Speaking as someone who hasn't done shrink covering before (at least not since 40+ years ago), this video was the perfect amount of detail. Nicely done!

4:43 little tip: don’t iron towards any point that’s already been ironed. Even if you think you are pulling it tight, you are running the risk of stretching the material and then getting a little crease as the iron reaches the previously ironed material. Always iron *away* from previous adhesion points.

There something about building a kit, covering it to perfection and then the compliments from club members that make it so rewarding 😊

@@NickChittyFlying I feel it’s a lost art. And with all the kits that used to be available back when I started in the late 80’s, it’s sad to see it dwindling. Hopefully it’ll make a comeback. It’ll make better builders, and repairers of models.

A really great demonstration of how to film cover. What's the main advantage of film over tissue, thats all I've ever used, however nearly all of my 'planes were built in the 1950s before it was invented. I was surprised how many wrinkles there were that disappeared after shrinking.

Nice looking wing Nick. Looks sharp! I did a Lightning Bug DLG with clear laminating film over fluorescent green painted wing wood. Looked good. I plan to do a Micro Gentle Lady in the near future and I think it's going to have to be painted black, like this wing, white or natural body.

Nick ive got an old free flight glider I was looking to restore the tissue is very brittle and i was taking it all off. I was going to use tissue again but this seems a much better option

Hi Nick, Thanks for all of your vdeos which are a great help. I'm wondering if you know if it's possible to paint Feather Cover without it peeling off please? Cheers, Ian
@NickChittyFlying Жыл бұрын
You can mate but it needs a couple fine sprays first. All so you stick it in a hedge it will scratch off You can also spray inside film. I personally found it a bit off a faff 👌

Hello Nick. Can you not just iron the edges down and shrink the inner portion with a heat gun?
@NickChittyFlying2 жыл бұрын
Yes mate that works but I am shit scared of burning a hole in it 😂
@StrangerInAStrange Жыл бұрын
I'm thinking that you also gain some strength by adhering the covering to each rib, which is happening as the iron goes over each bay.

So, it's laminating film then?

Great tutorial nick, iam about to build my first ever balsa glider it's the aeromaut thermic, I have never dealt with covering films before so looking for some wisdom if you could please, what kind of film would you recommend, more than weight I want strength as I don't want it puncturing every two minutes, cost is obviously an issue as the oratex stuff is quiet expensive, you have built and flown many film covered planes so if you can give me some guidance would be much appreciated, thank you
