what was really helpful for me was describing when to use the and and when not to. I have been reading sheet music and I was not sure if I should constantly be saying 1 & 2 & 3 & 4 &, it just seemed so busy. I now know it is just 1 2 3 & 4 for quarter quarter eighth eighth quarter. Correct me if I am wrong.

Check with your Fine Arts Director to discover which counting method to use. Most in Texas use the Eastman method, however the traditional counting method.

At 2:36 is the 2 considered a downbeat? And if so, why/how is it a downbeat?

I also made a video on my channel discussing basic counting strategies you can use when playing complicated rhythms. It's very useful for beginners and can also be used during slow practicing.
