The pixel is like the switch of your marketing. When it is "fired" or switched "on" by someone landing on the website where your pixel is located it reports back to Facebook and it triggers an action - it could be a tag saying this person purchased, so don't send them more ads, it could tell Facebook to go find more people just like this person, or it could say send them a follow-up ad.
