I do all of these things, except the journalling. Recently, I've added a small gesture that I like very much. As soon as my feet hit the floor, I pause for a moment and acknowledge that I'm about to start a new day. I see that the whole day at this point is still ahead of me. At the end it will have been spent. It will be over. But here I am, right at the starting line. Usually this gives rise to a sense of gratitude, or feeling committed to make the most of the day. The whole thing takes five seconds, but it sets the tone for everything that follows.

To date, this is the BEST description of "meditation": to be aware of your thoughts and get used to not reacting so itbecomes easier in the rest of your day. Previously the idea of meditation would anger me because people say "clear your mind" etc, which for me is 100% impossible. Thank you Tim for this description!
@thewayofthejumprope6 жыл бұрын
I totally understand the motivation for making one's bed upon arising. However, I've read that, if you make your bed immediately after waking up, you can trap moisture in which is a good environment for dust mites. So, I open my window and expose the unmade bed sheets to air and sunlight which is apparently like kryptonite for the mites. Then before leaving the house, I make my bed.
@m3lisha6 жыл бұрын
Ditto! I roll back the sheets get it cooked in the sun and make it before i leave

Start by putting your phone in airplane mode before you go to bed. You want to have a boot up system of your own rather than waking up to notifications. If you win the morning you win the day. 1. Waking up and making your bed. You accomplish one thing in the beginning of the day. Sets you up physiologically to have a productive day. 2. 10 -15 push ups to prime your nervous system. 3. Journaling (5 minute journal or morning pages) 4. Meditation 10-20 min (Headspace) BONUS: I would also include SMILING first thing when you wake up. Start the day in a positive way! :)

BTW- "Morning Pages" is from a great book, "The Artist's Way," by Julia Cameron. It contains lots of other great exercises to help you on your path of being an artist.

I also recommend people get a light alarm clock. I set mine to gradually get brighter over the course of an hour between 5:30am and 6:30am. It's much nicer (and more natural) to gradually wake up to light than to suddenly be jolted awake by a horrible sound. So, the latest I want to get out of bed is 6:30am, but I typically end up getting up somewhere between 6:00am and 6:15am. I then shave, meditate, exercise, then write in my journal whilst drinking my morning smoothie.

"If you win the morning, then you win the day". Simple words but enough to motivate me to make the best out of my morning! Other advices : 1. Make your bed (the outcome is to make you feel like you had accomplished something) 2. 10-15 push ups (or basically a little exercise that can pump you up for the day) 3. Journalling 4. 10-20 minutes meditation (try to look it as if you are practicing to organize your immense amount of thoughts) Things to remember : Turning your phone to airplane mode before bed is clearly important so that you don't wake up to notifications. It's truly important to not be detracted at the beginning of the day if you want to win the day!

Making my bed drives me crazy, so I very neatly and symmetrically fold my PJs (usually shorts and a tank) and place them on a chair or on my pillow. Gives me a bit of an artisan win in the morning and it's always nice to see your comfy clothes waiting for you when you get home.

I do a lot of this already! I learned from a book by another author about making your bed first and he also suggested doing a few minutes of Radio Taiso. I also meditate for about 5 minutes a day and it all these things do wonders. Only thing I don't do(that I used to do) is journal and only because I feel like it takes too much time. I was doing it for probably 30 minutes to an hour a day so maybe I just need to add it back in but in shorter time frames.

I follow something more simple: 1) Wake up 2) brush teeth 3) grab a glass of water 4) Journal while hydrating 5) Cook/eat breakfast 6) get dressed 7) head to work (pick up a coffee on the way) The key is to follow a standard protocol each morning that gets your mind in the zone quickly and with minimal effort.

Sweet. Great tips Tim! My morning routine: wake up with the sun at 5:30ish in the summer. I've never used an alarm clock ever. Does sex count as exercise I don't know but if not, chug some water, stretch, bathroom dance, make bed, and release the windows from their coverings and check out the sky. These are all great suggestions - but the real world is constantly banging at the door when I wake up. I'm receiving phone calls potentially at 5:30am. This typically dictates my day until the initial fire fighting of the day ends. I'm confident most people are in similar situations. I do make my bed, which does help prepare me mentally to attack the day.

I agree with the premise of the journaling tactic. For me it takes the form of notetaking and list-making. It is remarkable how effective analog list-making has been for me the night before I wake. I go to bed directed, lighter, anticipatory, and clear, rather than loaded and weighted by the gravity of randomness or the dread that can creep in. The list then helps compel me to achieve a set of plans in sequence and manage my energy and priorities in order. This would not be significant if I did not see what the doing nothing can evidence. In my most productive days I have been able to break down my first six hours into 15 minute activity intervals. I know that sounds obsessive, but it can be actually liberating, as we are programmable beings that do not naturally express efficiencies without solution sets or habituation. After that first six hours, improvisation itself seems more purposeful and rewarding--perhaps because I have primed myself and have already experienced mental acquity in execution of the early successes of the day, as you so aptly stated in the video. Thank you for the information and validation!

Idea: video on taboo subject of male (this of course wouldn't exclude female) anti aging practices, especially in relation to the face and cosmetics. E.G.- Vitamin C serum, retinol, topical formulas, the variety of slightly more invasive techniques done by a dermatologist, the cost of those, etc... I think some of us practice these (and consider them. I'm 40 yo) but it's never talked about in podcasts of the "biohacking, optimizing, etc" community.

Make your bed first thing in the morning. It's something I heard / read a lot. But this is, in fact, not such a good idea. I quote an article from the HuffPost: "If you immediately make your bed with the sunrise, the tight sheets will trap millions of dust mites that live on your bed, feeding off your dead skin cells and sweat and potentially contributing to asthma and allergy problems. An unmade and open bed, however, exposes the creatures to fresh air and light and will help dehydrate and kill them off." I'm not an expert, but I think the best is to open your windows first thing in the morning, follow the routine recommend by Tim, then make your bed last.
@deadtothewxrld6 жыл бұрын
calXium Ralph Reiss I would not take Huffpost seriously without searching for info from an actual scientist. For example, I found an article in which a former OSU etymology professor was interviewed concerning this. According to him: mites live in the mattress. He didn’t say they don’t live in sheets, but he never mentioned sheets, just mattresses. It would follow that a mattress that’s covered by a topper anyway would not be significantly affected by making your bed on top of it. Also according to the professor, the mites are harmless aside from causing mild allergic reactions. Finally, he listed several things that can keep them at bay, while not affecting your ability to make your bed: vacuum your mattress, flip it every couple months if it’s two-sided, etc- and I assume a given was to wash your sheets on a regular basis.
@RalphReiss6 жыл бұрын
It's an interesting point. I also read that the microbial fauna in the bed in the morning, due to the body heat during the night, is like a tropical forest. The germs & the microbes reproduce faster in a warm environment. The fact that we usually make our bed immediatly in the morning will keep the heat longer and the fauna will keep growing (until eventually it decreases again). In one case or the other, make your bed in the morning (it's not that important you do it right after you wake up, or right before work) & wash your sheets at least every two weeks ;)
