I love watching cold starts of those older motors. It renews my appreciation of modern technology. Virtually all of this procedure remains relevant today. But the automation of it all via electronic ignition, fuel injection, ECM/PCM, etc... does a really great job of hiding the complexity. The hardest part for the driver is the walk across the snow to enter the car.

The Engineer Kettering (for whom Sloan-Kettering Medical Center is partially named) invented the Electric Starter. I believe Cadillac had the first mass-produced one...back in 1912.

Important safety tip: Always crank UP. It would seem like you could get more leverage cranking down, but if you do that, the crank can whip around when the engine engages and injure your arm. If you crank UP, your arm is out of the way.

Couldn’t really see it from the vantage point wether or not he was doing it, but another safety tip is to never grip the start handle when cranking, always cup your hand in case the engine backfires

Use left hand to pull up and don't hold crank with your thumb. Keep thumb out of the way.

Very cool! But you have to be a genius to remember all that stuff, just to be able to go to the store! Impressive strength, too. Don't know if I would be able to crank it. I guess that's why women kept men around back then!!! Thanks for sharing!!!
