I like how you just turn your hips and load the lead leg to set up the left hook. I don't use the Philly shell but regardless I still use the same preparatory motion to set up the left hook so the principal is still the same regardless of the style of defense thank you so much for your great videos Tim and keep them coming.

My son and I love watching your videos. My son used to box in the amateurs when he was a teenager and even after he stopped competing, he always kept the workouts up. My son uses the Philly Shell defense a lot when he hits the heavybag. He says you're the greatest body puncher of all time. The other night, we watched the Mercer fight, and we both had you winning by four points. Can't wait to show him this video. ❤

I really appreciate your videos very helpful and clear explanation of the philly shell defence. I got two questions: first after you block the right hand with your shoulder and your right hand how do put power in the counter right hand? It seems like I cant put much power into a straight shot but I‘m usually to far away from my opponent for a right hook. Second I rewatched some of you fights and I noticed you push forward while in the philly shell stance really interesting tactic could you maybe do a video on your overall style with pushing forward in your philly shell stance and setting up attacks from it? Thanks again I really appreciate your videos
@denisesayers85202 жыл бұрын
I agree 100%. Most people see the Philly shell as a counter puncher style or a defensive style. Tim is one of the few that adapted the Philly style to an aggressive style.
@denisesayers85202 жыл бұрын
Not an expert here and maybe Tim can chime in if I am wrong. But the way james Toney seems to get power on his counter rights are 2 ways. One the opponent is committing to his right hand landing but Toney shoulder rolls it. Now you have 160+ lbs moving straight into a counter right hand. Double the pleasure and double the pain. 2. Because James is bladed when launches a right hand he is torquing his whole upper body forward and to his left to get off of centre line. If he hits or misses his whole upper body is loaded up for a left hook. Pus the right hand has a lot of body weight behind for power and as I said before his head and body are off the center line keeping him safe from counters.
@ricardo.de1232 жыл бұрын
@@denisesayers8520 I worked on it in sparring today and it worked for me really good as a quick counter just to interrupt my opponents attack and stun him just enough to land my left hook since I am in perfect position for it after the right hand.

The skill sets that you teach in the videos needs to be recognized around the boxing world , because fighters like yourself, Archie Moore, George Benton, Ezzard Charles, Henry Hank, Ray Robinson, Ray Leonard Pernell Whitaker, Marlon Starling, Mike McCallum, James Toney and all of the Mayweathers' had long careers and were the hardest fighters to beat!!!! 👍🙏😊

Tim when you throw your right hand from the shell is it fine to keep your left hand on your body or should you bring it up to protect the left side of your head?
@timwitherspoon13782 жыл бұрын
Yes your right hand should protect both of them when you throw your right hand you bring it back for defense also remind me so we can do a video about it when you throw your right hand make sure when you come back your shoulder and your right hand are best friends they will protect you tighten them both up when the punch come you can catch the punch and your shoulder and your right hand after you throw the right hand
@timwitherspoon13782 жыл бұрын
Leave your left hand around your waist when you twist your body you should be able to throw the left hook easily from your hip it's how you turn your body that's a knockout punch if you do it right

The shell is something you wait to teach a boxer teach him all the basic stuff first keep your feet in the right place bend your knees defense tight then you go into the shell after a while let amateurs be amateurs when they really get into a lot of fights you can teach them then
