I do my numbering based on my pedigree chart. I am #1, Dad #2, Mom #3, etc. Any child outside of direct ancestor is numbered in order of their birth. I am not going to put family group sheets in page protectors. That adds to much bulk for me. I do copies of family photos and store the originals. Everything is also backed up digitally. I think as long as you leave a simple enough system for future generations you'll be ok. But you're right about consistency. I started back in the day at the library and archives and doing everything in paper. I've been doing digital for a long time, even though I do have binders. Now I am trying to organize almost 40 years of research into nice presentable binders. I enjoyed your video. Very helpful! Everyone can always use new ideas no matter how long they have been wading through the papers and photos. ALSO, I wanted to add in case people don't know, a military stone for a documented veteran can be put up for free through the government. Just FYI

@@statesboro-bullochcountyli8445 I have a GGGGF that died in Ware Co. Ga. Thomas Newbern death 1837 (aged 66), CAN'T find his grave on Findagrave and NOT in any cemetery survey books I've found, do you or do you know of anyone that has experience in running property records in Ware Co. or Pierce Co, Ga?? I have some info that he and his son owned land in Militia District etc, but I don't know HOW to connect this info TO actual land property records, IF I could find the property they owned during thet time they may be buried ON the property. ANY help appreciated

Interesting information. I'm researching my direct lines and any and all possible collateral lines in Italian records starting in 1823 (first year for the records available online). I've tried a number of different organization methods for my notes. I think I finally hit upon one that will work. The main problems are the same given names being used over and over. And even going by just the names of married couples is not foolproof. There can be more than one couple within the town who have EXACTLY the same first and last names. So I decided to use letter and number systems. I designate birth/baptism records as B1, B2, B3, etc. Marriage records as M1, M2, M3, etc. And death records as D1, D2, D3, etc. And then I use a number system for couples in reference to their order of appearance in the records. And use their fathers' names and/or places of origin (if different than the town in question) to more specifically identify them. "FALLETTI 1" is the designation for Michele Falletti, the son of Michele Falletti (deceased) married to Domenica Berta, the daughter of Michele Berta (deceased). I use Italian 'shorthand' in my description: "Michele Falletti fu Michele & Domenica Berta fu Michele". Records (between 1823 to 1826) associated with this couple are one: 1823: B3. The birth of their son, Firmino Paolo Falletti. FALLETTI 2 is the designation for (Italian shorthand): "Michele Falletti fu Giovanni Battista & Catterina Vallero di Bernardo/fu Bernardo". Catterina's father, Bernardo Vallero, died during the time frame of the records in question (1823 to 1826). Records (between 1823 to 1826) associated with this couple (FALLETTI 2) are 1823: B3 (Catterina was godmother to the baby born to FALLETTI 1); 1824: B16 (birth of Giovanni Battista Falletti, son of FALLETTI 2) and 1826: B33 (birth of Bernardo Antonio Falletti, another son of FALLETTI 2). The aforementioned Bernardo Vallero was my fourth great-grandfather. Hopefully this system will make it easier for me to keep the families separate in my notes. My previous attempts at a system: First keeping all persons (male and female alphabetically by given names) in lists based on their fathers' given names...and second: Listing them alphabetically by the husband's given names and kept separately by the wives' names -- proved unsatisfactory. There was no way to determine if the individuals were children of the same father. And there were occasions when there was more than one married couple with EXACTLY the same first and last names AND that it is not uncommon to find someone listed by a different given name in different records. "Giovanni Battista Falletti" (for example) might be listed in his birth record as "Giovanni Battista Firmino Falletti." As a witness to his brother's marriage he might be listed as "Giovanni Falletti." His death record might have him listed as "Battista Falletti."

Thanks for your help. Why do you not put original photos and documents in binders, I thought that was the reason for doing genealogy?
@statesboro-bullochcountyli8445 Жыл бұрын
You always want to make digital copies of your originals, and it is recommended to use the copies in the binders instead of the originals. The originals should be stored separately to preserve them for as long as possible. If the binder is lost or damaged, and it has your originals, then everything is lost. This is one of the main reasons for only keeping copies in the binder.

I was watching your video when some names popped out at me and we have some ancestors in common. Your Jospeh and Sarah Anderson. Was he born in New Bern, NC Mary Anderson Mikell and William would be my great aunt and uncle.
@statesboro-bullochcountyli84458 ай бұрын
That is quite possible. Joseph & Sarah Anderson's oldest son, John F. Anderson, had many children. I have met dozens of descendants who come through John. There seem to be fewer who descend from the other children.

Where do you get the group sheets? Did you make them yourself?
@statesboro-bullochcountyli8445 Жыл бұрын
Most basic genealogy forms can be found on AncestryLibrary and downloaded. Check to see if your local library has AncestryLibrary, this is a link to the forms: www.ancestry.com/cs/charts-and-forms You can also search for a a family group sheet here: www.archives.gov/files/research/genealogy/charts-forms/family-group-sheet.pdf

When you say, "put it in a bag", what do you mean by bag? Obviously, it's different from a plastic sleeve or a memory box but what is it?
@statesboro-bullochcountyli8445 Жыл бұрын
This was in reference to archival bags or sleeves. Examples can be seen here: www.universityproducts.com/photo-products/print-storage-enclosures
