How-To Craft using Direct to Film (DTF) with an Inkjet Printer

Awesome demonstration 👍! Allow me to provide a few tips to save time. Instead of heat gun, use a heatpress or Cricut Easypress. For the heatpress, just lay the print down and have the heat plate over the image about an inch away for 3 minutes and rotate the print halfway during the curing time(don’t allow the heat plate to touch the print, just keep it over the image about an inch away). Heatpress setting should be 315 and time is about 3 minutes. Cricut Easypress 400 and time is about 3 minutes (About an inch away from print). Using the heatpress or Cricut will set the DTF powder with even heat. The heat gun does not. The heat gun may work a few times but you won’t get the same effect vs the heatpress. No need to redo the powder. Only time you would apply the powder again if you missed any part of image(No need to redo powder and heat it again). You only need to reapply the powder during the first time if the powder missed any of the images. These tips will speed up the processing time and print will still come out just as good. Note: Make sure to do a “COLD” peel. Yes, 100% cold peel. After pressing the shirt place it off the press to cool countertop and let it set for about 10 to 15 minutes for best results. There are times using ink jet or Sublimation ink if peeled too soon the images will lift. You are guaranteed with 100% cold peel no issues.

This is amazing! I've spent the last several days watching people convert expensive inkjets into DTF specific printers, but knowing there's a method to just use a standard inket is so cool. I imagine this works best on light colors since inkjets don't have the white ink base - I'm definitely going to play with this. Also, just wanted to get this out for safety - raw DTF powder should only be handled by adults and with proper safety equipment (masks, gloves and goggles). It is polyurethane based and can be toxic if inhaled or ingested - small particles can go airborne while pouring and spreading. It also releases fumes when heated (during both the curing process and application) so it's recommended to only do this process in a well ventilated area! Happy crafting.

Both the inkjet and sub inks to do DTF are hacks. I would still change that printer to sub without putting that inkjet ink in it. You can do a lot more with a sub printer than you can inkjet.

@@1105kevin once you put that inkjet ink in your printer. The printer inking system has to be drained of all that ink to change it over to sublimation. Lots of people have ruined their printers that way. Just a tip! 😉

It should because there is white pigment ink with inkjet printing. This process is not done with sublimation ink

Ty Brenda! Now, that I have become more experienced I only coat once for each application. I don't have a preference for one over the other. That was just to show people that you can do both. I bought an Epson 8550 yesterday, so I will be converting it to DTF and do the real DTF process going forward with the white ink, which will allow me to do it on dark colors.
