Fun fact: English used to have a word for 10,000 and you probably all know it. It's "myriad". It fell out of use and became a synonym of "plethora". Great vid as always! I'm still new to Japanese but numbers don't seem too hard compared to some other languages. :)

Moreover isn't myriad ancient Greek?
@misterwhyte
@misterwhyte 2 ай бұрын
@@stuart5236 Yep, and you can find that very word in all the Latin languages, as well as some of the Germanic languages. In all of them the meaning changed from 10,000 to "a lot". Most likely people back in the day didn't really count past 10,000 very often, so it made sense to have a word for it as well as using it to describe a large number of something (just like we'd say "I have a million things to do"). With bigger numbers becoming more common, the initial meaning became kind of useless and only its metaphorical one remained. Only a few Asian languages kept using 10,000 as a unit, as far as I'm aware.

this is probably the best channel for learning Japanese! I'm glad it's growing faster then ever!!! I have been here since near the beginning, and just have been watching her grow and grow, her channel growing by the second! I cannot express a better "thank you" to her, other then "Arigatou gozaimasu! Gozaimasu Sayaka Sensei!!!" She has done so much to help me learn, in fact, about 89% of my knowledge of Japanese comes from her, おめでとうございまさ!

I remember when first learning Japanese finding it pretty fascinating that there would be a distinct word for "tenthousand" and that you would count from there (Making a million "100 tenthousands"), just because it highlighted something you would never think of. Where you make those divisions is completely arbitrary. Fun perspective changing moment. Still very tricky to change your way of approaching numbers though, and it's easy to zone out when someone is saying a long number. And congratulations on the subscribers!
