I don't be to be _that_ smartass guy, but a romanization is the adaptation of a script to the Latin alphabet (e.g. Romaji for Japanese), a more general term is transliteration, to mean any script. The written rendering of the sounds of a language is indeed an orthography, as you rightly said. Thanks for doing this series, quite informative and a great introduction to those new to conlangs. Also a fan of the heavy breath at the end

I had to learn IPA for a linguistics course I took. That’s how I learned most of them. I wish I could have taken more classes on linguistics.

A great head start! I wish I could have too, however much of my schooling is devoted to engineering. Self-teaching is fun, however, and with the right resources, things can be made easy, that's why I'm here to help!

Tip: You shouldn’t have a ch digraph when there is no sound for c by it’s own in your conlang, but you may do that if you wish I am just pointing out that characters should make sense in their representation

The abugida used for Hindi, Sanskrit, and a few other indo-aryan languages is devanagari. The abjad used for Arabic and a handful of Balkan and north African languages is Arabic. If you want a "futuristic" writing system, featural is a foregone conclusion.

FYI abjad isn't used in Balkan languages since 20th century. I don't want to be rude, I just want to inform

@@Dracheneks You need to know a little about sign language phonology to properly get it, but it is a truly fascinating system. I really should try to research and write a conlanger's guide to sign languages. Most conlangers know very little about how sign languages work and the fascinating ways in which they differ from spoken languages.

@@Dracheneks I did two years of a four-year Deaf Studies course, hoping to become an interpreter. Dropped out because of stress. But I still have my notes and a fascination with linguistics. I just need to talk myself into doing the work.

That's really interesting! And does seem very taxing. There are so many different types of language, even some that people don't realise are so different, like sign language.

a good way of starting to make a script for me is to try to make it work in English, its not hard to make english an abjad. a writing system i made is like that, one feature i think was interesting is that there is a symbol for no continent, where an ending vowel would be

Why did you use Y for /j/? It makes more sense to use J. Wished conlangers weren't so afraid of using J for /j/.
@Dracheneks
@Dracheneks 4 жыл бұрын
I'm not scared of using J at all. I used y, since most of my audience are English speaking, and is mainly aimed for English speakers to learn. I can choose whichever letter I want to use. I could have chosen Z, it is not a decision that will affect or harm anybody, just a personal choice.

"Fusion" isn't actually an English word, it comes from Latin (see "fusão" in Portuguese and "fusión" in Spanish).

I just want to point out that you pronounced voiceless palatal fricative as voiceless post-alveolar fricative. Maybe you aren't good with that sound. You should change it to velar or post-alveolar or even alveolo-palatal fricative. Just saying, not trying to be mean. Video is very good BTW

Yeah, I noticed afterwards. I was tired when recording the voiceover for this video so that's just came out my mouth xD I can pronounce both, believe me, I do when I speak German. It was just an off-day. It's fine, I understand. Thank you very much, I'm glad you enjoyed it!

stress... I prefer pitch accent... AKA Swedish, Japanese or say Chinese, Norwegian and Danish. Let's see Swedish doesn't have stress, well it does have stress, kind of, pitch is after all a form of stress, however Swedish is a pitch accent, like chinese, although I do think tonal language is a bit better of a term, as it's tone based. Although Swedish isn't as awful as Chinese when it comes to tone, after all Swedish only has 2 tones at most. Minimum 1, which is known as type 0 Swedish pitch, it's weird and an outlier and it's how Finnish people speak Swedish. I myself speak with a pretty archaic 2 tone pitch, in fact the oldest known pitch accent that's in a European language, although there are only the Scandinavian languages that are pitch accent languages in Europe. Then we have the Danes, which have stød, which is unique to Danish, it's a weird thing that evolved from pitch accent... it's weird even from my perspective and no matter how much I try to understand it, I can't. Even though I speak Danish. I did after all say I speak the most archaic pitch accent in Swedish... it just so happens to be the most archaic form of Danish as well. Nothing to think about there. However pitch accent is way harder to design into a language than simple stress.

This tutorial is meant to be for absolute beginners of conlanging, therefore explaining everything is the best course of action so that people aren't confused in case it wasn't taught. Not everyone's education is the same.
