I've read that in the early 2000's there were some Swedish or Norwegian folks that were teaching US singers how to pronounce english words "the fancy way". This is where all of this weird things emerged from. They are also known for the song "Sitting Down Here" by Lene Marlin, where even professional vocal trainers had troubles distinguish all the words she's singing (but it's a killer song tho).
