where an overflow of prisoners were chained up in weird places sometimes, like hallways and kitchens. The rack and the effectiveness of barred windows in prisons are from books I’ve read, and even predate the Middle Ages.

there could be overhanging blocks or parts off a roof to towers from where you can drop sand and anvils on enemies and potentially dripstone but a bit more complex dropping spash potions seems more feasible than stalagtites a room that could be featured would be the elder guardian room which holds an elder guardian and possibly a way for it to shoot upwards while being safe, with an elder guardian the stone bricks / deepslate / blackstone / endstone could handle well, bonus if it is made of obsidian the elder guardian room could also hold a portcullis return slot where an anvil portcullis can be dropped down when the defenders want it open again
