Is the 32 generally a good point to mix with another records outro?
@djshortee

It depends on the song and also what other song you plan to mix with it! Every song is different so you need to count out each songs individual song structure and then test out the mix to make sure it works correctly. Hope that helps!

It depends on the songs you're mixing! Every song's structure is unique so you'll have to test it out with the actual songs. 😊

What tips can you give me to know if the track has 16 or 32 phrase, if i mix melodic techno and i dont prepare my set i improvise track by track, should i tag each track before to know if its a 16 or 32 phrased track? You are really good ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️🫶🏻 oh and one more question very important, once i figure out if the track is 16 or 32, that will never change right? THANK YOU
@djshortee
@djshortee 8 ай бұрын
Thanks for the love! ❤️❤️ Yes, you def need prep your tunes ahead of time by counting out the entire song structure and marking your key mix points (the start of mixable sections) with cue points. You can't just tage the entire track as "16" or "32", because the phrases will vary throughout. (More on this below...) I also write out the entire song structure using a short code in my comments in my DJ software or ID3 tag info (or on the actual vinyl or CDs if I'm DJing without a laptop/USB drive.) All this preparation helps me to improvise on the fly with ease and also prepare planned sets much more quickly too. If you prefer to improvise live all the time, instead of going track for track, I would also suggest preplanning little mini sets of 2 or more songs that go well together and then notate your preferred mixpoints & mix actions for those songs. This way you don't have the stress of always improvising one song at a time which can also distract you from engaging with the crowd because you're so busy trying to figure out what to do next. Instead you can improvise mixing between mini sets (aka small groups of songs). This allows you to improvise in a way that sounds more polished and planned, but still gives you the freedom to switch things up as needed. It's the best of both worlds (planning vs improv) and it's also one of the common differences that separates the novice DJs from the pros. As for your Q about the song structure never changing throughout the track - NO, it is absolutely not guaranteed. You MOST DEF still have to count out the whole song because, even if a genre is traditionally structured around a certain number of bars in a phrase, producers can often change up the song structure throughout. The song may be produced in 16 bar phrases, but sometimes they will be grouped (or divided) in different ways (i.e. 8, 16, 32, 48, 64, 128 etc) EDM like techno is usually grouped in longer phrases as I mention in this basic overview video, but you still need to count & notate them to see how long each phrase is and where it's placed chronologically. And sometimes producers will just add a random beat, bar or group of bars just to keep you on your toes. (example: a random beat or bat right after the breakdown and before the drop kicking off the main part of a house or techno song.) It's too much to teach in a KZbin comment though,, especially without demonstrating everything in practice, so if you want to learn in more detail, I teach this method in depth throughout my online mixing courses on Groove3.com and also in my private lessons at www.PrivateDJLessons.com . Hope that helps and best of luck with your improvised melodic techno sets ! ❤️🫶

@@DJOZMET It can be any length you want but typically in popular music they are 4, 8, 16 or 32 bars. But odd bar phrases are also possible!

4 beats makes a bar in 4/4 time signature. And yes, you can have a phrase of 4 bars, in some cases, but the phrasing depends on the song! Phrases can also vary throughout the song. You need to count out the phrases of the entire song and notate the song structure in the comments of your DJ software and on the cue points (or on the actual vinyl/CDs if you aren't using digital files) during your song prep. I teach this in depth in my mixing courses on Groove3.com if you want to learn more. 😺
