In this video, we read your comments and discover how to CORRECTLY use Pattern Mutator for sampling. Because we might have been doing it wrong! 😅 Then we get theoretical and discuss whether a certain type of plugin exists? And if it doesn't, why not? 🤷🏼‍♂️

Maybe try putting that whole set up @ 4:21 inside another Combinator, then see if it lets you set the range of notes for the player..

I’m extremely new to reason, but based off what I’m seeing here you could use the pattern mutator or without entering in the steps if you put the pattern mutator on a track with the midi out. Then add to the chain and instrument rack the transposes the out of range notes back down to the appropriate range. Then after that, put dr octoloop. It’s a bit obtuse, but based off what I’m seeing here I do think it would work
@matthewstuartnz
@matthewstuartnz 3 жыл бұрын
Yea I thought of that. But it is still a clunky solution. I actually think you could do that just by using the transpose switch on Pattern Mutator itself to put it in the correct range. But that still wouldn’t lock it within a range if the pattern had a note that was outside of it (which was the problem I was trying to solve)

@@matthewstuartnz Not sure what you would like to achieve here, but if you want to change the chords/key of what you recorded with pattern mutator you can add the scales-and-chords player AFTER pattern mutator and change the chords/key in the scales-and-chords via some kind of automation. It plays then only notes of that chords/key
@ssilk
@ssilk 3 жыл бұрын
Ah, continued watching. Now I think I understand. I use the "scaler" plugin for that. But it can also not work on single notes, you need to play them together. There is also a player-device which can show you the chords (Chord Detector by Static Cling). But also doesn't know the scale. I mean, how can you get the scale, if you hear three/four/five tones? There are just too many possibilities a scale can match to a chord. And AFAIK scaler can show you matching scales to that chord. For example if I play just A min/E it shows more than two dozen scales, where this chord would match and a lot more, where just one note is wrong/missing.

To the arrange-input for pattern mutator: Yes. And no. You can put a poly-step-sequencer before the p.m. Arrange/play what you want, record in mutator and then mutate it. Gives really impressive results. The same is with a player plugin from Lectric Panda, the Kompulsion Sequencer Arpeggator, which has much more control of what you want to do and is really a good plugin. Or any other player... And yeah, sometimes I wish it would be less clunky, but a) the pattern mutator is just a pattern mutator, not more or less and I like, that reasonstudios make small tools, which are not so overwhelming like those plugins b) this clunkyness also lets you think about how to make it less clunky and that let me play with all kinds of combinations of players, there are so much depth in that concept, which cannot be showed in an hour.

One way would be to use note echo, to trigger a note at every octave. Just set the step length=0 max the repeats and pitch to +12.

So i'm confused. If you wanted to use octorex, and change the octave couldn't you just turn down the volume of the slices you don't want within octorex? So even if it did go over what you wanted, it wouldn't sound. You could even just turn down the volume of slices you don't want to trigger?

I guess you could? I wonder if that would affect loop length in a bad way? Be interesting to try!

Two things, first D Dorian is not a key. It is the second mode of C major. Say it with me. Dorian is not a key. It is a mode. Second I think your issue could be resolved by coping your rex file midi onto the sequencer( CMD Click- Copy Loop to Track) then Record the clip to pattern mutator from the sequencer. Once the clip is recorded. mute or delete the clip on the sequencer. Then turn pitch to 0. Then mutate away. I recommend not changing gate length either. This way Dr Rex will play the whole slice. For new mutations, it is best to go back to the original then mutate again. As you find mutations you like copy them to pattern(not the pattern you are on. you will end up with 8 mutations if you use all slots. More than enough for a song. Easy peasy. You probably already figured this out, but hey you got some view minutes from me. You're welcome.

@@matthewstuartnz use a custom scale. turn off chord module. if you check the block off notes it servers as a filter and it just passes the notes you select or any key you select in. using it after the pattern mutator could do the trick.

@@matthewstuartnz You want the FREE plugin VST from FL Studio called Minihost Modular. Most DAWs are behind the power curve of unlimited MIDI and audio routing within a SINGLE TRACK, such as FL Studio and Tracktion Waveform have built in. With it you can match their routing capabilities in any other DAW. With it, for example, in a single track, take MIDI in, split it to feed Scaler AND an arp like Cthulu or Kirnu Cream, and then from each go to two separate instrument VSTs and then through any chain of VST effects you want for each instrument… crazy powerful.

i absolutely cant stand this thing. its an awesome idea. i make a cool loop, a machine takes it, and spits it back at me like a jazz musician with a rearranged musical sentence or idea that makes sense or sounds good. sometimes it happens, sometimes it doesn't with this player, but it is in no way some ,kind of functional live tool. Might as well just stick with beat map. Seems like they took some kind of already existing randomizer they had on deck in their code and just stretched it into a player. im not mad, but this thing doesnt work for me.
@matthewstuartnz
@matthewstuartnz 3 жыл бұрын
Fair enough. Tbh I don't think it's really a live tool. I like to use it as a way to generating an idea as a starting point. I don't think we can expect it to be autonomous.
@earthmike532
@earthmike532 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, its deffinetly not a live tool. The entire premise of Reason, is mock up live gear or racks. Things you can manipulate, and even record the automation, of virtual live gear. I agree that this tool is cool for making small bar ideas. But come on, do you remember the trailer for this? Like most movies, the trailer was better than the film, and barely describes the film. I get that vibe from this device. Great video btw and thanks for putting these out.

Yea the trailer was definitely a highlight reel. But tbh I think that's okay. I would rather break it half the time trying to figure out cool stuff than not have it at all. Thanks for checking out the videos!
